Arthur Radford, the oldest son of O. J. Radford, who formerly lived in Spruce, died Sept. 28 in the City Hospital in Kansas City with typhoid fever. The remains were laid to rest in the Radford cemetery Sunday.

Beverly Jean Radford, age 77 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, September 29, 2008 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born September 8, 1931 to Pascal Carter and Valda Fern Comstock Padgett in Wallace, Nebraska. Beverly is survived by her daughter, Terry Lee Griffin and husband Alvin of Butler, Missouri; two brothers, Tom Padgett and wife Norma of Pacific, Washington and Kink Padgett and wife Diane of Miami, Florida; three sisters, Roma Terry and husband Alvy of Valentine, Nebraska, Connie Padgett of McCook, Nebraska and Julie Young of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; four grandchildren, Jeff Gregory and wife Terra, Scott Gregory, Justin Griffin and wife Stacy and Chris Griffin and wife Sara; six great-grandchildren; other relatives and her Brookside friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

Bert Radford Dead - Charles Herbert Radford died at his home near Spruce on Saturday morning, June 12th, 1915, at 1:30 o'clock, after an illness of several weeks from typhoid fever. Mr. Radford was about 44 years old and leaves a wife and two children, an aged father and mother, two brothers and two sisters to mourn his death. Bert Radford as he was familiarly known was one of the best-loved men in eastern Bates. He had for many years been a devoted member of the church and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. By his industry and good judgment he had made one of the nicest homes in Bates county and was prepared with his good wife and tow children to enjoy life. But at a time when all seemed brightest in life, the silent messenger entered the home and the loving husband and indulgent father is no more. Funeral services were conducted from the late home Sunday afternoon and interment was made in the Radford cemetery. The unusually large attendance was evidence of the esteem in which the deceased was held.

Mr. Davis Radford had been in failing health since early spring, taking a turn for the worse Monday, however his condition was not thought to be critical until Friday when neighbors, who were hastily summoned to his bedside arrived to find him already gone. "Uncle Davis" as he was known to the community, was 79 years of age at the time of his death. A pioneer citizen of Bates county, the old Radford homestead being only a short distance from the farm where he lived for many years with the Asa Radford family. His life was an exemplary one of unselfish devotion to his aged father and mother, and later to his sister and his nephews and nieces who claimed his affection. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at Spruce, Saturday afternoon. Burial followed at the Radford cemetery that was a part of the farm where Mr. Radford lived for many years. Mr. Radford is survived by a sister, Mrs. Robert Snodgrass, of the Spruce community, a second sister in California, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Death of Mrs. John Radford -- Joahanna S. Hopkins was born at Windsor, Mo., June 19, 1847, died at her home in Johnstown, February 16, 1936, at the age of 88 years. She was married to John R. Radford, October 23, 1867, who preceded her in death December 28, 1915. They moved to Johnstown November 1884 and lived in the same home for 52 years. Five children were born to them. They are: Eliza Snodgrass, Adrain; Nell Oneal, Kansas City; Lee, Rob and Arlie all of the home. They were at her bedside when the end came. Besides her children she leaves one brother, Henry Hopkins of Kansas City. Fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She united with the Methodist church when seventeen years of age and was faithful in that cause until death. She was laid to rest in the Johnstown cemetery beside her husband Tuesday, February 18. The flower girls were four of her granddaughters -- Miss Loma Oneal, Mrs. C. L. Maupin, Mrs. Vernie Snodgrass and Mrs. Harry Hannah. Grandsons and great-grandsons were pallbearers -- Coleman Snodgrass, Wilber Snodgrass, Dewitt Snodgrass, Curtis Radford and Harry Hannah.

LeRoy "Frog" Rainey, of Walker, Mo., the son of Roy Rainey and Mary Rainey (Rose), was born May 28, 1946, in Nevada, Mo., and passed away on Sept. 23, 2006, at his home at 60 years of age. He was united in marriage to Jessie Gann on July 8, 1976, in Miami, Okla. He graduated from Walker High School. LeRoy was a truck driver for more than 45 years and made many friends while driving his Peterbilt around the area. He drove for Metz Grain and even Murphy Farms for a bit, Frog loved to fish and hunt and always enjoyed spending time, with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a big family man and will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Jessie, of the home; one son Billy Don Rainey and his wife Lisa; daughter, Sondra Lynn Hampton and her husband Mike; a brother, William Dale Rainey and his wife Shirley Rainey; five grandchildren, Kelsie Ast, Trenton Ast, Jessica Hampton, Hannah Rainey and Logyn Rainey. He was preceded by his parents and one brother, Dennis Wayne Rainey. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the Pentecostal Assembly Church. Burial will follow in Moore Cemetery.

Died, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chapman, July 2nd, 1898, John J. Ramey, aged 57 years, 3 months and 11 days. Deceased was born in Kentucky March 21st, 1841, and came to Missouri in 1879, locating in Bates county. His life here has always been honorable and upright in all his dealings. In 1887 he made a profession of religion and united with the U. B. church, and has since lived a consistent Christian life, enjoying the respect and esteem of all who knew him. For five years he had been a constant sufferer, but he bore his sufferings with unusual fortitude. Six children survive to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father, and in this their affliction they have the sympathy of the community. Funeral services were held from the Deer Creek chapel on Sunday. The large number who attended the services attested the high esteem in which deceased was held by his neighbors and friends. Undertaker Kidwell had charge of the funeral arrangements.

William Roger "Bill" Ramsell, 66, Schell City, the son of William Howard and Jessie Lee (Mace) Ramsell, was born Sept. 30, 1942, in Liberty, and passed from this life on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at the Centerpoint Hospital"– Kansas City. Bill retired from Carter Waters after 27-years of service. During that time he was a member of Laborers 663 and Teamsters 541. Bill and his wife, Pat, were married March. 1, 1968, in Miami, OK, and retired to the Schell City area in 1998. In his early years, Bill was an avid lover of dirt track racing. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved being in the woods hunting for mushrooms. In the past several years he never missed a NASCAR race. He was a member of the Advent Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife of 40-years, Patricia Ramsell, of the home in Schell City; two sons, Garry Ramsell and family, Paola, KS, and William "Billy" Ramsell, Schell City; one daughter, Dena Stoneking and family, Buckner; one sister, Karen Ramsell, Liberty; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and many friends that will miss him greatly. Aside from his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra Ramsell. Graveside services with interment were held Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City. Bates County Pioneer Dead - Eli Raney, one of Bates county's pioneer citizens, and for 27 years a resident of Sprague, died suddenly at his home Wednesday night about 9 o'clock. Mr. Raney had been in his usual good health and was preparing to retire. As he approached his bed he fell to the floor dead. Deceased was aged 74 years and 6 months. He was a jeweler by trade and for the past 27 years has conducted a little shop at Sprague. He is survived by two sons, viz: J. H. Raney, the Frisco agent at Sprague and D. L. Raney, of Dallas, Texas.

Elizabeth Criglar was born Feb. 2, 1864, Pettis County, Sedalia, Mo., to Thomas Lewis Criglar and Lucy Karen Criglar. As a small child she came with her parents to Bates county. On March 10, 1886, she was married to Joseph Lee. To this unin were born three sons, one dying as a small boy in 1889. On December 12, 1899, her husband passed away. She then moved to Sprague with two small sons and later married James H. Raney whom she marired (sic) in her home on June 8, 1902, by the Rev. R. A. Blalock. Mr. Rane preceded her in death May 2, 1938. Mrs. Raney was a member of the Sprague Christian church and was active in church work all her life. As well as to her nephews and nieces, she was also Aunt Lizzie to her younger friends in the community. Mrs. Raney passed away in her sleep at her home in Sprague, Wednesday morning, December 23, 1953, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 21 days. She is survived by two sons: Joseph F. Lee, Enid, Okla., John C. Lee, Van Nuys, Calif.; one grand-daughter, Joan Lee Smith of Van Nuys, Calif.; two daughters-in-law, eight step-grandchildren, the family of her stepdaughter, Anna Raney Anderson of Hume, Mo., who passed away last week. Surviving also are four sisters, Mrs. Alice Williamson, Pittsburg, Calif.; Mrs. R. L. Swearingen, Pueblo, Colo.; Mrs. B. M. Hieronymus, Pond Creek, Oklahoma, and Mrs. R. S. Ferguson, Rich Hill, Mo. Numerous nephews and nieces also survive. Services for Mrs. Raney were held Saturday. Burial in Green Lawn Cemetery.

James Raney, a pioneer citizens of Sprague, passed away at the home Monday night. Death resulted from heart trouble. He leaves his wife and several children. Mr. Raney was station agent for the Frisco when a depot was maintained at Sprague. After the service was discontinued at Sprague he was transferred to a Kansas town, where he remained until he was retired. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Christian Church in Sprague.

Raney of Sprague, died yesterday and was buried this afternoon in the Rider Cemetery near Fairview. Mrs. Raney was aged 75 years, 10 months, and 20 days; Booth and Baughan undertakers and funeral directors of this city were in charge of the final arrangements. Mr. Raney has our kindest sympathy in his bereavement.

Delano W. "Jack" Rapp, age 75 of Butler, Missouri, died Friday, December 5, 2008 at University of Kansas Medical Center. He was born September 22, 1933 in Prairie City, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl Rapp and Paula Leimer-Rapp, a sister Priscilla Rapp and his brothers, Norman Rapp and Victor Rapp. Jack is survived by his brothers, Dennis Rapp and Duwayne Rapp; his sisters, Bernice Mott, Ardyce Brecko and Marylyn Piepmeier; his daughter Jacque Hall and grandchildren, Brady and Ashley all of Carl Junction, Missouri; his son Jarrod Rapp, his wife Koreen and grandchildren, Korbin Gunnels, and Josi and Jayce Rapp all of Pollock, Missouri; and his son Jeffrey Rapp of Butler, Missouri. Jack graduated in 1951 from Prairie City High School and served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1953. He logged in thousands of miles, over the years, driving for Heiman's, Ours Oil Company, Jerry Chitty, Jack Kenney, Ron Gilkey and Carl Hull, to name a few. He liked playing cards and fishing for crappie, catfish and bluegill. He enjoyed quail hunting and spent many hours training his dogs Trixie, Duke and Rocky. Billy Dean Reed, age 79, of Adrian, Mo., was born March 25, 1928, the son of James William and Oma Berniece (Hurst) Reed. He passed from this life on Friday evening, Nov. 9, 2007, at his home in Adrian. Early in his life Dean, along with his family, moved to the Schell City area where he attended school and was one of the graduates of Schell City High School Class of 1947. After graduation, Dean, being an avid baseball player, played minor league ball for a time before trying out for the St. Louis Browns. After his baseball years he and his father operated Reed Truck Line. On July 14, 1951, Dean was united in marriage to Elsie Cordelia Wells in El Dorado Springs. The newlyweds made their home in Schell City then relocated to the Adrian area in 1960 making it their permanent home. Dean worked for 24 years for Allied Signal before retiring on Jan. 1, 1992. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and playing golf. He loved dancing and was a member of the Butler Square Dancing Association. One of his greatest pleasures was the time he spent watching his children and grandchildren at sporting events. Survivors include his wife Cordy of the home in Adrian; two sons, Michael Reed and his wife Paula and Billy Reed and his wife Robin, all of Adrian; two daughters Deborah Hill and her husband Dean of Butler, Mo., and Chrystal Mayfleld and her husband Terry of Adrian; two sisters, Beverly Cornelious and her husband Bud, and Janice Archer and her husband Bruce all of Archie, Mo.; seven grandchildren; Tina Eidson and her husband Richie; Randy Reed and his wife Heather, Kevin Hill and his wife Aspen; David Hill and his wife Samie; and Maycie, Kaleb, and Mikah Mayfield; four great-grandchildren, Baily and Gavin Reed; Brice Eidson and Oakleigh Hill; cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Larry Wayne Reed was born Oct. 25, 1945, in Nevada, the son of Albert and Ceraldine (Page) Reed. He passed away June 18, 2008, at Freeman West Hospital, in Joplin, at the age of 62. Larry was raised in Vernon County and graduated from Metz High School. Soon after graduation he attended auctionneering school. He had a great love for horse racing and auctioneering until his failing health. He also enjoyed animals. larry was a member of the Mezt Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his fiancee, Patsy Hamersley, in January 1992; his parents; and one niece, Judith Ann Cole. Larry is survived by his stepdaughter, Deanna Hines and her husband Larry, of Wentzville, Mo.; two grandchildren, Ashely Hines Molz and Shannon Hines and one great-granddaughter, Clara Hines, all of Wentzville, Mo.; two sisters, Mary Anne Adams, of Nevada, Patty Sue Cole, of Russellville, Ark.; one brother Tommy Reed and his wife Colleen, of Rich Hill, and several nieces and nephews. Services will held today, June 21, at Heuser Funeral Home, in Rich Hill. Interment will be at Berea Cemetery.

Micheal Lee Reed, the son of Virgil Reed and Ocia (Austin) Crowe, was born May 25, 1942 in Nevada, Mo. He passed away Aug. 22, at the Veterans Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., at 65 years of age. Micheal graduated high school from Adams City High School in Adams City, Colo., in 1962. He served honorably in the U.S Air Force for about four years. In his spare time Micheal loved to square dance. He was quite good and attended many square dancing functions in the area. He also was a clown for a number of years in California, where he entertained folks of all ages. Survivors of Micheal include; his mother, Ocia Crowe, of Nevada; two half brothers Robert Lee Reed and James Ray Reed of Clinton, Iowa; one half sister, Patty Ann of Clinton, Iowa, and one stepsister, Virginia Thurston, of Texas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Virgil Reed; two stepfathers, Frederick Ellis and Henry Crowe; and one sister, Shirley Reed. There are no services planned for Micheal at this time.

He was born in Sedalia, and with the exception of one year, had spent his entire life in Bates County. Mr. Reeves leaves his wife, Anna of the home and a brother, John E. Reeves of Kansas City, Mo. Funeral services were conducted from the Culver-Underwood Chapel Friday with burial in Adam Howell cemetery northwest of Butler.

Bernice "Me-Me" Reinke, 86, of the Virginia community, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003 at her home in rural Amoret, Mo. The funeral was Sept. 3 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler, Mo. Burial in Adam Howell Cemetery, Virginia, Memorial contributions may be given to the Virginia Mission Church. Mrs. Reinke was born April 6, 1917 in Bates County, Mo., to Gus and Lela Kershner Brunner. One of two children, she was a lifelong resident of Bates County. She attended grade school at Mt. Vernon. On April 29, 1936 she married David Reinke in Butler, Mo., and to this union two children were born. She oversaw the farm and was a homemaker all of her life. She supported and was active when health permitted in the Virginia Mission Church. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, especially red petunias, and her cats, Ralph, Pee-Wee and Thing-a-ma-jig. She unselfishly helped others and shared anything she had with them. When she was younger she liked to spend time at the creek with her son. She leaves a son, Richard Reinke and wife Freda, Amoret, Mo.; five grandchildren, Dixie Reinke, Beverly Warren and ex-husband Dusty, and Barbara Gayman and husband Rick, all of Butler; Dickie Reinke and wife Betty, Amoret; and Jerry Reinke, Joplin, Mo.; eight great-grandchildren; cousins and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988; a stillborn daughter; and a sister, Jean.

David John Reinke - David John Reinke, 76, of rural Amoret, Mo., died May 12, 1988 at his home. He was born Oct. 13, 1911 in Medicine Lodge, Kan., the son of John and Bertha Hauschen Reinke. Mr. Reinke was united in marriage to Bernice Bruner on April 29, 1936 and to this union one son was born. He worked in parts supervision for Ours Oil Company, Butler Auto Parts and Western Auto, all of Butler. He leaves his wife of the home; a son Richard and wife Freda of Amoret; two sisters, Freida Kennedy of Portland, Ore., and Vera Parker of Vancover, Wash.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Jean Bruner of LaCygne, Kan. The funeral was held May 15 at the Underwood-Steinbeck-Schowengerdt Chapel in Butler. Interment was in the Adam Howell Cemetery.

Ruth M. Remington, 90, Nevada, passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at the Barone Alzheimer's Care Center in Nevada. She was born July 15, 1917, in Chetopa, Kan., to Blucher Remington and Mary A. Bell Remington. Ruth was born and raised in rural Chetopa, Kan. She worked for Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kan., for 25 years. She retired in 1970, and moved to Nevada. Ruth worked as a volunteer at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. She was member of the United Methodist Church, Senior Citizens, and the S.O.S. Club. Survivors include locally one great-nephew, Andy Remington of Nevadaand numerous other nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Mary Lou was born and raised in Butler and graduated from Butler High School in 1942. In 1944 she was married to George Repp. They were married for 57 years until George passed away in 2001. In 1958 the bought a run down hardware store in Butler, MO and turned it into a successful business, Repp Hardware. The store stands today looking much as they left it when they retired in 1992. Mary Lou was active in the community until her health deteriorated. Her sons remember always being the ones at football practice with clean uniforms and a mother they could hear from the field. Mary Lou is survived by her two sons: Michael Repp (Carol) of Olathe, KS, and Mark Repp (Renda) of Minot, ND; one brother Tommy Miller of Lees Summit, MO; one nephew Thomas Miller and his wife Janice; and one niece Theresa Kirkpatrick and her husband Paul; five grandchildren: Derek, Lauren, Taylor, Wendy, and Brenda; six great-grandchildren: Emily, Bradley, Lilly, Tyler, Jayden, and Joey; one great-niece Sarah; and one great-nephew, Jacob.

Morris, July 6, 1926; aged 13 years, 5 months and 18 days. He spent his entire life in Grand River township, with the exception of a few months which he spent at his home Adrian. His father, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death a number of years ago. Those who are just to mourn his loss are his mother, two sisters, Eva of the home address, and Fanny of Marshall, Mo., also four brothers, Virgil of Aaron; Omar, Troy and Elvier of Adrian. Fannie, daughter of W. C. and Mary Rhodes, was born near Findlay, Illinois, February 2, 1901, and departed this life June 5, 1936 at the age of 35 years, 4 months and 3 days. Her father, two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death a number of years ago. Those who are left to mourn her passing are her mother, Mrs. Mary Rhodes, one sister Eve Rhodes, and four brothers, Troy and Elmer all of Kansas City; Virgie of Oklahoma, grandfather J. L. Morris of Adrian, …ity, and Omer of Windsor, Mo.; and other relatives and a host of friends. When but a child she moved with her parents to Bates county, where she spent her girlhood days and attended the public schools of this county. To know her was to love her for she possessed all the true and noble qualities of a Christian woman, she was ever ready to give the hand of help and word of comfort to a sad and lonely heart. Funeral services were held from the Altona Baptist Church last Wednesday afternoon. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six funeral service.

TROY RHODES DEAD - Troy Rhodes, 43 years old, died July 1, 1946, from injuries received in an automobile accident a few days previous. The accident causing his death was near Kansas City. Mr. Rhodes was born in Shelby county, Illinois, the son of William and Mary Rhodes. As a child, he came to Bates county with his parents and lived in Mingo township until 1926, when he moved to Kansas City. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Rhodes, and three brothers, Virgil Rhodes, Birmingham, Alabama; Omer Rhodes, of California and Elvier Rhodes of Kansas City, Missouri. Also surviving are five uncles and an aunt, Miss Ina Morris, Roscoe Morris, James L. Morris, N. D. Morris and Chas. Morris of the Adrian community and Dan Morris, St. Paul, L. Morris, N. D. Morris and Chas. Morris of the Adrian community and Dan Morris, St. Paul, Kansas. Funeral services were held from the Adrian Christian church, July 5. Burial was in the Altona cemetery.

Mr. W. C. Rhodes died at his home in Grand River township Sunday, March 31st, 1918 after a lingering illness of tuberculosis, aged 56 years, 8 months and 11 days. Mr. Rhodes was born in Anglaise county, Ohio, June 20th, 1861. He was united in marriage with Miss Mary Morris January 1st, 1895. To this union ten children were born, three preceded him in death, seven, with the wife survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. Mr. Rhodes moved to Bates county several years ago and located in the community where he died. He was a good citizen and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, burial was in the Altona cemetery. The community joins in sympathy for the mourning family.

Bernice M. Rice, 88, died Aug. 27, 2004, at the Willow Lane Care Center in Butler. She was born on July 1, 1916, in Darlington, Mo., the daughter of Thomas and Betty (Green) David. She was married to James Harrison Rice. She was the owner and operator of Mom's Diner in Kansas City, Mo. She also worked as a cook at the Spofford Home in Grandview, Mo. She moved to Rich Hill in 1992. She is survived by two daughters, Dolah Jean Edwards, Rich Hill, and Dixie Frazier, Kansas City, Kan.; three sons, James L. Rice, Kansas City, Kan., Jerry Rice, Lansing, Kan., and Johnnie Rice, Rich Hill; also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one daughter, Betty June Rice. Services were held at Heuser Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 30, 2004. Interment was in Rouse Cemetery in Darlington, Mo., Aug. 31, 2004.

Thomas W. Ricketts died at his home in Grand River township Saturday morning, November 29, 1941. His age was 83 years, 1 month and 16 days. Mr. Ricketts had been in failing health for some time. Thomas Warren, son of John and Lenora Ricketts, was born near Woodbine, Illinois, October 13, 1858. In 1865 he came to Missouri remaining until 1870, when he went to California. He returned to Missouri in 1884, locating in the Altona community. He was united in marriage with Miss Rosa Rory, of Gillespie, Illinois. To this union four children were born, one dying in infancy. The wife and three children survive. The children are, Mrs. Hazel Kernie, of Illinois; Mrs. Goldie Gibb, of Garden City, Mo., and Dean Ricketts, of the home. One grand-daughter also survives. Mr. Ricketts was an industrious and prosperous farmer. He was of a retiring disposition and a home man. He was held in high regard by his neighbors and friends. Funeral services were held from the Altona church Monday afternoon, December 1, 1941. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six funeral service.

Since living back in Butler, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Butler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence Stuart Rich; two sons: Thomas L. Rich and William K. Thomas Laurence Rich, 63, of East Haddam, CT, passed away July 5, 2005 at the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. His sisters, Patricia and Kerry were with him at the time of his death and throughout his battle with cancer. According to his wishes, Mr. Rich's body was donated for science and educational purposes. A memorial service was held July 16, 2005 at the Underwood-Steinbeck-Brandtonies Funeral Home in Butler.

Dean Thomas Ricketts was born on March 26, 1905 near Adrian, Missouri to Thomas Warren Ricketts and Rosa Tory Ricketts. He was born and lived in the same house all of his life. It originally was a two room house built before the Civil War and was used as a look-out point during the war. Dean loved to tell the stories about that period of time so a lot of history is lost with the death of Dean. He was a farmer most of his life. Also he bought and sold scrap iron of all kinds for many years. When people started restoring antique cars, truck and tractors, they would go to Dean Ricketts for parts. In March of 1988 Dean moved to a nursing home in Harrisonville, Missouri. He died at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Missouri on June 22, 1989 at the age of 84 years. Dean married Eula Fern Gunnels and she died in 1986. Also preceding him in death were his parents, one brother and one sister. Survivors include a sister, Goldie Gibb of Adrian, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, 1989 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri. Burial in the Altona Cemetery near Adrian.

Eula Fern Ricketts was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gunnels on July 12, 1905, and grew up in Amsterdam, Missouri, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church. After her marriage to Dean Ricketts, she became a part of the Adrian Community and was involved in various organizations. She was a member of the Altona Community Club, the Adrian Extension Club, the Rebekah Lodge and was a past member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Woodmen of America. She was also an active member of the First Christian Church of Adrian until her illness hindered her attendance. She passed away November 11, 1986 in the Bates County Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness of several years. She is survived by her husband, Dean, of the home, other relatives, and friends and neighbors who mourn her loss. Her faith in Christ as Lord was strong and her testimony ready and unashamed. Today she rests with her Lord in Heaven. May God bless the memory of her among us. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 15, 1986, at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri, with interment in the Altona Cemetery.

Linwood was stricken with influenza and pneumonia and his frail body was not able to long withstand the strain. The young parents have the sincere sympathy of the community in the loss of this little one to whom they were deeply attached. Funeral services were held Monday. Reuben Ricketts died at his home, three miles northeast of Altona, Tuesday night, May 31, aged 76 years, 8 months and 20 days. Mr. Ricketts had been critically ill for a long time and his death did not come as a surprise to his family and friends. Reuben Riggs, son of John and Lenora Ricketts, was born near Woodburn, Illinois, September 12, 1885. In 1863 his family moved to Missouri, locating near Sedalia. In 1871 they moved to California and in 1888, moved back to Missouri, locating on a farm in Grand River township, near where he died. On June 25, 1883, he was united In marriage with Miss Sarah Boyle at Gillispie, Illinois, who survives. To this union seven children were born, all of whom survive their father; they are : Warren W., Cecil and Mrs. Rose Hardman of Adrian; Mrs. Grace Blackmon, Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Ruby Blackmon of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Phyllis Hooper, of Hillsborough, Illinois, and Mrs. Blanche Wilkinson, of Kansas City, Mo. An adopted son, Zollas Ricketts, lives at New Orleans, La. Besides these he is survived by one brother, Thomas Ricketts, of Adrian, and two half brothers, James Little of Carlinville, Illinois, and Wright Little of Butte, Montana, and by fourteen grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Ricketts united with the Methodist Church at Altona, remaining a member of same until it disbanded some years ago. For nearly fifty years he lived in the community where he died; when he settled there it was in a way a new country with but few of the advantages we now have and the hardships were many and he endured them with a strong determination and died with the respect of those who had been neighbors to him most of these years. He was a good husband and a kind father to his children and they deeply mourn his passing. Funeral services for Mr. Ricketts were held Thursday afternoon, June 3, from the Altona Baptist church. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six.

Mrs. Sarah Ricketts passed away at her daughter's home in St. Louis, Mo., January 1, 1943. Sarah Ricketts, daughter of William and Margaret Boyle, was born July 7, 1867. She was united in marriage to Reuben R. Ricketts June 25, 1883, and came to Bates county near Altona to live for the remainder of her life, with the exception of this winter, which she spent with her daughter in St. Louis. Her husband preceded her in death in May, 1832. To this union was born seven children: Warren W. Ricketts and J. Cecil Ricketts of Adrian; Grace Blackmon of Cassville, Mo.; Phyllis Hooper and Ruby Blackmon of St. Louis, Mo.; Blanche Wilkinson of Kansas City, Kansas, and one adopted son Zollas Ricketts, of St. Louis; sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, one sister, Rosa Ricketts, of Adrian, and one brother, John Tarp, of Chicago. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Rose Hardman, last July. Mrs. Ricketts became a Christian in 1881 and for many years was active in the Altona Methodist church. She is remembered as a good neighbor. She was very good in sickness and one of the things she loved to do most in life was to help every one in any way she could. Funeral services for Mrs. Ricketts were held at the Adrian Methodist church Sunday afternoon. Burial was made in Altona cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

This community was shocked last Thursday evening when it was announced that J. P. Riley had dropped dead at his farm home near Merwin. Mr. Riley was born in Illinois, January 20, 1859, and at the time of his death was 69 years, 8 months, 7 days old. He came with his parents to Bates county, Mo., when a child and spent the rest of his life here. At the age of 21 years, he was united in marriage with Mary Van Horn. To this union eight children were born, his wife and four children preceded him in death. In 1916 he was united in marriage with Josephine Gutshall, who with four children survive him. The children are: Mrs. Fannie Gunn, of Adrian, Mo.; Walter Riley, Merwin, Mo.; Nathan Riley, Roginn, Canada, and Mrs. Pearl Wilkerson, Coaldale, Colorado. In early life Mr. Riley was converted and united with the Burdett Baptist church and remained in that faith until his death. Mr. Riley was a good citizen, a neighbor who was ever ready to render a service of kindness. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His life was a valuable contribution to the community where he spent all the active years. Funeral services for Mr. Riley were held from the Burdett Baptist church. Interment was made in the Burdett cemetery.

Burial was in Burdette Cemetery. Fern was an aunt of Ollie Underwood and my husband Clarence Gunn and cousin of Sylvia Kimble and Mable Gillis. Fern had been a resident of Medical Lodge of Butler for a number of years.

YOUNG MAN KILLED - John (sic) Riley, son of Jacob Riley of the Burdett neighborhood, was killed in the switch yards, in Kansas City last Thursday. Young Riley had been working in the yards for a year or more. Just how the fatal accident happened we have not learned. The body was brought to Adrian Saturday and buried in the Burdett cemetery. Riley was an honest and industrious young man and his father and sisters have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in this bereavement.

BURDETTE MAN FOUND DEAD; UNCLE OF CLARENCE GUNN - Walter E. Riley, 58, uncle of Mr. W. C. Gunn, of Adrian passed away, July 12. He was found dead in the car of Bob Silvers, which he had intended to drive to the Silver's home where his wife was waiting. Mrs. Riley found him after driving out to the road where the car had been parked next to the field in which Mr. Riley had been helping combine his oats with several other men. Apparently he died from a heart attack suffered just after entering the car. Mr. Riley was born August 1, 1891, in the Burdette community where he lived, and is survived by his wife, a sister, Mrs. Fannie Gunn of Butler, and a brother, Mr. Nate Gunn of Lisle, Mo. The Rev. George Ryder, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Gunn of Adrian, and Mrs. Fannie Gunn of Butler, attended the funeral services, held at Burdette.

Mrs. Riordan was born in Caldwell county, Missouri. She united with the Christian Church at the age of 16 and remained faithful until death. She was married in 1882. Funeral services were held in Altona Saturday, after which the body was laid to rest in the Altona cemetery. The bereaved husband has the sympathy of friends in this great bereavement.

Maurice Milan Ripley, age 87, resident of Moundville, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007 at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott. He was born Feb. 9, 1920 in Moundville, the son of Alvia Ripley and Tina Folk Ripley. He was a graduate of Bronaugh High School. Maurice married Catherine Harris on Aug. 9, 1941. He was a member of the Moundville United Methodist Church, the Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 187, Liberal, Mo.; Nevada York Rite, Fort Scott Scottish Rite, and the Mirza Shrine Temple, Pittsburg, Kan. He also was a member of the Vernon County Shrine Club, life member of the Sedalia Shrine Club, Order of Eastern Star, and a past member of the Bronaugh School Board. Maurice was a prominent lifetime farmer and stockman in the Moundville area. He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel at the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Survivors include his wife, Catherine, of the home; one daughter, Linda Eckhoff and husband Olen, Lamont, Mo.; three grandsons, Lewis Milan Eckhoff, Olen Christopher Eckhoff, and Daniel Lee Eckhoff two great-grandchildren, Brandon Eckhoff and Hailey Eckhoff; two nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clinton Ripley; and two sisters, Eleanor Whitworth and Gladys Brock. Ed Post will conduct graveside services Tuesday in the Deerfield Cemetery.

NATHAN RITCHIE DEAD - Nathan Ritchie died in Kansas City Friday. The body was brought to Adrian Saturday and buried in the cemetery at Altona. He was raised in Grand River township; but left here some years ago, since which time he has resided in Kansas City.

Mary Elizabeth Ritchey, daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Ritchey, and fourth child in a family of six children, was born at Uniontown, Belmont County, Ohio, October 3, 1853 and died in her home in Altona, on June 30, 1931, at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 27 days. Miss Ritchey came to Missouri April 15, 1866, and settled near Altona on a farm known as the William Crawford farm. Since the above date Miss Ritchie resided continuously in or near Altona. Miss Ritchie united with the Methodist Church of Altona about the year 1900, and was a loyal worker in her church as long as her strength permitted her to labor actively in the tasks of the kingdom. Her sorrow was that she was so long physically unable to go to the house of God. Mary E. Ritchie is survived by one brother, Seth Ritchey, of Loma Colorado. Three brothers and one sister departed this life before her call. On the second of December last Sister Ritchey suffered a paralytic stroke and was confined to her bed until her release on the afternoon of June 30. The day before her death she became unconscious probably as a result of a second paralytic stroke. During her illness she was cared for by her brother Seth Ritchey. She was a faithful friend, a sincere Christian, and a neighbor who never failed anyone in time of need. Funeral services for Miss Ritchie were held Thursday morning from the Altona Baptist church. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six funeral directors.

Alva Thomas Roach, the eldest son of the late Thomas Roach and Elizabeth Bagby was born near Burdett February 16, 1898 and passed away August 5, 1964. He spent his entire lifetime in the Burdette community. He was an active farmer until a prolonged illness which caused his death. He is survived by a brother, Ray Roach of Kansas City and a nephew Ray Roach Jr. of Kansas City. Funeral services were held Friday, August 7, 1964 at the Six Chapel. Burial was in the Burdette Cemetery.

Blanche, the sixteen year old daughter of Thomas H. Roach, died at the home of her father, near Burdett, Monday, April 28th. Funeral was held Tuesday, April 29th. Interment was made in the Burdett cemetery. The father has the sympathy of all in his great loss.

David Roach died at his home in Drexel, Mo., Sunday, July 27, 1924, after a lingering illness. Mr. Roach was reared near Burdett, Bates County, and spent many years of his life there. In recent years he had made his home in Drexel. Funeral services for Mr. Roach were held Monday. Burial was made in the Burdett cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas Roach died at her home near Burdett, Sunday, December 10th, 1911, after a brief illness of pneumonia fever, aged 37 years, 10 months and 20 days. Lizzie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Bagby, was born in Bates county, January 15th, 1874 and spent all her life near the place of her birth. She was united in marriage with Thomas Roach seventeen years ago, to this union four children were born, one daughter and three sons. These with her husband survive to mourn the loss of a faithful wife and loving mother. In early life Mrs. Roach united with the Burdett Baptist Church and died in that faith. Funeral services were held from the Burdett Church Tuesday afternoon. Burial in Burdette cemetery.

James M. Roach died at the Memorial hospital, Thursday, June 17, 1937. Mr. Roach underwent an operation several weeks ago and remained in the hospital until his death. His age was 33 years, 1 month and 1 day. James Maurice Roach, son of Thomas and Lizzie Roach, was born in East Boone township, May 16, 1904. He grew to manhood in his community, living in the community of Burdett until a few years ago when he moved to Adrian. He was never married. James' father, mother and one sister preceded him in death. He is survived by two brothers, Alva T. Roach of Adrian, and Ray Roach of Kansas City. Besides these brothers he is survived by a step-mother, Mrs. Betty Roach of Adrian. Funeral services for Mr. Roach were held from the Burdett Baptist church, Saturday morning, June 19. Interment was made in the Burdett cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Selah May Roach, daughter of James Humphrey and Edna Estella Wilson was born near Altona, Missouri April 19, 1874 and passed away March 19, 1962 at the Pine Tree Rest Home at the age of 87 years and 11 months. She was united in marriage to David Roach December 24, 1894. To this union one son was born, which died in infancy. She was preceded in death by her husband on 1924 also preceding her were 5 sisters and one brother. She leaves to mourn her passing, one brother, Albert Humphrey Wilson of Rocky Ford, Colorado and a number of nieces and nephews. She spent most of her life around Drexel, Missouri. Funeral services were held at the Six Chapel March 22, 1962. Burial was in the Burdette Cemetery.

Nadine Estelle Robbins, 72, Nevada, Mo., died Thursday, July 19, 2007, at Christian Health Care in Nevada, Mo. She was born Dec. 4, 1934, in Joplin, Mo., to Louie R. Owens and Dorothy A. Griggs Owens. Nadine grew up in the Nevada, Springfield and Joplin, Mo., areas. She lived the past six-in-a-half years in Nevada. She was a Baptist and a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She deeply touched everyone who knew her. Survivors include six daughters, Helen Hudson and her husband John, Kansas City, Mo., Monalisa Robb and Theresa Wallace and her husband Carl, both of Melbourne, Fla., Sheryll Evans and her husband Doug, Colorado Springs, Colo., Charlotte Spolar and her husband George, Gladstone, Mo., and Judy Robb, Milo, Mo.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; one sister, Rosetta Nichols and her husband Lester, Nevada, Mo.; three brothers, Sanford Owens, Forrest Owens and George Owens, all of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, James Robb; and one brother, Don Owens. Graveside services will he held Monday July 23, at Newton Burial Park in Nevada. Heather Michelle Robinson, age 34, was born Jan. 2, 1973, in Nevada, Mo., and passed from this life on Sunday, July 8, 2007, at her grandmother's home in Nevada, after a long battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Debra Sue (Loyd) Keely and Robert Allen Goodman. She spent nearly all of her life in Schell City, Mo., graduating with the class of 1991. She attended Cottey College for a short time, then on June 7, 1992, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Michael Lee Robinson. To their union one daughter was born. Heather was a member of the Schell City Christian Church. She always enjoyed working with crafts, and loved her dogs and cats. Survivors include her husband and daughter, Mike and Michelle of the home in Scheil City; her parents, Debra and Dean Keely and his son of Granbury, Texas, and Robert and Valerie Goodman and their two daughters of Kearney, Mo.; her brother, Jared Goodman and his wife Christy and their children, Cayla, Logan, Brice, and Jackson of Schell City; her grandparents, Leva Loyd and Rex Goodman both of Nevada, and Bill and Sue Burk of Kansas City, Mo.; aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. Heather was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Fred Loyd; grandmothers, Fern Goodman and Louise Goodman and her beloved stepfather, Steven Giangreco. Funeral services were Wednesday, July 11, at the Schell City Christian Church in Schell City. Interment was in the Green Mound Cemetery in Harwood, Mo.

Violet Marie Rodgers, 89, of Mena, Arkansas died Saturday, December 27, 2003, in Mena. She was born January 11, 1914, in Amsterdam, Missouri. She was a nurse and a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and the Yahweh New Covenant Assembly at Kingdom City, Missouri. Graveside service was held Wednesday at Mulberry Cemetery in Amoret, Missouri under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, a son, 11 grandchildren, 12, great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Hubert A. Rogers, 63, Horton, Mo., passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo. He was born Aug. 26, 1943, in Emporia, Kan., to Reber Austin Rogers and Beatrice Bernice Schellenger Rogers. He and Nancy L. Milford were married on July 7, 1968, in Nevada, Mo. She survives of the home. Hubert grew up and went to school in Lebo, Kan. He was self employed nearly all his life. He operated a farm near Moundville for 15 years, lived west of Nevada for 15 years and lived in Horton for the past five years. He operated heavy equipment locally. Hubert was a member of the Friendship Full Gospel Church in Butler, Mo. Survivors in addition to his wife Nancy, include two daughters, Lori Black and her husband Kevin, Nevada, Tammy Conley and Robert Warren, Freeman, Mo.; one son, Harold "Andy" Rogers and his wife, Danita VanGilder, Lamar, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, Nathan, Erika, Austin, Candrah, Luke, Amber, Carlee, Dylan, Slater, Jerri, and Anthony; two sisters, Lois Kennedy, Butler, and Carol Richards, Lee's Summit, Mo.; two brothers, Paul Rogers, Butler, and Dave Rogers, Rich Hill, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 25, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Balltown Cemetery, Horton.

Weldon B. "Buck" Rogers, 87, Humansville, Mo., died Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at Citizens Memorial Hospital, Bolivar, Mo. Weldon was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Vernon County, Mo., to Delbert and Cora (Crum) Rogers. He lived in Vernon County, until moving to Kansas City in the early 1940s. He Married Patricia Journey Dec. 26, 1942, in Carthage, Mo. He and his wife, Patricia, lived in Kansas City and then Independence, Mo., until 1976. Weldon owned an auto repair business in Independence throughout the 1950s, '60s and early '70s. He was a member of the Independence Masonic Lodge No. 76, the Scottish Rite of Kansas City and Ararat Temple of the Shriners. Weldon was an active participant in all levels of the Masonic Temple and had many close friends through those organizations. Weldon and Patricia lived in a variety of locals until moving to Humansville in 1989 and lived the remainder of his life there. Weldon enjoyed nature, hunting, fishing, bird-watching and anything outdoors. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He always enjoyed family gatherings and was devoted to his family. Survivors include, his wife Patricia, of the home; three children, Cheryl Molinaro, Estero, Fla., Carolyn Romondo, Olathe, Kan., and Sandra DePompa, Davie, Fla; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ivan Rogers, Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Calvin Rogers, Tucson, Ariz.; five sisters Emma Burcham, Lee's Summit, Mo., Dene Rogers Belton, Mo., Betty Rogers, Anderson, Mo., Beverly Rogers, Belton, Mo., and Madelyn Rogers, Las Vegas, Nev.; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 16, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow at Moore Cemetery in Nevada.

He came to Bates county from German 25 years ago. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss. Thus one by one the old pioneers drop away.

Zelda Urene Romine, age 84 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, October 26, 2008. She was born March 14, 1924 to Clarence Alvin and Lucy Zelda Manning Payne in Trenton, Utah. Zelda is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Cattaneo of Butler, Missouri; three sisters, Velma Millet and husband Leon of Utah and Norma Payne and LuDean Payne, both of Nevada; two granddaughters, Amy Smoke of Alexandria, Virginia and Stacie Maldonado and husband Freddy of Tampa, Florida; three great-grandchildren, Justen Maldonado, Alyssa Maldonado and Shaina Maldonado. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Valdon and Gerald Payne; two infant brothers; and an infant sister. Graveside services will be Tuesday, October 28 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Missouri.

Maye Rosamond, 88, Deerfield, Mo., passed away at her home on Aug. 11, 2006. She was born June 10, 1918, in Liberal, Kan., to James Emerson McGriff and Aletha Dykes McGriff. Maye grew up in the Jane, Mo., area south of Joplin. She worked at an ammunitions plant in St. Louis during World War II, making. 50 caliber machine gun shells. Most of her working life, she worked as a waitress. She worked at the Conner Hotel in Joplin for a number of years and for Bob Moore's Restaurant in Nevada for many years. Maye has lived in the Deerfield areas for the past 40 years. Survivors include two sons, Lynn Rosamond, Deerfield, Mo., Alvin T. Rosamond, the state of Tennessee; one daughter Jeannie Johnson, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; five grandchildren,; and two brothers, Jim McGriff and Don McGriff, both of Osceola, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and two brothers. Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 14, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, Mo. Interment will follow in Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield.

Pansy Imogene Rose, 81, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at Barone Alzheimer's Care Center in Nevada, following an illness of several months. She was born on Dec. 10, 1924, in Overton, Mo., to Herman Henry Kosfeld and Altha Jane Rentschler Kosfeld. Pansy was born and reared in Boonville, Mo., and spent her youth there. She came to Vernon County as a young adult and spent the rest of her life here. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Nevada, Mo. Survivors include two sons, Gary Rose, Nevada, and Timothy Rose, Springfield, Mo.; two daughters, Donna Kimberlin and Rebekah Brown, both of Springfield; three granddaughters; four grandsons; one great-granddaughter; three great-grandsons; one brother, Samuel Kosfeld, Boonville; five sisters, Mary Ann Fenten, Brookie McDowell, Anneta Hansett, Dottie Gerhardt, all of Boonville, and Carolyn Sue Berry, Spring Valley, Calif.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant daughters; one sister; and one brother. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 18, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Antioch Cemetery, Vernon County, Mo.

Rachel Mersylla Rotert, daughter of Julius and Anna (Matheny) Hamric, was born June 1, 1912 in Braxton County, West Virginia. She departed this life November 29, 2007 at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, Missouri. Mersylla lived in the Montrose, Missouri area all of her life. She was united in marriage to Sylvester John Rotert, Sr. in 1933 at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Mrs. Rotert was a loving wife, mother and a dedicated teacher. She taught at Cleveland School, Farmer's Institute and Browning School until her retirement in 1950. Mersylla enjoyed sewing and quilting. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose, Missouri. Preceding Mersylla in death were her husband, her parents, a son L.L. "Bud" Rotert, a daughter Gwendolyn Holloway, two sisters, Anna Lee Kalwei and Barbara Gay Hamric. Survivors include her four children: S.J. Rotert of Clinton, Missouri, Marilyn Ziegenbein of Clinton, Missouri, Shirley Rotert of Kansas City, Kansas and Carol Rotert of Cape Coral, Florida; two sisters, Irene Farmer of Clinton, Missouri and Marie Stoneman of Eldon, Missouri; nine grandchildren with one deceased; 14 great-grandchildren with one deceased and two great-great-grandchildren with one deceased.
