CUMPTON, Marvin M. (2008 - 2008)

Marvin M. Cumpton, 98, passed away June 21, 2009 at Medicalodge in Butler, Mo. Marvin was born December 3, 1910 to William and Rosa Cumpton in Spruce, Mo. He married Pauline C. Hess on December 24, 1935 in Butler. They had two children, James M. Cumpton and David E. Cumpton. Marvin spent his life in the oil business. He initially worked for Skelly Service Station in Butler, and later became proprietor of the station. In 1954 Marvin was promoted to District Salesman for Skelly and was transferred to Springfield, Mo., in 1956 as the District Sales Manager. He and Pauline also operated the Inn Hotel in Butler through the mid 1950's. In 1960, he transferred to Kansas City, Mo., into Real Estate Procurement for Skelly and remained in this department until his retirement at age 65. Marvin resided in Prairie Village and Overland Park, Kan., from 1960 to 2005 when he moved back to Butler. Some of his hobbies after retirement included golf and bowling, which he continued to participate in into his 90's. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife Pauline on Dec. 19, 1981, brothers John, Everett, George, sister Wilma, and daughter-in-law Sherry Cumpton. He is survived by son James Cumpton and wife Micki, son David Cumpton, brothers Arthur and Quentin, sister Gladys Linard, four granddaughters, and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 11-12:30 Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Mullinax Funeral Home of Butler, on the west side of the square, (660-679-0009). A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery of Butler. The family suggests memorial contributions in Marvin's name to the Bates County Historical Society, in care of the funeral home.
