Violet P. Campbell, 86, of Nevada passed away on Aug. 15, 2006, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada after several months of failing health. She was born on Oct. 28, 1919, at Liberal, Mo., to Timothy Keller Adams and Flora Ziegler Adams. Violet grew up in the rural Liberal and Bronaugh areas with her five brothers and two sisters and graduated from Bronaugh High School in 1937. On Nov. 28, 1940, she married Melvin G. Campbell at Bronaugh, Mo. They lived on farms in the Bronaugh area until moving to Nevada in 1948, with their two small children. Melvin died on Dec. 19, 1970. She was a stay-at-home mother until going to work in 1957 as a receptionist at the Nevada Hospital and then in March 1958 at the U.S. Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service office in Nevada where she was employed for 21-1/2 years, retiring in November 1979. Violet was baptized at the Bronaugh Methodist Church when she was a child. For many years she has been a member of the The United Methodist Church in Nevada. From her maternal side she was of American Indian heritage and was a tribal member of the Citizen Pottawatomie Nation of Shawnee, Okla. After her retirement she volunteered in community activities including working at the Red Cross Bloodmobile and delivering Meals on Wheels. She also was very active in United Methodist Women functions. Violet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Paul Ziegler Adams, Gilbert Orval Adams, and Clarence Kermit Adams; and two sisters, Mary Eloise Adams and Alice Veva Twigg. She is survived by her daughter, Rama Faye Hart, and husband, Jim; her son, M. Keith Campbell, and wife, Karen; granddaughter, Michelle D. Swait; grandson, Dustin K. Campbell, and wife, Amber; great-granddaughters, Brooke and Ashlyn Swait; great-grandsons, Cayden and Morgan Campbell; a brother, Lewis Bourassa Adams, all of Nevada; a brother, David Frank Adams, of Liberal, Mo.; a step-great-grandson, Jeremy Swait, of Bartlesville, Okla.; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada.

Carlisle Cantrell died at the home of his sister, Mrs. William Burton in Altona, Mo., Monday, August 7th 1922 of typhoid fever; aged 20 years, 9 months and 14 days. Carlisle, youngest son of John G. Cantrell, was born in Shawnee township, October 24, 1901, and spent his life on the farm where he was born. He was a affable young man, who enjoyed the friendship of his acquaintances. Carlisle had been ill for some time but his condition was not considered as serious as it proved to be and his death came as a surprise to his family and many friends. He is survived by his father, two brothers, G.E. Cantrell, of Kansas City, and Clint Cantrell at home and four sisters, Mrs. J.D. Hilton of Shreveport, La., Mrs. W. I. Gloyd, of near Ballard, Mrs. B. M. McCulloh of near Garden City, and Mrs. Wm. Burton of Altona. The near relatives have the sympathy of friends in this bereavement. Funeral services for Carlisle were held from the Altona Baptist church Wednesday afternoon. The burial service of the Modern Woodmen Lodge was given at the grave. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

CANTRELL, Catherine Jane Owen

Catherine Jane Owen was born near Altona, Mo., October 3, 1861. She was united in marriage with J. G. Cantrell, March 5, 1879. To this union nine children were born, seven of whom survive, they are: Lillie E. Hilton, of Shreve Port, La, G.E. Cantrell, of Kansas City, Beulah McCulloh, of near Garden City, Ola Gloyd, Nettie E. Burton, Clinton Cantrell and Carlyle Cantrell of near Altona. Besides these she is survived by her husband and her mother, Mrs. D. C. Cloud. Mrs. Cantrell united with the Altona Baptist Church in the fall of 1894 and remained a steadfast Christian until her death, which came January 30, 1920. Mrs. Cantrell was an excellent Christian lady and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends. She was a loving daughter, a devoted wife and mother and a kind and accommodating neighbor, and will be sadly missed not only by the family, but by the entire community, where she spent all the years of her life. All of her living children were present at the funeral. The Journal joins in sympathy for the bereaved family.

CANTRELL, Clinton Lee

Clinton Lee Cantrell, better known as Clint, son of John G. and Catherine Jane (Owen) Cantrell, was born near Altona, Bates County, February 7, 1898. Mr. Cantrell was a farmer, living in the Altona neighborhood until he retired and moved to Adrian. He entered the Bates County Memorial Hospital December 22, 1978 and was there at the time of his death on February 12, 1979. Mr. Cantrell was a World War II Veteran, a member of the Altona Baptist Church and a life member of the Crescent Hill Masonic Lodge No. 368 AF & AM, Adrian Missouri. He received his 50 year pin from the Masonic Lodge in February 1970 and became a master mason in 1919. Clint had a keen memory in regard to local history, always eager to explain and talk to relatives and friends in regard to early happenings. He went to Lone Jack annually to take part in services commemorating the Civil War Battle in which his Grandfather, John Owen, was critically injured and died a few days later, being buried in the Lone Jack Cemetery. He is survived by three nieces and two nephews; Mrs. Jane Rook, Harrisonville; Mrs. Roberta Kauffman, Lee's Summit; Mrs. Ruth Wells, Kansas City; Robert McCulloh, Garden City; and Russell Burton, San Bernardino, California, also eight great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held February 15 at the Atkinson Dickey Funeral Home in Adrian. Interment was made in the Altona Cemetery.

Died, at her home near Altona, April 6th,of consumption, Cora M. wife of R. L. Cantrell. Deceased was born in Miami Co., Kansas, Sept. 27th 1867, she was the daughter of L. and Elizabeth Ackerly. She was married Dec. 20th 1888. Professed faith in Christ in the fall of 1894, and united with the M.E. church south. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her best. Funeral services were held on Monday.

CANTRELL, Elmer S.

Again the dark shadow of death has fallen on the family of Mr. R. L. Cantrell of Altona, Missouri. Only a few weeks ago Mr. Cantrell saw his dear wife, a most estimable Christian woman, laid in her grave, and now his only child, Elmer S. so soon follows, he died at the home of his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ackerly of Miami county, Kansas, on the 8th day of June 1895, aged 1 year 1 month and 13 days. Little Elmer was not well when his mother died and was after her burial taken to the home of his grandparents where willing hands and loving hearts did all that could be done for the little sufferer until death took him to be with his mother in the better land. The little body was brought back to Altona where funeral services were conducted, after which it was placed in the Owen's grave yard beside that of his mother. The entire community deeply sympathize with the father in his sad bereavement.

John G. Cantrell, son of Stephen and Lillie Cantrell, was born in Lumpkin county, Ga., October 15, 1850. At the age of 16 he moved with his family to Platt county, Mo. where he resided for 1 year, moving from there to Altona, Bates county, Mo., where he has resided continuously. He was married to Catherine Jane Owen, March 5, 1879, who preceded him in death January 20th, 1920. To this union nine children were born, six of whom are still living; Mrs. J.D. Hilton of Shreveport, La.; G. E. Cantrell, of Kansas City; Mrs. W. I. Gloyd, Mrs. B. McCulloh, Mrs. Wm. Burton and Clint Cantrell of the home address. He is also survived by one brother, Sterlin B. Cantrell of Olney Springs Colorado; and one sister, Mrs. E. A. Porter, of Great Falls, Mont. He united with the Baptist church at Altona, in the year of 1896 and died in that faith March 23, 1927, at the age of 76 years, 5 months and 8 days. The deceased had been affiliated with the Masonic Lodge since the year 1877. Brother Cantrell was a neighbor indeed, fair and truthful. His life was greatly influenced by the pure principles of the Masonic order and his Christian faith. He was an unassuming but bright Mason; being 36 years ago Master of the Altona Lodge, "I never knew him to do an un-Masonic deed" said one, "He was my neighbor for more than 50 years and never proved untrue." said another. He reared a large family and was indeed a true father and faithful husband.

ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING - Owen Cantrell Killed by Accidental Discharge of Gun. This community was thrown into a fever of excitement Wednesday evening when it was announced that Owen Cantrell had accidentally shot and killed himself. He was hunting ducks on the William Arrick farm, six miles southeast of Adrian, coming to a wire fence he crawled through the fence and in pulling the gun through after him the hammer caught on a wire and the gun was discharged. The contents lodged in the boys breast and killed him almost instantly. This is all we have of one of the most distressing accidents that has occurred in this community in a number of years. Owen Cantrell was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Cantrell, of Shawnee township. He was fifteen years old at the time of his untimely death. Owen was a manly boy, possessing all of the elements of a gentleman. The funeral services over the remains will be held today, Friday, at Altona. The parents, brothers and sisters have the deep sympathy of all in this great calamity. Obituary will be published next week.

Roland Lee Cantrell died at his home near Altona, Monday, August 28, 1922; aged 65 years, 1 month and 2 days. Mr. Cantrell was born in Dawson county, Georgia, July 26, 1857. He came with his parents to Missouri in 1897 locating in Clay county. In 1868 they moved to Bates county, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage with Miss Cora Ackerly, December 20, 1888, at Osawatomie, Kansas. To this union two children were born, Ona Lee and Elmer S., both died in infancy. Mrs. Cantrell died April 6th, 1895. Mr. Cantrell was converted and united with the Altona Baptist Church in 1895 and remained a faithful member of the same until his death. For a number of years Mr. Cantrell had been a helpless and hopeless invalid, and his death did not come as a surprise to his friends. Mr. Cantrell was a good citizen, a good neighbor and a loyal friend. He is survived by two brothers, John G. Cantrell, of Altona, Mo., and S. B. Cantrell, of Olney Springs, Colorado, and one sister Mrs. E. A. Porter, of Gilman, Montana. Funeral services for Mr. Cantrell were held from the Altona Baptist church, Wednesday afternoon, August 30th. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

CANTRELL, Stephen

Crossed the Great Divide - The sickle of death has laid low one among our most highly respected citizens and pioneer settlers of Bates County. Uncle Stephen Cantrell died at the home of his son Roland Lee, near Altona, on Saturday, November 13th, 4:30 a.m., he laid aside his earthly garments for when awakened from their slumbers, yet none the less painful. The cause of his death was general debility. For some years past he had been in failing health and a week or more prior to his death was worse than he had been, but had got better and all thought he was getting stronger again. He was a man of great vitality, retired as usual and about ten minutes before he died walked across the room, opened the door then closed it, walked back to his bed and in the act of laying down fell over and passed away without a struggle. Deceased was 89 years, 2 months, 23 days; was born in South Carolina, August 20, 1820. In early childhood moved with his parents to Dawson county, Georgia, (at that time the Cherokee Nation) where he grew to manhood, was there when the Indians were taken to the Territory which they now occupy. In April 1843 he was married to Miss Lillie A. T. McClure, a native of that state, and to this union nine children were born. His wife and four children, two sons and two daughters, have crossed the dark river of death and are waiting on the the white robe of immortality. His pilgrimage here has been one of sobriety, morality and justice. The sad message, father is dead, over the wires to his children was not a great shock other shore to welcome him home. His living children are J.G. and R. L. Cantrell, near Altona, S.B. Cantrell of Dayton, Mo., Mrs. E.A. Porter, of Adrian, and S. S. Cantrell, of Clinton. Deceased had a large number of grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, a sister and three brothers also survive him. Uncle Stephen was a kind father, a good neighbor and a true friend. Whoever passed through the doors of his home, be it either friend or stranger, found a hearty welcome. To his children we express the tenderest sympathy in this hour, the dark clouds of bereavement bears the bright lining of a future reunion where there shall be no more parting. Mr. Cantrell was opposed to floral tribute in the nature of show, so only a pillow of white carnations and maiden hair fern rested on the casket. The funeral service was conducted at Altona on Sunday, November 14 by Rev. Smith of the Baptist church the deceased was a member. The choir rendered some beautiful songs, Happy Day being his favorite hymn. After an excellent discourse by Rev. Smith in the presence of a large gathering of relatives, friends and neighbors, without ostentation and in sincere respect for the dead and sympathy for the living, he was buried in the afternoon in the Owen cemetery by the side of his wife and loved ones to await the resurrection morn.

Eva Maxine Capelle, 75, of Fort Scott, Kan., passed away at her home early Tuesday morning, Aug. 8, 2006. She was born Aug. 15, 1930, in Nevada, Mo., the daughter of Warner Otis and Augusta Jane Van Loon McDowell. She graduated from Nevada High School, and moved to Fort Scott in 1949. She married Oscar Victor Capelle, Aug. 20, 1951, in Bentonville, Ark. He preceded her in death Oct. 9, 1996. Eva is survived by her children, Mrs. Dale (Vickie) Lanham of Yates Center, Kan., Mrs. Mike (Debbie) Judy of Redfield, Kan., a sister; and Mrs. R.W. (Doris) Cullor of Fort Scott; a sister-in-law, Mona McDowell of Nevada; and three grandchildren. In addition to her husband Oscar, she was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, G. O. McDowell, Bill McDowell, and Charles H. McDowel; and two sisters, Kathryn Hays and Ruby McConnoughey. Graveside services Thursday, Aug. 10, at the National Cemetery.

SAMUEL W. CAREY DEAD - Samuel W. Carey was born in Easton, Penn., November 10th, 1828; died May 25th, 1917, at the home of his daughter near Altona, Mo., aged 88 years, 6 months and 15 days. Mr. Carey was united in marriage with Lucy O. Jenks, in DeCalb county, Illinois, Sept. 2, 1859, to this union five children were born, three of which are living. They are, Mrs. O. C. Cook, of Altona, at whose home he died, F. S. Carey, of Ottowa, Kans. And C. W. Carey, of Beadle, Kans. His wife died in Kansas City in 1901. The deceased was one of the early pioneers of the western country. In 1849 he made the trip by water from the east to Goldfield, Calif. He located in Kansas in 1870 where he lived until 1900 at which time he came to this state. When a young man he united with the Lutheran Church and remained a member until the time of his death. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday, May 27, and the burial was in the Altona cemetery. Carr was the undertaker in charge.

Jonne Dee Carpenter, age 82, resident of Kansas City, Mo., died of complications resulting from Alzheimer's on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at the Seasons Care Center in Kansas City, Mo.. Jonne was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Rich Hill, MO, the daughter of Arch T. Elmore and Helen Von Smith. She married Francis M. Carpenter on April 17, 1949, in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1990. She was active in the Nevada Regional Medical Center and will be remembered as a loving mother and a great cook. Jonne is survived by two daughters, Lisa Carl and Denise Morrison, both of Leawood, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Karen Aman of Harrisonville, Mo., and Sally Stansberry of Eatonville, Wash.; four grandchildren, Michael and Marc Morrison, and Natalie and Madeline Carl; eight step-grandchilren; and several step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Francis and a sister, Jeanne Pischel. Martha Adelle Carrier, age 80, of Harwood, Mo., passed away Monday, June 11, 2007, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo. She was born July 21, 1926, in Harwood, Mo., to the union of Oscar William and Mabel Elizabeth (Wilson) Waggoner. Martha attended grade school locally in Harwood and then high school in El Dorado Springs, Mo. After graduating she also attended Cottey College in Nevada, for one year. On July 16, 1944, she was united in marriage to James Edward Carrier in Fort Scott, Kan., and to this union three sons were born. During her husbands military years in the Air Force, the family lived in many parts of the United States including: Virginia, Kansas, New York, South Dakota and Alaska, and also two bases overseas in Okinawa and Germany. In 1972, after Jim's retirement from the Air Force, they once again made their home in Harwood. Upon their return, Jim worked for the United States Postal Service and Martha worked as the Deputy Circuit Clerk of Vernon County. In her spare time Martha enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was known to be an excellent pie maker. She was a long-time member of the Harwood United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, El Dorado Springs Chapter No. 440 for more than 50 years. Survivors include her husband, James Carrier of the home in Harwood; three sons, Dr. James D. Carrier and his wife Connie of Lakeland, Fla., Dr. Gary A. Carrier and his wife Becky of Cape Coral, Fla., and Bill Carrier and his wife Mary of Parkville, Mo.; six grandchildren, Laura Moloney, Heather Carrier, Mark Carrier, Christopher Carrier, Jason Carrier and Benjamin Carrier; four great-grandchildren, Colby Moloney, David Moloney, Rebecca Moloney and Emily Carrier. Martha was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Tristan Carrier. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 14, at the Harwood United Methodist Church in Harwood. D. M. Carroll Rites Held Sat. -- Funeral rites for D. M. Carroll were held Saturday, Mar. 16, 1968 at the Rockville Methodist Church. Interment was in the Rockville Cemetery under the direction of the Janssen Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs, Mo. Dora M. Carroll, son of Z. T. Carroll and Josephine (Hoover) Carroll was born April 11, 1879 near Taberville, Mo., and departed this life March 14, 1968 at the age of 88 years 11 months and 3 days. He grew to manhood near Taberville, Mo. He was untied in marriage to Bertie Long, October 25, 1903 and to this union five children were born. Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie, Dec. 20, 1930; his parents, three sisters and one brother. He was converted and baptized in the Baptist Church in 1907. Mr. Carroll was untied in marriage to Meredith Norton, March 10, 1934, and had been employed by the MK and T Railroad for 34 years, having retired in 1945. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 341 AF & Am, joining in 1934, and was a Past Master. Mr. Carroll held membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, joining the Star in 1939 and was a Past Patron. He was a devoted companion, father, and friend to all. His cheerful manner awarded him friendship to all who knew him. Surviving are his wife, Meredith of the home; a daughter, Norma Nolan, one son, D. M. Jr., and two grandchildren of Florida. One son-in-law, Chas. Nolan, one sister, Lula Harleman, Independence, Mo., one brother Orriss Carroll, Cambridge, Mass., Several nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.

Edith Irene Caskey, 82, of Butler, MO., died Dec. 19, 1994 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. The funeral was held Dec. 21 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler. Mrs. Caskey was born Oct. 1, 1912 to Ira Oliver and Anna Lucille Rainey Anderson in Prescott, Kan. One of 11 children, she spent part of her childhood in rural Prescott, Kan., before moving to Hume, MO., in the 1920s. On Oct. 10, 1931 she married James Alfred Caskey, and to this union five children were born. Because of husband employment at Peabody Coal Company, she moved to Freeberg, Ill., in 1957; to Forsythe, Mont., in 1970; and to Butler in 1974. Caskey and wife, Kay, of Butler, and Judge Ray Lee Caskey and wife, Jeri Leigh, of Alton, Mo.; two brothers, Charles Anderson of Columbia, MO., and Kenneth Anderson and wife, Frances, of Drexel, MO.; two sisters, Betty Barker of Fort Scott, Kan., and Virginia Finley of Hume, MO.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. James Alfred Caskey, 91, Butler, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler. Services were Feb. 1 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Mr. Caskey was born Jan. 2, 1912 in Webber, Kan., to Ira and Daisy Adaline Grahm Caskey. One of five children he moved with his parents to Hume, MO., shortly after he was born. On Oct. 10, 1931 he was married Edith Irene Anderson who preceded him in death on Dec. 19, 1994. To this union a daughter and four sons were born. He worked as a section crew member for the Kansas City Southern Railroad out of Hume until 1942 when he began his long time employment for Hume Sinclair Coal Company. His first assignment was at Tiger Mine near the Missouri - Kansas line in the pit and on and around the Marion 5560 shovel-the world's largest stripper and in 1948 was advanced to night superintendent. In 1957 he left for River King Peabody Coal Mine near the Missouri-Kansas line in Freeberg, Ill., where he was promoted to Superintendent, and after 13 years, assumed the duties of Superintendent at Big Sky Mine in Colstrip Mont. He was transferred back to Missouri in 1974 and was Superintendent at Power Peabody Coal Mine at Montrose, MO., until his retirement on July 31, 1978. Mr. Caskey was a Third Degree Mason and served as Past Master in the Blue Lodge of both Hume and Foster, was a 32nd Degree in the Scottish Rite of Kansas City and has received his 50-year pin from the Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the Butler First Baptist Church. Fishing, hunting duck and goose were favorite pastimes as well as working in his vegetable garden, strawberry patch and apple tree orchard. During the past few years he enjoyed meals and fellowship at the Butler Senior Citizens Center where the family has established a memorial. he was always a great supporter of his children's political aspirations and continued his wife's tradition of making pecan pies. He a daughter Velma May and husband Edward T.C., of Lansing, Kan.; four sons, Mayor J. Robert Caskey and wife, Alice, of Windsor, MO., Leon Caskey and wife, Shirley, of Clinton, MO., Sen. Harold L. Caskey and wife, Kay, of Butler, and Judge Ray Lee Caskey and wife, Jeri Leigh, of Alton, Mo.; three sister-in-law, Marion Caskey, North Kansas City, MO., Virginia Finley, Hume, and Betty Barker, Fort Scott, Kan.; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Anderson and wife Frances, Drexel, MO.; eight grand children; 16 great grand children; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene; grand daughter Linda May Shaffer; brother Ira Jr. Caskey; and three sisters Thelma Weicher, Myrtle Garrett and Goldie Allen.

Maletha Ellen Catron, daughter of Andrew Moles and Rebecca Garner Moles was born November 29, 1873 at Cartwright, Kentucky and passed away at the Country Side Nursing Home in Butler, Mo., January 1, 1969. On June 12, 1890 she was united in marriage with Sylvester V. Catron at Albany, Kentucky. Eight children were born to this union. Five survives. Mr. and Mrs. Catron moved from Kentucky to a farm southeast of Adrian in 1892. They remained here until after the turn of the century when they moved to Ballard and later moving to Adrian. Maletha Ellen was converted at an early and became a member of the Baptist church. She was a most active Christian worker until her health failed. The surviving children are: Troy and George Catron of Adrian, Mac Catron of Nevada, Mrs. Ray (Velma) Bartlett, Joplin and Mrs. Ernest (Delores) Bell of Archie. There are also fourteen grandchildren and forty eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, husband and three sons, Earnest, Jim, and Paul on March 17, 1968. She will be sadly missed by relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 4, 1969 at the First Baptist Church. Interment in Altona cemetery under the direction of Atkinson-Dickey Funeral Home, Adrian.

Martha Alice Belle Yoder Catron, 94, Nevada, passed away on Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. She was born Feb. 9, 1912, in Cass County, Mo., to David Augustine Yoder and Ethel Alice Mullen Yoder. She was married to William McKinley "Mac" Catron on Oct. 8, 1931, in Adrian, Mo. Martha grew up on the family farm in Garden City, Mo., and graduated from Archie High School in 1931. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and served in many capacities during her active years. Martha had a great love for the Lord and for her family. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother extraordinaire. Survivors include two sons, David and his wife Gail, Haslett, Mich., Lyle and his wife Linda, Nevada; six grandchildren, Angie Catron, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Bethany Taylor and her husband Matt, Lansing, Mich.; Michelle Berndt, Lansing; Christen Berndt, Lansing; Shane Catron, Woodbury, Minn.; Andrea Stiles and her husband Trent, Fort Scott, Kan.; and one great-grandson, Camden Stiles, Fort Scott. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, Edwin Yoder, Garden City, Mo. A worship service and a celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, Nov. 22, at the First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Marion Catron had been seriously ill with heart trouble for sometime. She was at the Ellett hospital in Appleton City for awhile, but had been brought home where her condition continued to grow worse and resulted in her death Friday evening at the age of 65 years. Quiet and unassuming, Mrs. Catron was a devoted wife and mother. Her life was dedicated to the rearing and education of her children. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband and five sons: Smith of the home; John who lives east of Spruce; Spurgeon, enlisted in the army; Roosevelt of Liberty; Herbert of Belton; also two grandchildren, Dolores and Donald. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Spruce Sunday afternoon and she was laid to rest in the Radford cemetery.

VESTER CATRON DIES TUESDAY EVENING; PLAN RITES TODAY - Well Known Adrian Man Had Been Area Resident Since 1892; Wife and Six Children Survive. - Sylvester V. (Vester) Catron, a resident of north Bates county for nearly sixty years, passed away at Memorial hospital in Butler late Tuesday. He had been in failing health for many months. Sylvester V. Catron, the son of James and Elizabeth Oakes Catron, was born February 14, 1870, at Cartwright, Kentucky. He was 81 years of age at the time of his death. Sylvester Catron grew to young manhood in the community of his birth. June 12, 1890, he was united in marriage with Miss Maletha E. Moles at Albany, Kentucky. Eight children were born to this union, six of whom, with Mrs. Catron, survive. Mr. and Mrs. Catron moved from Kentucky to a farm southeast of Adrian in 1892. They remained here until after the turn of the century, when they moved to Ballard. Mr. Catron entered the blacksmithing trade at Ballard and later operated a shop at Altona before moving with his family to Adrian in 1917. He continued to work as a blacksmith after moving here and remained active in his chosen profession until about five years ago. Sylvester Catron was converted to Christianity at the age of 14 and became a member of the Baptist church. He was a most active Christian worker throughout his long life. He served as a deacon of the Baptist church at Altona and occupied a similar position in the Adrian church at the time of his death. The surviving children are: Troy and George Catron of Adrian; McKinley (Mac) Catron, Nevada; Paul Catron, Butler; Mrs. Ray (Velma) Bartlett, Joplin, and Mrs. Ernest (Delores) Bell of Archie. There are also eight grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Catron will be held this (Thursday) afternoon, September 27, at the Adrian Baptist church. Interment will be made the Altona cemetery.

Mela Mae Cecil, 80, Foster, died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born Aug. 10, 1926 to Davie George and Beulah Mullins Dotson in Osceola. Mae was one of seven children. In 1946 she married Edward Ballard and had one son, Eddie Ballard. On Jan. 16, 1956, she married William "Billy" Cecil and had anohter son, Rodger James Cecil. She raised two grandchildren, Angela Ballard Swarnes and Charles Edward Ballard. Along with being a housewife, she was a loving mother and grandmother. Mae lived with and was taken care of by Angela and her family for the last three years of her life. She enjoyed fishing, camping, canning tomatoes and teaching children to tap dance and watching them perform at local fairs and nursing homes. Mae was baptized at the Ohio Street United Methodist Church in 1938. Mae is survived by two sons, Ed Ballard and his wife, C.J., Amsterdam and Rodger Cecil and companion, Brenda, Foster; two grandchildren, Angela Swarnes and her husband, Jimmie, Rich Hill and Chuck Ballard, Deltona, Fla.; six great grandchildren, William "Goob" Swarnes, Samantha Swarnes, Jennifer Swarnes, Shelby Ballard, Kyla Ballard and J.R. Carroll; special daughters, Patty Thomas, Butler and Sue Holsinger, Rich Hill; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billy in 1999; three brothers; three sisters; and granddaughter, Lucy Ballard. Graveside services were Wednesday, May 30, at the Oak Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler.

She was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Riverdale, Neb., to George Edward Davis and Nellie Ernestine Magoon Davis. She was married Feb. 5, 1938, in Nevada, Mo., to Clarence E. Center and he preceded her in death March 28, 1984. Mrs. Center was born in Riverdale, and came to Vernon County, Mo., as a young girl and lived in this area most of her life. She was a member of the Walker Christian Church in Walker, Mo. She was herself a caregiver and enjoyed helping others. She was a friend to all who knew her. Survivors include one son, Ronald Center and his wife Linda, Fort Scott, Kan.; two daughters, Nadine Easter and her husband Roy, Clinton, Mo., Kathy Dade and her husband Monty, Golden City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Bill Center and his wife Laurie, Lolo, Mont., Ronette Center and Scott Center, both of Fort Scott, Kan., Jackie Scott and her husband Ben, McCune, Kan., Kayla Dade and Janessa Dade, both of Golden City; four step-grandchildren, James Easter, Rita Ward, Jacky Clark and Vicki Gilbert and three great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Bob Davis and his wife Mary Lou, El Dorado Springs; one sister, Dallas Goodman, Schell City, Mo. Ralph Duwayne "Wayne" Chamberlain, age 51, lost his battle with cancer on Sept. 29, 2006, at his home in Independence. He was born the second child of Ralph and Katherine Chamberlain on Jan. 29, 1955 at Butler. Wayne was an automobile painter and had worked at AAA Auto for 11 years and for KC Car paint for 25 years. He loved what he did and even after having a major surgery and during chemotherapy for cancer went back to work after only two weeks out of the hospital on limited hours. He worked until the business shut down and by then he was too ill to work.

Graveside services for James "Jim" Chambers will be Sunday April 13, 2008 at West Point Cemetery in Amsterdam, Missouri. James A. Chambers, age 63 of Amsterdam, Missouri died Thursday, April 10, 2008 at his home. He was born June 9, 1944 to A. Leslie and Virginia (Bartley) Chambers in Watonga, Oklahoma. Jim, one of two boys, spent the earlier part of his life in Kansas City, Missouri and graduated in 1962 from Miami R-1 High School in Amsterdam. He furthered his education and obtained an Ag-Business Degree from the University of Missouri in 1967. On June 27, 1975 he rode a motorcycle with his bride to be, Janet Keough, to Miami, Oklahoma where they were united in marriage. To this union, three children were raised. Jim served his country in the United States Army, retiring in 1990 as a Major. During his military career he was stationed in Kansas and Missouri. He was the 5th Army Rifle and Pistol Team Captain. He earned the Distinguished Pistol Badge and the President's 100 Badge, which indicated he was one of the top 100 shooters in the United States Army. Jim was baptized in the Methodist Church. He was a member of the Coldwater Lodge 485 of Drexel. He was past-president of the Linn Valley Lakes Property Owners Association. He enjoyed camping, traveling, playing chess, golfing, raising cattle and spending time with family and friends. His Lab, "Maggie" and his Dachshund, "Belle" gave him great companionship. Jim is survived by his wife, Janet of the home; two sons, Tom Chambers and Dea of Amsterdam, Missouri and Joe Chambers and wife Joy of Kansas City, Missouri; a daughter, Shannon Wallace and husband Joe of Drexel, Missouri; one brother, Leslie Chambers of Amsterdam, Missouri; a cousin, Preston Chambers of Independence, Missouri and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jeffry Mark "Jeff" Chambers, age 48, of Bolivar, MO, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009. He was born on September 17, 1960 in Butler, MO, the son of Eugene A. Chambers and Jeann E. (Eichler) Chambers. Jeff began working at his hometown Sonic in Butler, MO, while in high school. The first drive-in Jeff ran was a Sonic Restaurants Inc. store in Sugar Creek, MO. In 1986 Jeff became the Managing Partner of the first Excel Sonic Drive-In in Aurora, MO. Jeff then moved to Bolivar, MO, in 1988 where he was the Managing Partner of the Bolivar Sonic. Jeff became a Co-Director of Operations and shareholder for the Excel Sonic Group in 1993. In 2001, Jef became the Chief Operating Officer for Excel Sonic Group which was his position until his death. Jeff received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his Sonic career. The most notable award was the National Sonic Operational Excellence Award in 1999. Jeff served two terms on the Sonic Franchise Advisor Council Board. The Sonic World has lost one of the best in Jeff. Jeff enjoyed golf and was a member at the Silo Ridge Golf Club in Bolivar. He also enjoyed being on his farm and working on his immaculate lawn. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Chambers, and his father, Eugene Chambers. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lesia Chambers of the home in Bolivar; one daughter, Jessica Skinner and husband Zachary of Kansas City, Mo.; his mother, Jeanne E. Chambers of Butler, Mo.; one brother, Larry Chambers of Gladstone, Mo.; and one sister, Vicki Porter of Butler, Mo. Also nieces and nephew, Lori Chambers, Kyle Arrington, Jennifer Kash and Jonathan Porter. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the Butler Funeral Home in Bolivar, Missouri. Tom was born February 25, 1950 in Butler, MO, the son of Russell H. and Marjorie M. (Camerer) Chandler. He was a 1968 graduate of Butler High School. Tom was a dairy farmer since he was 15. He started his own farm in 1992. He was a charter member of the Elks Lodge in Butler. He was on the Bates County Fair Board and was a member of the Bates County Cattlemen Association. He enjoyed rodeos and had participated in many when he was younger. He also participated in the Cattlemen's Golf Tournament each year. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Chandler. He is survived by his father, Russell Chandler of Butler, MO; one son, Justin W. Chandler and his companion, Matt Davis of Lenexa, KS; one daughter, Tina Jennings and her husband, Lyle of Butler, MO; three brothers, Wesley A. Daniel W. Chapman died at the Norman Cruse home in Adrian, Sunday, March 25, 1928; aged 73 years, 6 months and 2 days. Mr. Chapman was born in Ohio, September 23, 1854. Came with his parents to Bates county, Mo., in 1866, locating near Altona, where he spent the remaining years of his life except the short time he has resided in Adrian. He was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Minerva Watson (we have not the date of marriage). Mrs. Chapman preceded him in death on June 3, 1922. To this union three children were born, viz: Davie, Lydia and Daisy, all of whom died in early childhood. In early life Mr. Chapman united with the Altona Methodist Church and remained a faithful member until death. For some years past Mr. Chapman had been in feeble health, during which time he had been cared for by his niece, Mr. N. H. Cruse. Mr. Chapman was a good citizen and stood well in the community where he spent most of the years of his life. He is survived by four brothers and two sisters, Chas. And Frank Chapman, of Adrian, George, of Kansas City, Wilse, of Ponca City, Oklahoma; Mrs. I. A. McGill, of Valley Center, Kansas, and Mrs. T. K. Thompson, of Shawnee township. Funeral services for Mr. Chapman were held Tuesday afternoon from the Altona Baptist church. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Fred Wayland Chapman, 94, El Dorado Springs, was born Dec. 12, 1913, in Stroud, OK, to Pleasant and Hattie Edmonson Chapman. He passed away from this life on Sept. 14, 2008. As a two-year old, he moved with his family in a covered wagon from Oklahoma to Milford. His childhood was spent in Milford and Lamar. The family relocated several times but Fred's life was spent in Missouri except for about four years near Mound City, KS. In 1934, the Chapman family moved to Vernon County where he met the two most significant persons in his life. During a revival meeting in a small country church, Fred met Jesus his Savior whom he served faithfully and with Him he now resides. Also, he met a young lady, Iva Worthington, who was attending the same meeting. Fred and Iva were married March 18, 1936. This last March they celebrated their 72nd anniversary. Three girls were born to Fred and Iva: Shirley, Evelyn and Sharon. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. In 1980, after 45 years as a farmer, mostly in Vernon County, he retired from the farm and he and Iva moved to El Dorado Springs where he spent the rest of his life. His continuing interest in the farm was worked out in a small garden and lawn which he tended himself until the last few weeks of his life. Fred and Iva were faithful members of Union Hall Baptist Church where they attended regularly up until their health no longer permitted. They made fond and lasting friendships among the church family at Union Hall. Fred was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Don; and two sisters, Elsie Hall and Murriel Smith. He is survived by his wife, Iva; three daughters and their husbands: Shirley and Leon Caskey, Evelyn and Larry Warden and Sharon and Don Brenton; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday, Sept. 19, in the Hackleman Chapel. Interment will follow in Hume Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

OBITUARY - We are pained to chronicle the death of our esteemed friend and neighbor Geo. L. Chapman, who departed this life on the third inst. at his home in Grand River township. Mr. Chapman was born in Madison county, Ohio in 1828, where he married Miss Winnie Keen in 1858. (sic) He served with gallantry in the Union army during the war. In 1868, shortly after its close, he came to Bates Co. with his family, where he continued to reside until the time of his death. Deceased left a wife and seven children to mourn his loss, five boys and two girls. The sons, emulating the example of their father, are citizens of sterling worth, sober, honest, respected, and industrious, and are numbered among our best citizens. The daughters are married to worthy citizens of the community. All were in attendance at his bed-side when he passed away. Death was no surprise to him, he had long suffered from pulmonary trouble contracted during his term of service in the army, and when it came, he met it with patient fortitude, expressed a willingness to go, and exhorted his weeping wife and children to meet him in Heaven. Mr. Chapman was a Christian; and Christianity with him was practical. He followed the Golden Rule, was blessed with many friends, and no enemies. Our whole community joins in sympathy with the bereaved wife and family.

MRS. WEBB CHAPMAN DEAD. - Mrs. W. D. Chapman died at her home, near Altona, Wednesday morning, January 4th, 1922, after an illness of several months duration; aged 63 years, 3 months and 17 days. Minnie Watson was born in Ohio, September 17th, 1858. She came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Watson, to Bates county, Missouri in 1866, locating near Altona, where she spent the remainder of her life. On November 18th, 1879, she was united in marriage with W. D. Chapman. To this union three children were born, and all died in childhood. More than forty years ago Mrs. Chapman was converted and united with the Methodist church. During all of those years she was an active worker in the church, and her influence for good in the community where she spent most of the years of her active life was great. Mrs. Chapman always responded to the needs of her neighbors in an effective way. Her sunny disposition and sweet spirit made her a welcome parsonage in all community activities. She was a good woman and will be sadly missed by her wide circle of friends. The husband has the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends to the loss of his companion. One brother, William Watson, survive to mourn his loss. The funeral services for Mrs. Chapman will be held from the Altona Methodist church, Thursday afternoon. Burial will be made in the Altona cemetery.

CHAPPELL, Edith Cecelia BURR

Edith Cecelia Burr was born October 2l, 1869 in Port Sarnia, Canada oldest child of James and Margaret (Murdy) Burr. She came with her parents to Missouri when 3 mos. of age. She spent her early years and received her schooling in Maryville, Missouri. She was united in marriage to Sonville Chappell January 30, 1889. Mr. Chappell passed away in 1932. To this union were born seven children, all living. John of Appleton City; Roland of Rockville; Blanche Handford of Clarinda, IA; Burt of Pleasant Hill, MO; Harve of Kansas City, MO; Pearl Meyer and Ethel Freyer of Rockville. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren. She was the last of her brothers and sisters. Mrs. Chappell was baptised and became a member of the Baptist Church in l90l. Mr. and Mrs. Chappell with their family moved to their home east of Rockville in 1910, and later in life moved to Rockville and transfered their membership to the Church of Christ and remained a member til their death. Mrs. Chappell had been in poor health the last 6 yrs. and passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Burt Meyer August 29, l957 at the age of 87 years, 10 months and 8 days. In looking through Mrs. Chappell's Bible, we found a clipping marked and worn and all who knew her she lived by it. "Lord help me live from day to day." "In such a self-forgetful way, that even when I kneel to pray, my prayers will be for others." Funeral services were held at the Rockville Methodist Church September 1, 1957. Burial was at Rockville Cemetery. Eckhoff and Walker were in charge of arrangements.

CHAPPELL, Sonville P.

S. P.Chappell, one of Rockville's oldest and most respected citizens died at his home in the west part of town Thursday about 7:30 pm. of apoplexy. He had been enjoying his unusual health and had finished doing chores when he complained of severe pain. Mrs. Chappell became alarmed and phoned for the Dr. who arrived in a few minutes, but the end came while sitting in a chair as the Dr. arrived. Mr. Chappell was born near Trenton in Grundy Co., MO on Feb. 5, 1853 and was at the time of his death 79 years 2 months and 23 days old. He grew to manhood in Grundy Co. and received his education at Edinburg College at Trenton. In l889 he was married to Miss Edith C. Burr of Maryville, MO. where they first lived near Trenton, afterward removing to Pawnee City, Nebraska where they resided for a time. Afterwards returning to Missouri, where he passed the remainder of his life. Seven children were born to Mr.and Mrs. Chappell,as following: Henry H of Lakeview, OR; Burt C. of Kansas City; Blanche Belle Watson of Fedora, S.D.; John W. of Appleton City; Roland E; Pearl Bell Meyer and Ethel Bell Freyer of this place. Besides his wife and seven children, he is survived by 23 grandchildren, sister, Mrs. Maggie Younger, four Brothers; Fielding Chappell of Pine Bluff, WY; Robert Chappell of Trenton, MO; J. D. Chappell of Sterling, NE; J. C. Chappell of Maryville, MO; besides a host of other friends and relatives who morn the passing of this kindly spirited man who by his kindly bearing and sterling worth friends with everyone with whom he came in contact. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church at Rockville on Sunday, after which the remains were laid at rest in the city cemetery.

MRS. WILLIAM CHITTY OBITUARY - Dorothy Iru McLay was born at Altona, Mo., February 22, 1916 and passed away at the Memorial hospital, Butler, Wednesday, August 30, 1933; aged 17 years, 6 months and 8 days. The death of Mrs. Chitty came as a shock to her friends as she was sick only a few days with an attack of appendicitis. Mrs. Chitty grew to womanhood in the Altona community. She attended school at that place and was a sweet, cheerful scholar and a favorite among her schoolmates, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to make others happy. At the age of 13 years she was converted but was never united with any church. August 20, 1931 Dorothy was united in marriage to William Chitty and the happy couple made their home since that time on at the farm In their home community. Besides her husband she leaves her mother, Mrs. Ina Chitty; father, Albert McLay, and one brother Edwin McLay, besides other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Altona church Friday afternoon. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six, funeral directors.

Frances Bell Poindexter, daughter of Henry and Mary Poindexter, was born in Boone county, Missouri, January 23, 1870, and passed away at her home near Altona, Missouri, March 1, 1926, at the age of 56 years 1 month and 8 days. She came with her parents to Bates county, in 1880. She was united in marriage to James C. Chitty, October 12th, 1898, who with seven children, John, Ovas, Lark, Harlan, Beatrice, Hazel and William, all of the home address, and two grand children, J. B. and Harold Mason, survive her. She also leaves three sisters and six brothers, Mrs. Mollie Davis, Nevada; Mrs. Addie Beamon, Kechi, Kansas; Mrs. Lucy Winters, Twin Falls, Ida; Wm. Poindexter, Drexel, Mo., Luther Poindexter, Johnson City, Mo.; Bush, Roy and Walter Poindexter of Johnstown, Mo.. She was a true friend and neighbor. She was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Much of her life was spent in the service of others. She was a faithful wife and mother and loved by all who knew her. She was converted to the Christian faith and joined the Antioch church at the early age of 13 years. The funeral was held at the Christian church at Altona, Wednesday afternoon. There was a very large crowd in attendance, more than could get in the house, showing the splendid esteem in which she was held. Interment in Altona cemetery.

Ina Cecil Owens, only child of Myrtle Yancey and Edwin Owens, was born December 23, 1894 at a farm east of Altona, Mo. And passed away at the Pine Tree Nursing Home in Butler, Mo. Where she had been a patient for the past six and one-half years. At the time of passing she was 74 years, 6 months and 23 days. Ina's entire life was spent in or near Altona, with the exception of a few years spent in Kansas City, Mo. At an early age she united with the Altona Christian church. In June of 1913 she was united in marriage to Albert McLay, to this union was born two children, a daughter Dorothy and a son Edwin, both preceded her in death, also her father and mother. On December 18, 1929, she was united in marriage to John H. Chitty of Altona. The survivors are her husband, John of the home, three grandsons, Jim McLay, Fred McLay and Pat McLay and one great grandson, Jimmie McLay all of Butler, three cousins, Nettie Burton, Harrisonville, Gentry Dunn, St. Joseph, Clint Cantrell of Adrian, a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Friday, July 18, 1969 at the Atkinson-Dickey Chapel, Adrian. Interment was in the Altona Cemetery.

PROMINENT FARMER DEAD - James Carpenter Chitty died at his home three miles northeast of Altona, Saturday, January 2, 1932; aged 61 years, 8 months and 20 days. Mr. Chitty had been in feeble health for more than a year and his death did not come as a surprise to his family and friends. James Carpenter, son of Samuel and Margaret Chitty, was born at Carpentersville, Shannon county, Mo., April 22, 1870. In his boyhood he came to Bates county where he spent the remaining years of his life in the Altona neighborhood, where he was engaged in farming. Mr. Chitty was industrious, energetic and a tireless worker. Starting in life with no wealth he accumulated a considerable amount of property and enjoyed the respect of his neighbors and friends. He was always ready to do a neighborly kindness to those in need and was respected because of his spirit of helpfulness. Mr. Chitty was a good judge of values and a successful business man. October 12, 1893, Mr. Chitty was united in marriage with Miss Frances Bell Poindexter who preceded him in death March 1, 1927. To this union seven children were born, viz: John H., Ovis B., James L., Harlen C., William E., Hazel M., and Mrs. Beatrice McElwain, all at the home address. Besides the children he is survived by one brother, M.B. Chitty, of Kansas City, Kansas, and two sisters, Mrs. H. G. Cook and Mrs. John Houtz of Kansas City, and seven grandchildren and many friends. Mr. Chitty had a firm belief in God but belonged to no Church. In his passing the community lost a pioneer citizen and an active business promoter. Funeral services for Mr. Chitty were held Monday afternoon from the Altona Baptist church, conducted by Hon. H. O. Maxey of Butler. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six funeral directors.

John Henry Chitty, son of James Carpenter Chitty and Frances Belle Poindexter, was born September 24, 1895 in Bates County, and departed this life at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 1 day at the Veterans Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, June 25, 1975, after an illness of several months. He had lived his entire life in or near the Altona community, Bates County, Missouri, with the exception of approximately six-months service in Company E, 70th Infantry during World War I. He was united in marriage to Ina Owen McLay on December 18, 1929. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ina; his stepchildren, Ed McLay and Dorothy McLay Chitty; and his brother, Harlen Chitty. He is survived by three stepchildren, Jim, Fred, and Pat McLay; three step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ovis B., Adrian; James L., Butler; and William E., Adrian; two sisters, Beatrice McElwain, Parkville, Hazel Nelson, Butler; nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services were held Friday, June 27, 1975 at the Atkinson-Dickey Chapel.

George Edward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ewing Chrisman, was born at Independence Mo., September 16, 1860, and passed away at his home in Adrian, Mo., May 27, 1932; aged 71 years, 8 months and 11 days. In September 1876, with his parents, he came to Bates county and spent the remainder of his life here. Mr. Chrisman had been afflicted for 50 years and confined to his home most of the time for the past 25 years, and his suffering during all of these years was continuous and intense. His condition was such as to elicit the deepest sympathy of all who knew him. George was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister. Two sisters, Mrs. Anna Corbin and Mrs. Ida Haley survive him, he is also survived by three nephews one niece and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Chrisman were held Saturday afternoon from his late home. Interment was made in the Burdett cemetery by Creath & Six funeral directors.

MARY ELLEN CHRISMAN DEAD - Miss Mary Ellen Chrisman was born in Independence, Mo. January 22nd, 1865, and died at her home near Burdett, Thursday, April 29th, 1915; aged 50 years, 3 months and 7 days. Miss Chrisman came with her parents to Bates county in 1877 and located on the farm where she died, one and one-half miles north of Burdett, where she spent the remainder of her life on the old homestead. In early life she was converted and united with the Methodist church and lived a faithful Christian life. She is survived by two brothers and two sisters. Miss Chrisman was an excellent woman. Funeral services for Miss Chrisman were held from the home Friday, burial was made in the Burdett cemetery.

Charles Clarence Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Clark, was born near Burdette, Missouri, October 10th, 1899, was killed Monday, December 20th, 1915, at 6:30 o'clock a.m. as a result of an explosion of a quantity of dynamite on the Duvall ranch; aged sixteen years. During a revival held at Valley Chapel Christian church by Rev. Pearce, in 1911, he confessed and was baptized by the Church pastor, Rev. Shelton of Butler, but did not unite with any Church organization. Clarence was a good young man and was held in high esteem b a wide circle of friends. He was ambitious to do thing in the world and was away from home to make his own way in the world. His untimely death came as a distinct shock to his wide circle of friends. Besides his parents he is survived by four brothers and four sisters, viz: Stanford B. Clark of Tarkio, Mo. Roy G. Clark, of Adrian, Mo.; Guy Warren of Adrian, Mo.; William H. Warren, Adrian, Mo.; Mrs. T. A. Collins, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. W. D. Nelson of Hickman Mills, Mo.; Mrs. Walter F. Boose, of McCune, Kansas; Mrs. Elisha E. Kelley, of Westover, Texas. Funeral services for Clarence were held from the Burdette Baptist church Wednesday, December 22nd.

Charles Newton Clark, youngest son of Sanford and Minerva Clark, was born in Russellville, Putnam county, Indiana, on March 17, 1858, and after an illness of three weeks departed this life May 30, 1943; aged 85 years, 2 months, and 23 days. He is survived by his wife of the home; also four children, Sanford B. Clark of Nebraska; Mrs. Walter F. (Mattie) Boore of McCune, Kansas; Mrs. E. C. (May) Kelley of Columbus, Kansas, and Roy Z. Clark of Adrian, Mo.; also eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson. One son, Clarence Clark, preceded him in death, December 20, 1915, at the age of 16 years. He came to this community March 1, 1880, and has resided here continuously until the time of his death. While a young man he was converted and held his membership in the Valley Chapel church and continued in the faith until death. He served as superintendent of the Sunday school, and always took an active part in church work. He was well known throughout the county, and was always interested in the welfare of the community. He was always honest and upright in his dealing with his fellowman. Funeral services were held from the Burdett Baptist church Tuesday afternoon, June 1. Burial was made in the Burdett cemetery.

Clara A., daughter of James and Isabelle Bagby, was born in Circleville, Ohio, July 1, 1868, and passed away at her home near Burdette, in Bates county, Mo., Monday, October 24, 1932, being at the time of her death 64 years, 3 months and 23 days of age. On December 23, 1888 she was united in marriage to William Warren. To this union four children were born, Susie B. Collins, of Kansas City, Mo.; Guy M. Warren of Winchester, Kans.; Rhoda B. Anderson, Adrian, Mo.; and William H. Warren, Jr., who gave his life in the World War, October 8, 1918. Mr. Warren preceded her in death, September 8, 1894. On March 15, 1898 she was united in marriage to Charles N. Clark. To this union two sons were born, Charles Clarence, who died December 20, 1915, and Roy Z. Clark of Burdette. Besides the immediate family she is survived by three brothers, William, Noah and Charles Bagby and one sister, Mrs. Will Harris, of Drexel, Mo.; several grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Sister Clark was converted at the age of 16 and united with the Baptist Church at Burdette and has since been a devoted Christian, ever ready to help a friend or neighbor in time of need. From the point of membership she was the oldest member of the Burdette Church. Sister Clark was a home loving Christian mother and always concerned about the welfare of the Church and community. In the passing of Sister Clark has gone from the home a true mother and companion, from the church a loyal member. Funeral services were conducted from the Burdette Baptist church, Wednesday afternoon, October 26, 1932 and the body laid to rest in Burdette cemetery.

Delbert Lynn Clark, 74, Nevada, Mo., passed away on July 7, 2007, in Culpepper Place, Nevada. He was born July 17, 1932, in Vernon County, Mo., to Perry D. Clark and Wilma Grace Wilson Clark. He married Patricia Lee Spencer on Aug. 24, 1951, in Eureka Springs, Ark. Later he married Leoti Highley on May 27, 1986, in Overland Park, Kan., and she survives of their home in Culpepper Place. Lynn grew up in Walker and graduated from Walker High School in 1950. He served in the National Guard in Nevada for six years. Lynn was a member of the Walker Christian Church. He worked as an auto mechanic all his life and drove a school bus for Walker school district for 25 years. He was a 50-year member of the Walker Masonic Lodge AF and AM No. 605, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and a member of the Walker Rebekah Club. Survivors in addition to his wife Leoti include, two sons, Mike Clark and his wife Phyllis, Walker, and Paul Clark, Leawood, Kan.; two stepchildren, Warren Highley and his wife Sonya, Milo, Mo., and Rose Micklich and her husband Bob, Nevada; one grandson, Gary Clark and his wife Shawna, Walker; step-grandchildren, Warren Highley Jr., Matthew Highley and wife Ashley, Robert Micklich and wife Becky, Melissa Micklich, and Veronica Highley; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one stepson, Wayne Highley. Funeral services and Masonic services will be held Wednesday, July 11, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Walker.

MRS. MARY E. CLARK DEAD - Mrs. Mary E. Clark died suddenly at her home in Altona Tuesday, July 24th, 1923; aged, 76 years, 5 months and 10 days. Mrs. Clark was a pioneer settler here and an excellent lady. She is survived by four children, viz: Mrs. Gouge, of this county; J. C. Clark, of Beloit, Kansas; E. S. and John Clark, of Kansas City.

MEREDITH CLARK DEAD - Meredith Clark, aged 89 years, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jake Fizer, near Altona, Thursday, August 12, 1937. Meredith, the son of William and Nannie Clark, was born March 27, 1848, and died August 12, 1937; aged 89 years, 4 months, 15 days. Mr. Clark was united in marriage to Miss Hannah King who preceded him in death in the year 1880. In 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Page, who preceded him in death October 10, 1921. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jake Fizer of Altona; two brothers, George and Thomas Clark of Madison, Mo.; one sister Mrs. William Alexander of Lee's Bury, Mo., and one granddaughter Mrs. Marvin Ogden of near Altona, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Clark were held from the Creath & Six chapel, Saturday, August 14. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Inurnment at later date at Benjamin Cemetery, Amoret, Missouri. George Paul Clay, age 63 of Metz, Missouri died Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Freeman West in Joplin, Missouri. He was born February 27, 1947 to George and Ruby Fern Grimsley Clay in Amoret, Missouri. Paul is survived by two sons, Tracy Clay of Archie, Missouri and Lance Clay of Shawnee, Kansas; three daughters, Carmin Sufficool and husband Tim of Stoutland, Missouri, Melissa Dubuque and husband Steve of Ellisville, Missouri and Alexandria "Sandy" Trammell and husband Ronald of Girard, Kansas; three brothers, Jerry Clay and wife Cecelia of Pleasanton, Kansas, Daryl Clay of Amoret, Missouri and Wendell Clay of Paola, Kansas; three sisters, Jane Jennings and husband William of Foster, Missouri, Helen Huggins and husband Willard of Hume, Missouri and Doris Johnson and husband Kendall of Mound City, Kansas; a sister-in-law, Katherine Clay of Mound City, Kansas; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Clay; and a great-grandson Ashtyn Frank Sufficool.

CLIF FERGUSON KILLED MOTHER-IN-LAW, MRS. AMANDA CLEMENTS, TUESDAY - Tuesday afternoon Clif Ferguson drove to the Clements home in Burdett and shot his mother-in-law, Mrs. Amanda Clements, killing her instantly. For several months Ferguson has been mentally unbalanced but had not at any time shown symptoms of violence. He had spent the winter with his parents east of Burdett, while his wife and children had lived with her parents in Burdett. Ferguson used a shot gun and emptied the contents into Mrs. Clements' left breast. She was sitting in a chair and apparently was not expecting the attack. In fact it is said that Ferguson thought well of Mrs. Clements. The shooting seems to have been an insane freak. We have not been able to get the verdict of the coroners jury. Mrs. Clements was sixty-three years old and had lived in Burdett for a number of years. Deputy Sheriff Black drove to the Ferguson home Tuesday evening, accompanied by H. D. Chambers, and took Ferguson in custody, he was taken to Butler and lodged in jail. The county court has been called in special session today to pass on his sanity. It is an unfortunate affair. Ferguson has a wife and 4 children.

Charles N. Clements died at his home in Adrian, Saturday, May 23, 1936. Aged 78 years, 1 months and 5 days. Mr. Clements was born in Scott county, Illinois, April 18, 1858. On September 18, 1888, he was united in marriage to Amanda M. Blackburn. To this union three children were born, one daughter, Mrs. Geo. Fenton, and his wife preceded him in death. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Clifton Ferguson, Washington. Mo., and a son Armal E. Clements, of Kansas City. One brother, James Clements, of Butler, Missouri, also survives. Mr. Clements spent a great many years of his life in the Burdette community. Several years ago he moved to Adrian where he spent his late years. He was a member of the Adrian Baptist Church. Funeral services for Mr. Clements were held from the Adrian Baptist church, Sunday afternoon. Burial was made in the Burdett cemetery by Creath & Six funeral service.

Larry Joe "Bub" Clements, 45, Deerfield, Mo., passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, unexpectedly at his home. He was born April 10, 1963, in Fort Scott, to Larry Joe Clements Sr. and Diane Elaine Lang Clements. He was married Dec. 17, 2001, in Miami, Okla., to Kenna S. Klumpp and she survives of the home. Larry was born and raised in Fort Scott, and graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1981. He worked for Topco Cabinet Company, Fort Scott. He had also worked for 10 years for the Coca Cola Distributor of Fort Scott. For the past nine years he has worked for Emery Truck Stop in Deerfield. Larry was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 495 in Richards, Mo., and the BPO Elks Lodge in Fort Scott. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and also enjoyed raising cattle. In addition to his wife Kenna, survivors include four children, Brooke Clements, Fort Scott, Jacob Clements, Fort Scott, Aubrey Elkinton and her husband Dusty, and David Klumpp and his wife Joni, all of Deerfield; three grandchildren, which he was "Papa" to, Halley Elkinton, Talya Elkinton and Caden Klumpp; his father, "Joe" Clements and stepmother, Darlene, Fort Scott; two sisters, Donna Joe "D.J." Beerbower and her husband David, Fort Scott, and Debbie Mitchell, Fort Scott; five nieces, Sarah Jo Pollock, Jennifer Hull, Katie Jo Hull, ShayLynn Clements and Amanda Clements; one nephew, Jerry Clements, and one great-niece, JoDee Lynn Pollock; father and mother-in-law, Leon and Betty Lou Emery, Deerfield, Mo.; and one bother-in-law, Mike Emery, Richards; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, along with his many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Diane Clements, in 1995. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 5, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment, along with Masonic services, will follow at Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield.

Samuel Hamilton Clements was born in Madison county, Missouri, March 7, 1832. Died at his home in Burdett, Mo., March 22, 1916, aged 84 years, 15 days. When ten years old he moved with his parents to Scott county, Illinois, thence back to Missouri. In 1856 he was married to Elizabeth Moore in Illinois. To this union four children were born, two of whom still survive, viz; C. M. Clements of Bates county, J. W. Clements of Cass county. The others died several years ago. He is also survived by nine grand-children and six great grandchildren. Mr. Clements was a good citizen.

CLIFTON-KUPFER Pauline was born June 24, 1922 to Fred and Elizabeth Kupfer in an unincorporated area of Jackson County. She passed away on May 16, 2008 in Adrian, MO. She married Joseph Clifton on Feb. 21, 1947. This marriage was blessed with four children, Barry, Fred, Richard, and Elizabeth. In addition to her family duties she had an extensive career in the floral industry. At two locations she became part of the "families" of Tobler and Kamp and, of course, the Kupfer Carnation Farm. Her specialty was in creating bridal flowers that made a bride's dream-day a reality. Pauline had an incredible spiritual strength, tested by the loss of all three of her sons to tragic accidents. Her faith was based on the Fatherhood of God, His Son the Christ, and the Holy Spirit. She understood her role was to accept what life gave her, be thankful for it, and share her gifts with others. A lifetime member of the St. Peter U.C.C., she held many leadership positions in the church. She took a keen interest in her children's school activities and maintained many contacts with her own former classmates of the Raytown School District. She was active in the Raytown Historical Society. Proud of her Swiss parentage, she enjoyed the Swiss Society functions. Perhaps meeting with her beloved life-long friends to play Pinochle was her special treat. Preceding her to heaven are her sons Fred, Ricky, and Barry, her parents, and her sister Anna Neese. She is survived by her husband Joseph in Adrian, MO, daughter Elizabeth Chancellor (Allen), granddaughter Suzanne Chancellor, daughter-in-law Nancy Clifton, grandchildren Andrew Clifton (Micah), Pat Clifton, Joe Chancellor (Amanda), and three great-granddaughters, Kaylie and Emmalie Chancellor, and Olivia Clifton. Also left to remember her with love are her brothers, Henry and John and sister-in-law Bonnie Kupfer, and many, many friends. Services will be held at St. Peter's UCC, on Tuesday May 20, 2008. (D.W. PIONEER CITIZEN DEAD - Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Cloud died at her home in Altona, Mo., December 13, 1924; aged 85 years, 6 months and 16 days. Catherine, daughter of John and Catherine Brown, was born in Pike county Mo., June 27, 1839. The Brown family moved to Bates county in an early day and the remaining years of her life were spent here, where she was active in helping in the development of the county. November 4, 1858, she was united in marriage with John Owen. To this union were born two children. John Edwin and Catherine Jane Cantrell, both of whom preceded her in death. John Owen died August 24, 1862. She was united in marriage with D. W. Cloud, December 22, 1881. To this union one son, Leo, was born, he died in infancy. Mrs. Cloud united with the Altona Baptist Church more than thirty-five years ago and was a faithful member of same, always taking a deep interest in the work of the Church. Seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren survive her. Funeral services for Mrs. Cloud were held Monday afternoon from the Altona Baptist church. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Daniel Wellington Cloud, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Cloud, was born April 23, 1834, and departed this life after a long illness, January 13, 1924. He was born in Kentucky and came in early life to Missouri and has long been a resident of Bates county. He was married to Katherine Hickman, April 23, 1855. To this union seven children were born; four having gone before, and the three remaining are; P. T. Cloud, San Pedro, California; J. A. Cloud, Tucson, Arizona; and Elva Cloud, of Arlington, California. Mrs. Cloud died in 1880. He was married a second time to Catherine E. Owen, December 22, 1881. To this union was born one child, Leo, who died at the age of one year. Mr. Cloud had been a Free Mason for many years and at his death was a member of Crescent Hill Lodge of Adrian, Mo., which lodge conducted his burial service. He was converted at sixteen and joined a Baptist church and at the time of his death was a deacon in the Altona Baptist church where his funeral was held. Burial in the Altona cemetery. Our Brother Cloud we shall miss him, but he leaves us a heritage of long life of honesty, simplicity, fidelity, and uprightness before God and man. He leaves two sons, one daughter, his aged, frail and faithful companion with other relatives and friends.

Minnie Katherine Cobb, 90, Archie, MO, died Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Life Care Center of Kansas City in Kansas City, KS. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 18, 2008 at the Atkinson Chapel in Archie, MO. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, MO. Minnie was born June 7, 1918 in Drexel, MO, the daughter of John H. and Magnola (Carmichael) Williams. She attended Maple Grove and Prairie View rural schools and graduated from Drexel High School. Minnie joined the Drexel Methodist Church at a young age and later transferred to the Archie United Methodist Church. Minnie worked for Walters and Son's Grocery Store in the early 1940's and Lake City Ammunition Plant during WWII. In 1947 she married Basil E. Cobb of Archie. Minnie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Basil Cobb on January 29, 1993, one sister, Eula Easterla, three brothers, Ben, Frank and Lester Williams and her son-in-law, Ed Manherz. She is survived by one daughter, Kathy Manherz, Kansas City, KS and one son, John Cobb and his wife, Debbie, Harrisonville, MO; six grandchildren, William Cobb and his wife, Becky, Andrew Cobb and his fiance, April, Kimberly Lincoln and her husband, Todd, Joy Peterson and her husband, Bryon, Chuck Manherz and Kay Manherz; seven great-grandchildren, Jaden and Chase Manherz, Kasha and Ethan Lincoln, Tyler and Evan Cobb and Bridget Peterson and one sister-in-law, Betty Williams, Independence, MO.

COFFMAN, John Melvin

John Melvin Coffman was born Feb. 6, 1915, at home in Mountain Grove, Mo. He was the third child of James and Minnie Coffman. Melvin was united in marriage to Pearl Ellen Moseley, Feb. 21, 1938. To this union six children were born, who all survive: James Buckie and wife Wilma, Betty Lou and husband Ronald Dickerson, Daniel Ray and wife Kathy, John Paul, and Judy Ann and husband Dale Fischer; along with 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. Melvin was proceeded in death by his wife Pearl, his parents James and Minnie Coffman; three brothers, Lester, Olen and Arvin; two sisters, Doris and an infant sister; one grandson, Mark Coffman, and one great-granddaughter, Kayla Ann. Melvin served on the school board for many years at Norwood. He was ordained as a deacon at the Norwood Baptist Church, in 1951. He worked at the milk plan in Mountain Grove. He was a farmer all his life. He moved to Papinville in 1958, where he remained on the farm until his death. He was an active member and deacon at the First Baptist Church in Rich Hill. God sustained him through numerous accidents, because of his faith in God, he always had a positive attitude and everyday was a good day. Dad always spoke his mind and if you didn't like what he said you had the same clothes to get glad in. If you asked Dad how he was, he would say, "mean and ugly" so we knew he was OK. One of Dad's favorite sayings was "it will feel better when it quits hurting." After Dad retired he enjoyed driving his little white truck around, keeping track of what was going on in the community and the fields. He lived a happy and full life. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Alexis Ann Collins, age 5, of Nevada, died as the result of an accident on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at her father's home in Tiffin, Mo. She was born on July 27, 2001, in Nevada, to Randall Lee Collins Jr. and Carol Jean Smith Collins. Alexis was a kindergarten student at Bryan Elementary School in Nevada. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Alexis enjoyed sports and fishing and had a love for pets and farm animals. Alexis is survived by her mother, Carol Pennington, and stepfather, James Pennington, of the home in Nevada; her brother, Randy Collins III, of the home; her grandparents, Bill and Jeanie Smith, of Nevada, Randall Lee Collins, Sr. of Tiffin, Mo., and Joe and Lynna Pennington of Jasper, Mo.; great-grandparents, Marietta Collins of Osceola, Mo., Carol and Henry Geiger of Sterling, Okla., and Floyd Smith, Lawton, Okla., and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins including an uncle Billy Smith of Nevada. Her father, Randall Lee Collins Jr., and her grandmother, Elaine Collins, also lost their lives in the accident. CONNER, John Wendell

John Wendell Conner, 84, Harrisonville, died Jan. 4, 2009, at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville. He was born on a farm in Adrian, Aug. 29, 1924, the son of John Thomas and Leona Clara (Moles) Conner. Mr. Conner was raised on a rural farm in Butler and he attended Butler High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the destroyer USS Sullivan as a radar-man during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He, along with two cousins, Dean Conner and Eugene Conner, were among the first Conner family members to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. After discharge, John attended William Jewell College in Liberty, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in education. He completed college while working a full-time job, playing for the William Jewel Cardinals football team and raising three young children. Following college he worked for the Gallatin Missouri School System where he taught for four years and coached the football team to a state championship in 1954. He then worked as a salesman and later was the regional sales manager for Hills Brothers Shoes. In 1962 he returned to his life passion of teaching and coaching and became a teacher and football coach in Harrisonville. He was the head football coach at Harrisonville from 1965 to 1970. He was a teacher and coach in the Harrisonville School District for 22 years before retiring in 1985. Mr. Conner also had a passion for raising horses. He raised, bred and showed registered paint horses for a number of years and was an early member of the American Paint Horse Association. Preceding him in death were his parents; and two sisters, Maxine Frederick and Delores Poulignot. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Rosa Lee (Evans) Conner, Harrisonville; four daughters, Carol Moody and Janet Moses, both of Harrisonville; Mary Butler, Lee's Summit, and Judy Kuhnhoff, Weatherby Lake; a son, Larry Conner, Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Joan Clay, Harrisonville; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous friends and relatives. Services were Jan. 7 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville. Burial was in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville.

COOK, Hattie L. CAREY

Mrs. Hattie L. Cook of Adrian passed away Friday morning, February 28 at 5:45 o'clock. She was at the home of a son, Elmer, near Ballard, at the time of her death. Although Mrs. Cook had been failing in health for some time she was not seriously ill until about five days before her passing. She had made a trip to Adrian, Friday, February 21, with her son, Elmer, to secure a birth certificate for another son, Clyde, who recently had moved to San Diego, California. The following Monday she became much worse and rapidly declined until the time of her departure from this life. Hattie L. Carey was born in Van Buren, DeKalb county, Illinois, April 14, 1863. She came with her parents to Kansas in 1871 where she lived until her marriage with Owen G. Cook, June 16, 1891. To this union two sons were born, Clyde, of San Diego, California, and Elmer, of near Ballard, Missouri. These sons, with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, are left to mourn her passing. Also one brother, George W. Carey, of Kissimmee, Florida, and a number of nieces and nephews in and near Ottawa, Kansas, many of whom attended the funeral service. Mrs. Cook, after the death of her husband, moved to Adrian. It was about eight years ago that she made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord of life, was baptized by Re. F. B. Sampson, and was received into the fellowship of the Adrian Baptist Church. She was always faithful in attendance upon the services of the church and remained a regular contributor and attendant to the end of her earthly journey. Her faithfulness was noticeable remarkable due to the fact that she was unable to hear but very little in the church services. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, March 2, at the Baptist church. Interment was in Altona cemetery with Creath and Six in charge.

COOK, Lorena BRICKER

Lorena Bricker was born in Marion county, Ohio, April 17, 1937, and died at the home of her son, Owen Cook, February 6, 1924; aged 86 years, 9 months and 20 days. She was united in marriage with Armel S. Cook; to this union 2 children were born, Maggie Baker, Kansas City, and Owen Cook of Adrian. Besides her two children she leaves one sister, Mrs. Margaret Temple, who lived with her at the home of Mr. Cook, where they both have had the very best of attention and care. Surely the Cook family will receive some reward for caring for the aged as Mrs. Cook's father had also made his home with them for many years, until he to was called to answer the summons of death. The subject of our sketch was converted in early life and united with the Methodist church. Those who knew her best can testify that she lived a faithful Christian life.

Owen Grant Cook, died at the home of his son, Clyde Cook, in Adrian, Monday night; aged 66 years, 4 months and 8 days. Mr. Cook was born in Knox Co., Illinois, March 8, 1863. When he was sixteen years old he came to Missouri, where he spent the remaining years of his life. In 1901 he bought a farm one mile west of Aaron in Mingo township, where he continued to reside until quite recently when he came to Adrian to the home of his son, where he could receive medical treatment. June 16, 1891, Mr. Cook was united in marriage with Miss Hattie Carey, of Ottawa, Kansas. To this union two sons were born, viz: Clyde Cook and Elmer Cook, of Adrian. Besides the widow and two sons, Mr. Cook is survived by one sister, Mrs. Maggie Baker, of Kansas City. Mr. Cook was a fine citizen and those who were his closest neighbors were his most loyal friends. He was always kind and obliging, ready to render every possible helpful service. A kind and caring husband and father, devoted to his home. The community in which he lived so long has lost one of its best citizens and his neighbors will deeply mourn his passing. Funeral services for Mr. Cook were held Wednesday afternoon from Altona Baptist church. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery.

Linette Mae Cooper, age 53 of Raytown, Missouri died Saturday, September 12, 2009 at her home in Raytown. She was born March 25, 1956 to Randolph Garfield Sr. and Helen Josephine Brown Cooper in Butler. Linette is survived by her father, Randolph Cooper of Raytown, Missouri; two brothers, Randolph "Sonny" Cooper Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri and Artie Cooper and wife Pat of Grandview, Missouri; brother-in-law, James Burton of Butler, Missouri; nephews, Randy, Eric, Artie Jr., Shawn, Randy, James, Kevin and Ryan; nieces, Michelle, Renee, Nicole, Mahogany, Michelle, Kay-Kay, Marianna, Nikkie and Danielle; and a host of other relatives. She was preceded in death by her mother; two brothers, Nathan and Frank; and one sister Elenora Burton.

PIONEER LADY PASSES - Elizabeth Dorcas Davis parents come from England and settled in Williamson county, Tennessee, where she was born March 10, 1842, where they resided until she was about 12 years of age. They then moved to Jersey county, Ill., where she grew to womanhood and was married to Joseph Cope, April 7, 1858. And in 1872 they moved to Bates county, Mo., where she resided ever since and in Kansas. To this union ten children were born. Three of the, with the father, having passed away before her. She departed this life February 1, 1928, at her son, George's in Kansas City and leaves to mourn her loss two sons, George and Joseph, of Kansas City; Dr. J. L. Cope, of Lexington; Milton Cope, of Blackwell, Okla; Rose Rofests, of Kansas City; Clarsia Adams, of Altona, and Emma Reeder of Adrian. Fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, besides many friends. She united with the Christian Church in her early days and was a faithful Christian all the time until her departing. She knew her Bible well and made it a constant study. She was a kind and loving mother and always had a good word for all.

JOSEPH COPE DEAD - Joseph Cope was born in Jerseyville, Illinois, March 24,1837; aged 86 years, 7 months and 23 days. He was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Davis, April 7, 1858. To this union ten children were born. They are Milton Cope, Seattle, Washington; George and Joseph Cope, of Kansas City; Dr. J. Q. Cope of Lexington, Mo.; Mrs. Emma Reeder of Adrian; Clarsie Adams, of Altona; Rose Robert, of Kansas City; Alvin Cope, Dillie Dickerson and an infant daughter having preceded him in death. His wife survives him. He came to Missouri in 1871, and to Bates county in March 1872, where he spent the remainder of his life, except last year, which was spent in Kansas City. He is also survived by two brothers and five sisters. The body was brought to Adrian Monday and taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Reeder, where funeral services were held Monday. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Beverly Faye Copeland, 55, Archie, died July 31, 2008, at her home near Archie. She was born March 11, 1953, in Holden, the daughter of Delmar Cecil Ayler and Velma Lucille Smith. Mrs. Copeland was employed as a waitress for the Old Cedar Inn and Seven Stop in Garden City, Dinner Bell and Wagon Wheel in Harrisonville, and for Ryan's in Raymore. Later, she was employed as an apartment manager for Hillside and Brookstone Apartments in Independence. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, talking on the phone, her dogs and riding around in her car. She had lived in Holden, Garden City, and Independence before moving to Archie in 2003. Preceding her in death were her infant son, Michael; and her twin infant brothers, Gary and Larry. Surviving are her son, Brian Ayler and wife, Bonnie, Archie; her mother, Lucille Sexson, her father and step-mother, Delmar Ayler and wife, Roseanna and two brothers, Chester Ayler and Ronnie Ayler, all of Harrisonville; four sisters, Debbie Ayler and Janet Henderson, both of Independence, Carol Bandy, Creighton, and Cheryl Cowan, Harrisonville; four grandchildren, Britney, Ethan, Hunter and Lexis; her maternal grandmother, Erma Smith, Harrisonville; other relatives and many friends. Services were Aug. 4 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial was in the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City. (Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City)

Annie F. Chrisman was born January 27, 1869 and died September 26, 1955 at Independence, Missouri at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 29 days. She was child of Ewing and Martha Chrisman, and moved with her parents, when but a child, into the vicinity of Burdette. There she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Dan. W. Corbin in 1894. For a time they made their home near Merwin and later moved to Kansas City, Missouri. She was a member of the Independence Avenue Christian church in Kansas City, and while in Adrian attended the local Christian church. Her husband preceded her in death in 1945, and her only child died in infancy. She is survived by a cousin, Charles W. Fields of Independence, Missouri; and two nephews, Fletcher Haley and Herschel Chrisman. Funeral services were conducted at the Adrian Christian church on Thursday, September 29, 1955. Burial was in Burdette cemetery.

Arthur Daniel Corbin, son of David and Mollie Corbin, was born January 10, 1881 in Bates County, Missouri and departed this life July 16, 1975 at the Bates County Memorial hospital in Butler, Missouri. He spent most of his life in Bates county and was a member of the Burdette Baptist Church. Mr. Corbin was preceded in death by his wife in 1972; one daughter who died in infancy; and also one grandson. He is survived by two sons, Donald Corbin of the home and Harold Corbin of Amoret, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Velma Tucker of Drexel, Mo. And Mrs. Ollie Good of Clovis, New Mexico; 11 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Abbie Ferry of Pratt, Kansas; other relatives and a host of friends. Services were held from the Runyan Chapel in Drexel, Missouri Friday, July 18, 1975. Interment was in Burdette Cemetery under the direction of the Runyan Funeral Home.

Attie Lee Hardman Corbin, daughter of William Isaac and Lydia Alice Hardman was born March 12, 1886 on a farm in Bates County, Mo., and departed this life January 23, 1972 at the Bates County hospital. She was united in marriage to Arthur Daniel Corbin on December 23, 1903 at the home of her parents. She joined the Burdette Baptist church at an early age and lived her entire life in the Burdette community. To this union five children were born, Velma, Ollie, Harold, Don and Lucille, who died in infancy. They also raised their grandson, William K. Corbin. On December 23, 1973 they celebrated their 68th anniversary. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Corbin of the home, two daughters, Velma Tucker, Drexel, Mo.; Ollie Good, Clovis, N. M.; two sons, Don Corbin of the home, Harold Corbin, Amoret, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, one sister, Myrtle Groves, Adrian, Mo.; one nephew, Thornton Hardman, Kansas City. Her mother, father, two sisters and one brother preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at the Burdette Baptist church on January 25, 1972. Interment in Burdette cemetery under the direction of Runyan Funeral home of Drexel.

Donald Lee Corbin, 78, Adrian, Mo., died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 at Medicalodge of Butler, Mo. Graveside services were Nov. 16 at the Burdette Cemetery, Burdette, Mo. Mr. Corbin was born Oct. 31, 1923 in Bates county, Mo., to Arthur D. and Attie Lee Hardman Corbin. One of five children, he grew up in the Burdette community in Bates County where he attended school. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was awarded many medals including the Purple Heart. A farmer by occupation, he lived at home with his parents until they died. He continued to live on the home place until his health began to fail, at which time he made his home at Medicalodge of Butler. He enjoyed country-western music and liked to sing and play the guitar. His favorite season was spring, a time in which he witnessed newness and growth. He loved to walk and enjoy nature. He was fond of animals, especially a dog named Deanie. He leaves a sister-in-law, Verna Corbin, Amoret, Mo.; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother , Harold Corbin; and three sisters, Lucille Corbin, Velma Tucker Holliday and Ollie Good. (Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler)

Charles Duane "Bud" Cornelius, 76, Archie, died Feb. 25, 2008, at home. He was born March 5, 1931, in Kansas City, the son of Fred Oliver and Frances Nettie (Reeves) Cornelius. Sept. 11, 1982, he married Beverly Ann Reed. Mr. Cornelius was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He lived in Kansas City before moving to Archie. He was a past member of the Butler Masonic Lodge. He worked as a mechanic for Deems Farm Equipment in Butler and for Stanley Equipment in Stanley, Kan., before retiring in 1994. He enjoyed ranching, farming, fishing, camping and watching his grandkids play sports. He especially enjoyed his daily trips to his son's farm to feed and check the cows. Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Casey Cornelius; and a granddaughter, Mindy McDonnell. Surviving are his wife, Beverly, of the home; a daughter, Randalyn McDonnell and husband, Dean, Archie; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Cornelius, Springfield; his sons, Cary Cornelius and wife, Tammara, Archie, and Kelly Cornelius and wife, Mary, Raymore; his extended family, Drenda Enos, Adrian, Dennis Laughlin and wife, Linda, Archie, Mitchell Laughlin and wife, Robbie, Springfield; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers were Erin Smalley, Jennifer Sutton, Ross Cornelius, Kelsey Cornelius and Lindsey Cornelius. Casket bearers were Kristopher Cornelius, Matt Enos, Devon Enos, Clint Laughlin, Bret Enos and Dereck McCullough. Services were Feb. 28 at the Atkinson Chapel, Archie. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Archie.

CARD OF THANKS - Mrs. C. Cothrien and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Cothrien desires, through the Adrian Journal, to express their heartfelt thanks for the many acts of kindness and sympathy extended by friends during the late illness and death of their husband and son C. Cothrien. They will ever hold in grateful remembrance such dear friends. C. Cothrien departed this life at 4:45 o'clock a.m., Dec. 29th, 1894 pneumonia fever, at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. D. Cothrien Burdett Mo. Deceased was 27 years, 9 months and 21 days old. Rev. Lewis preached the funeral sermon at the Baptist church after which the remains were laid to rest in the Burdett Cemetery by the K. of P. and M.W.A. lodges of which he was a member. Deceased leaves a wife and child, mother, father, brother and two sisters with many relatives and friends to mourn his death and while we would say to you his loved ones that are left here below, dear one be reconciled to your loss, as it is his gain. He has left you here below, he is waiting you in his heavenly home above. Deceased was a true devoted husband and father a dear son and brother and a kind and steadfast friend honored and loved by all who knew him. The sorrowing ones have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

OLD CITIZEN DEAD - Uncle Dan Cothrien died at his home in Burdett, Monday, after a long illness, aged 74 years. Uncle Dan was born in New York but came to this county in 1852, and for 55 years had been an honorable citizen and respected gentleman. No man in the community where he has lived all these years was more highly respected and none did more to aid his neighbors in their hour of need than he. Uncle Dan was relied upon by all in the time of need and he never proved untrue. For many years he had been an active member of the Burdett Baptist Church and he was always found ready to respond to the call of duty. Several years ago he lost his wife and two sons, this was a severe blow to him and he never full recovered from the shock. Two daughters, Mrs. Annie Axelson and Mrs. Thos. Rainey survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. Funeral services were held Tuesday and the body laid to rest in the Burdett cemetery. In the death of Daniel Cothrien, this community has lost a true friend and brother. No man will say ought against him.

COTHRIEN, Daniel Willard "Willie"

Died at his home in Burdett, at 10:40 o'clock p.m., Jan. 12th, 1895, Willie Cothrien, aged 19 years 3 months and 5 days. Deceased was born in Burdett. He died thinking that he left a mother to mourn his loss, but she had crossed the valley of death just two days before. He leaves a father, two sisters and many friends to mourn his loss. Willie was an active member of the Sunday school, doing all he could to get the boys to attend and study the Bible. Although he was not a member of any church, he did all in his power to make the good work go on. The last words that he said were: "I hope I can hear Rev. Culberson preach again." After the funeral services, which were conducted by Rev. Sage, the remains were laid to rest in the Burdett cemetery by the M. W. of A., of which he was a member, six of his most intimate friends acted as pall bearers. Willie had been afflicted but ten days, he bore his suffering with resignation and finally fell to sleep as peacefully as the sun sinks behind the hills at eventide. His life was a benediction and a blessing, he was one of those that had not lived in vain; but the world is better for his having lived in it. Rest in peace and rise in triumph thou saintly boy in Israel.

Died: Mrs. Cothrien, on the 6th inst. departed from this life to the better world; aged 78 years. Mrs. Cothrien was the mother of our well known citizen, Daniel Cothrien, who sorely mourns his loss. The funeral services were held at the Baptist church on Sunday after which the body was consigned to its last resting place in the Burdett cemetery.

Died at her home in Burdett, on Jan. 10th, 1895, Mary E. Cothrien, aged 52 years 3 months 4 days. Deceased was born in Penn., Oct. 6th, 1842. With her parents she moved to Lasalle county, Ill. At the age of 12; came to Bates County in 1865, and married Daniel Cothrien in 1866. They then began housekeeping one half mile south of where Burdett now stands. She was the mother of six children two of whom with the loving husband and father, survive. Sister Cothrien was a member of the Baptist church for five years during which time she lived a constant Christian life, which, as the years passed by grew into a shining example of loving faith in God and faith for the redemption of the sinners. She was one of the devout ones of earth, who are not only hearers but doers of the Word. Her light shone over the entire community, inspiring the Christian and drawing sinners to Jesus. The bereaved family has the sympathy of the whole community.

James Eldon Cox, age 85 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, November 10, 2008 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. He was born September 24, 1923 to James and Maude Elsie Burke Cox in Bates County, Missouri. Eldon is survived by his wife of 57 years, Velda Cox of Butler, Missouri; two sons, Alan Cox and wife Lynn and Doug Cox, all of Butler, Missouri; a daughter, Vicki Parabicoli and husband Richard of Upton, Massachusetts; seven grandchildren, Brian Cox and wife LeeAnn, Mark Cox and fiance` LeaAnn, Matthew Parabicoli, Ashley Cox, Lesley Cox, Jenna Parabicoli and Christa Parabicoli; and two great-grandsons, Wyatt and Eli. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Sharon Ann Coyan, 65, of Uniontown, Kan., died Thursday evening, April 19, 2007, at her home. She was born Aug. 5, 1941, in Fort Scott, Kan., the daughter of Glen Lavoyn and Mabel Maxine (Chamberlain) Dickey. She married Thomas Elwood Coyan Dec. 20, 1959, in Fort Scott. They later divorced after 19 years of marriage. She worked as a Certified Medical Assistant for many years, most recently for Presbyterian Village. Sharon is survived by her children, Thomas L. Coyan, and Timothy Lee Coyan, both of Uniontown, Nancy Durnal of Fort Scott, and Ginger Maxine Montgomery, of Mission, Kan.; a step-sister, Betty Ruddick; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. The Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct funeral services Tuesday, April 24, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with burial following at the Evergreen Cemetery Memorial Park.

Elbert C. Crabtree, 63, Adrian, died August 3 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Mo. He was born July 27, 1915 in Texas County, Mo. Elbert was the son of Horace and Lina Crabtree. Preceding him in death was his father, mother and two sisters. Elbert was converted to Christ several years ago and lived a dedicated Christian life. He was a member of the Adrian Assembly of God Church. He had been in poor health for several years but had always been patient and thoughtful of others. Left to mourn his death are two uncles, Roy and Harry Crabtree, a host of cousins and may friends. Elbert will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Services were held August 6 at the Atkinson-Dickey Chapel. Burial was in the Altona Cemetery.

Nancy Angeline Simpson, daughter of George and Sally Abnet Simpson was born March 12, 1879 near Summer, Kentucky. She was united in marriage to William Horace Crabtree and of this union 3 children were born, two daughters Jessie Marie and Ruby Iva Ree and one son, Elbert Curlie Crabtree. Her husband and two daughters preceded her in death, Mrs. Crabtree departed this life the morning of September 4, 1961 at the age of 82 years 5 months and 22 days. She is survived by her son, Elbert Crabtree, of the home and a host of relatives and friends. She was saved and joined the Baptist Church as a girl, in later years she fellowshipped with the Assembly of God Church and the Church of God people. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 6, 1961 at the Assembly of God Church. Burial was in the Altona Cemetery.

William Horace Crabtree, son of John and Jane Crabtree, was born at Gerster, St. Clair county, Missouri, July 18, 1888 and departed this life April 30, 1942. His age was 53 years, 9 months and 11 days. He was united in marriage to Lina Simpson August 2, 1911. To this union three children were born, two of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and one son, Elbert Burlee, of the home. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Alice Ashby, of Dayton, Mo.; and five brothers: Thomas Crabtree, Arrowell, Mo., Archie Crabtree, Jackson, Calif.; Drew and Harry Crabtree, Holden, Mo. He was a faithful and loving husband and father. He was united with the Church of God at Aaron, Mo. In 1934, and lived in that faith until his death. Funeral services were held from the Altona Baptist church Saturday afternoon, May 2. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery with Creath & Six in charge.

Frank Crews, 76, Sheldon, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at Freeman Health System West, Joplin, Mo., following a two-year illness. He was born April 18 1931, in Pittsburg, Kan., to Frank Hart Crews and Cordia Florence Downs Crews. He married Loretta Faye Helm on Nov. 22, 1952, in Eureka Springs, Ark., and she survives of the home. Frank grew up in Nevada and attended Nevada schools. He joined the National Guard at the age of 15 where he spent two years until joining the U.S. Army. He served in the Army for two years and was stationed in Korea before returning home in September 1952. He was awarded an honorary high school diploma in 2001 from Nevada High School by the U.S. Government Program for veterans. Following the service, he lived and worked in Nevada all of his life. He was manager of Stocker's Truck Stop in Nevada for 16 years. He worked for the Nevada Police Department for 10 years

George Crooks, prominent resident of the Virginia community, died at the Research hospital in Kansas City Sunday night, April 3, following an extended illness. The remains were brought to this city. Mr. Crooks was born near Chicago on February 2, 1860. The Crooks family came to Bates County from Illinois in 1866 and located in Charlotte township where the deceased had since made his home. He was one of the oldest residents of Bates County.

Charlotte Flashes - Mrs. J. H. Park received a telegram Monday morning that her brother, James R. Crooks, had died the 15th of this month at his home in Santa Cruz., Calif., and that his daughter Mrs. Alice Heckadon, who went there to take care of him in his sickness, had left there Sunday with his remains. She expects to reach Butler, Mo. in time for funeral and burial in the Howell Cemetery Thursday. Another one of Charlotte's old settlers has answered the final role call. He was in his 68th year.

Virginia Items - Uncle Peter Crooks died last Wednesday and was buried Thursday at the Howell cemetery. Mr. Crooks was born in Scotland about eighty years ago. In his younger days he spent several years as a sailor and got to see much of this big world. He had lived on the same farm in Charlotte township for more than thirty years an always had the confidence and respect of all who knew him. His wife, two sons and two daughters survive him.

Peter Crooks Jr. died, at his grandfather's, Judge Alexander Owens, in this city, on Dakota street on the 16th day of December, 1880. Peter Crooks, son of Peter Crooks, Esq., of Charlotte township, this county. The subject of this brief sketch was born in Grundy county Illinois, Sept. 7th, 1863, he was then at his death a little past 17 years of age. Until a few weeks ago he was in ordinary health when he commenced complaining of rheumatism in his limbs. He was thought to be better, and he came to town some eight or nine days prior to his death from medical treatment, but the disease had concentrated in his brain and defied medical skill and soon terminated his young and hopeful life. Peter was a healthy and promising young man. He seemed to be the special favorite of his family and friends, and was regarded by those who knew him best as a good boy, and the esteem he was held in by neighbors and citizens generally was exhibited on the day of his demise. A large crowd assembled at his father's house to listen to a funeral sermon. A large procession followed his remains to the cemetery where all that was mortal of him was deposited in the grave to rest until the resurrection morn.

Again the death angel has visited our vicinity making desolate another home, calling from our midst one who by her many virtues and beauteous character numbered among her acquaintances no enemies but very many friends. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.

Mary is survived by her cousins, Robert Crouch Sr. and wife Arvilla of St. Joseph, Missouri, Robert Crouch Jr. of Chicago, Illinois, Sharon Martin of Hayward, California and Carolyn Brady of St. Joseph, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Crouch.

Uncle Barney Cruse died at the home of his son Norman in Grand River Township, Monday morning, February 1st, 1915; aged 79 years, 3 months and 1 day. Barney Cruse was born in Union county, Illinois, November 1st, 1835. Mr. Cruse came to Bates county, Missouri, about forty-three years ago and had since resided here. He was a member of the Progressive Dunkard Church and lived a consistent Christian life. He was a good citizen and an accommodating neighbor. Mr. Cruse leaves a widow and three children. The children are Mrs. John Howard, of Nevada; Norman and Charles Cruse, of near Adrian. Funeral services for Mr. Cruise were held from the home of his son Norman Tuesday afternoon. Burial was in the Altona cemetery.

Grandma Cruse had lived in this county many years and was a lovable lady and a good neighbor. Grandma has been in very feeble health for many months. Miss Minnie Cruse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Cruse, died at the home of her parents, four miles northeast of Adrian, Sunday, August 3rd, 1913, after a lingering illness of a complication of ailments. Miss Cruse was a quiet and amiable young lady and her demise will be a great blow to her aged parents. Funeral services were held Monday, after which the body was laid to rest in the Altona cemetery. The aged parents have the sympathy of their friends in this great bereavement.

Minnie Florence Stephenson, daughter of John and Drusilla Stephenson was born near Haynesville, Clay County, Mo., June 8, 1865. She came to Bates County in October, 1872, the family residing near Hudson, Mo. In 1881 they moved to the farm near Round Prairie church where she was married to Charles Culver, Dec. 27, 1888. With her husband she went to Nevada where they resided for a year, after which they moved to the present home on Round Prairie, where she lived the remaining years of her earthly life, passing to the life beyond Easter morning, being 62 years and 10 months of age. In young womanhood she was converted to Christ under the ministry of Rev. Israel Thompkins, at Round Prairie Baptist Church, uniting with the M.E. Church, South, at Hook's Chapel, being a member of the church until its disorganization a few years ago, when her membership was removed to the same church at Appleton City. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, two sons, Sylvester and Ralph Culver, of Appleton City; two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Wheaton, Butler, MO, and Mrs. Lafe Wilson, Rich Hill; and Charles Knox, of Parsons, Kansas, to whom she became a mother in his early life. Three children, Ora, Ethel and an infant son preceded her in death. There also remain nine grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers, besides other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Round Prairie Church, and interment was made in the cemetery there. -- R.R. Kenney, funeral director.

Marvin A. Cummings, 59, Ozark, died Tuesday at Table Rock Lake, Mo. He was born Sept. 23, 1946, in Nevada, Mo., the son of Allen Lox and Elsie Lorraine Strange Cummings. Marvin grew up in Nevada and after graduating from high school in 1964, he attended Southern Missouri State University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. After graduation he became a claims adjuster for State Farm Insurance and in 1973, founded Oak Grove Construction. He enjoyed a long successful career in construction and had recently sold the company to concentrate on his real estate investments and to take time to further enjoy his many friends and hobbies. Marvin was a man with a huge heart and was always willing to work, volunteer and lend financial support to worthy causes. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Contractors Association, Sertoina Club and Elks Lodge No. 409. He was an active volunteer and supporter of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program and the Women in Need program. Marvin was an avid outdoorsman, sportsman and animal lover, especially enoyed horses and hunting dogs. He was fortunate enough to have made numerous hunting and fishing trips all over North, South and Central America. He supported many conservation groups and was a 30 year sponsor of Ducks Unlimited and past president of the Springfield Rod and Gun Club. He always proclaimed that the great outdoors was his church. He is survived by his daughter, Dana and husband Cody Quisenberry, and their daughter, Cooper Elle, Fort Worth, Texas; sister, Janice and husband Gary Vaughn, Beaumont, Texas; a niece, Kelly and husband Tony Niles, Houston, Texas; a nephew, Matt Vaughn and wife Samantha, Clever, Mo.; and an aunt, Louise Snyder, Butler, Mo. Marvin M. Cumpton, 98, passed away June 21, 2009 at Medicalodge in Butler, Mo. Marvin was born December 3, 1910 to William and Rosa Cumpton in Spruce, Mo. He married Pauline C. Hess on December 24, 1935 in Butler. They had two children, James M. Cumpton and David E. Cumpton. Marvin spent his life in the oil business. He initially worked for Skelly Service Station in Butler, and later became proprietor of the station. In 1954 Marvin was promoted to District Salesman for Skelly and was transferred to Springfield, Mo. in 1956 as the District Sales Manager. He and Pauline also operated the Inn Hotel in Butler through the mid 1950's. In 1960, he transferred to Kansas City, Mo., into Real Estate Procurement for Skelly and remained in this department until his retirement at age 65. Marvin resided in Prairie Village and Overland Park, Kan., from 1960 to 2005 when he moved back to Butler. Some of his hobbies after retirement included golf and bowling, which he continued to participate in into his 90's. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife Pauline on Dec. 19, 1981, brothers John, Everett, George, sister Wilma, and daughter-in-law Sherry Cumpton. He is survived by son James Cumpton and wife Micki, son David Cumpton, brothers Arthur and Quentin, sister Gladys Linard, four granddaughters, and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Mullinax Funeral Home of Butler. A graveside service will be at Oak Hill Cemetery of Butler.
