Darrell Dennis Dale, age 56, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at his home in Rich Hill, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 5, 1952, in Butler, Mo., the second of three children, and was reared in Rich Hill, by his loving grandparents, Homer and Menta Dale. He attended school in Rich Hill and some of his happiest, early memories were of Cub Scout and Boy Scout activities and playing of football. He graduated with the class of 1970. On Aug. 21, 1970, he married his high school sweetheart, Janet Wheatley, who he always said he fell in love with in the first grade. To this union two children were born, Logan Matthew and Mendy Janell. Darrell was a devoted and loving husband and father and was always in attendance at his children's sporting events and school activities. His proudest moments were additions of six grandchildren to his family. He loved each of them dearly. Darrell joined the church at a young age and was a lifelong active member of the United Methodist Church, where he served as trustee for many years and volunteered his time on many projects. He was employed at Kansas City Power & Light, in LaCygne, Kan., for 31 years, his most recent position being control operator and simulator trainer. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 412. Darrell was an avid football fan, beginning with his own high school football days as a Rich Hill Tiger. He was a loyal fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Rich Hill Tigers. Darrell assisted in the press box at the Tiger games for nearly 20 years. Family and friends were of utmost importance to Darrell, He was happiest when he was spending time at Stockton Lake and there was nothing he enjoyed more than getting a large group together to go camping, boating and water skiing. He always said, "The hotter the better and the more the merrier." Over the years, he taught Logan, Mendy and their friend, and other family and friends to water ski; including church youth groups and youth groups from the community youth development center. He lived life to the fullest and especially cherished his vacations and traveling with close friends and family to many different states. No time was allowed to be wasted during vacation. Every morning was a new adventure. Darrell was preceded in death by his grandparents and his sister, Joyce Elaine. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Janet, of the home, two children, Logan Dale and wife Shanna, of Houston, and Mendy Bridgewater and husband Jason, of Rich Hill; sister Donna McCarty and husband Mickey, of Joplin; six grandchildren, Mariah Corrin, Emma Elaine and Carson Matthew Dale, and Adam Dale, Clifton Tom and Daniel Jason Bridgewater; mother-in-law, Elnora Wheatly, of Rich Hill; sister-in-law Karen Adams and friend Lary Brasher; sister-in-law, Madeleine Watson and husband David; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces, and a host of friends. Darrell was loved by many and will be deeply missed. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3, at Rich Hill Methodist Church, in Rich Hill. Interment followed at Green Lawn Cemetery, in Rich Hill. Ashley Rachelle Davis, age 18 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, July 2, 2008 in Crawford County near Steelville, Missouri as a result of a canoeing accident. She was born October 4, 1989 to Terry Joe and Valera Kay Maxted Davis in Clinton, Iowa. Ashley is survived by her parents, Terry and Kay Davis of Butler, Missouri; three sisters, Catherine Joline Davis, Stacy Lynn Davis and Lindsay Michelle Davis all of Butler, Missouri; maternal grandparents, Vernon and Clareca Maxted of Marshall, Missouri; paternal grandfather, Harold Davis of Orange, California; two nephews, Draden and Anthony; one niece, Makayla, two uncles and three aunts; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Mary Helen Davis and an aunt, Gayle Charles.

Howard Allen Davis, 70, Olathe, KS, died Oct.13, 2008, at Olathe Medical Center due to heart failure. Funeral services will be held Thurs. Oct. 16th at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe, KS. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, MO. He was born July 11, 1938, in Archie, MO, to Howard C. and Alice (Crow) Davis. Allen farmed with his family in Archie, MO, until he went to work for General Motors in 1959. He worked at the Delco and Fairfax Plants for a total of 48 years, retiring in 2007. He was a Skilled Trades Representative for UAW Local 1021. Preceding him in death were his parents; his second wife; Hilda, brother; James Davis; and a stepson; Gregory Downs. Mr. Davis leaves two daughters; Kristal Thompson, Leawood, KS, and Barbara Hardie, Olathe, KS, four stepchildren; Richard Downs and Donna Hewitt, Olathe, KS; Steven Downs, Belton, MO, and Jennifer Downs, Kansas City, MO, and many grandchildren.

Lorena Davis, 87, Humansville, died Monday, June 30, 2008 in Citizens Memorial Hospital. The daughter of Samuel W. and Bessie (Ethridge) Hill, she was born February 15, 1921 at Schell City, Missouri. Formerly of Caledonia, Illinois, she had been a resident of Humansville for the past 20 years. Lorena and John Leslie Davis were married January 15, 1938. He preceded her in death June 16, 2004. Her parents, daughter, Donna J. Coble, and 5 sisters, Violet Schuman, Madge Hill, Velda Hill, Ina Hutton and Opal Shouse, also preceded her in death. Lorena was a homemaker and a member of Bible Baptist Church in Belvidere, Illinois, where she greatly enjoyed the fellowship. The sixth of six daughters, her father gave her the nickname of "Pete" because of the lack of boys in the family. She was a devoted wife and mother with a cheerful outlook and smile for everyone. Survivors include 1 daughter, Linda J. Davis, Humansville; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, John L. and Shirley Davis, Rockford, Illinois, Stanley J. and Sandra Davis, Davis Junction, Illinois and David K. and Teresa Davis, Belvidere, Illinois; a son-in-law, Norman Coble, Dunnegan; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday, July 4, 2008 at the Dunnegan Bible Baptist Church. Interment will be in Humansville Cemetery.

Mary Karpuk Davis, June 15, 1919 - August 24, 2009. Mary Karpuk Davis, 90, Adrian, MO, died Monday, August 24, 2009 at Adrian Manor, Adrian, MO. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church of Adrian in Adrian. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Mary was born June 15, 1919 to Joseph and Sophia Karpuk in Kansas City, Kansas. At the age of six her family moved to Bates County eleven miles east of Adrian. She attended school at Crawford for eight years and then went to Adrian High School. She graduated in 1937 and then attended Warrensburg College. After obtaining her teaching certificate she taught school at Crescent Hill, Altona, Butler and Adrian. Mary also substituted for several years prior to opening her antique shop in Adrian. She was united in marriage, to Wayne C. Davis in 1940 and to this union two sons were born, Jerry Wayne and Ritchie Joe. Antiquing was a lifelong hobby of Mary's. The highlight of this was the opening of her own antique shop in 1976. Not only did Mary enjoy her work, she was also very knowledgeable. She spent many hours researching and learning about her craft. This knowledge and her shrewd business sense made her shop a favorite stop of many. Mary was active in several organizations. She was a charter member of the Adrian Garden Club, member of the Eastern Star and President of the Adrian School Board. In 1996, she became a member of the Bates County Mizzou Club. As a member of the United Methodist Church she was a Sunday school teacher and held the offices of Secretary and Treasurer. Mary was a strong believer of education. She enjoyed attending Adrian School activities and always followed the successes of local students. Mary is survived by her two sons Jerry Davis of Adrian, Missouri; Ritchie Davis and wife Debbie of Adrian; four grandchildren, Kristen Burns and husband Stephen, of Prosper, Texas, Douglas Davis and wife Valeigh of Frisco, Texas, Katy Bruto and husband Shaun of Butler, and Gabe Davis of Clinton, Missouri; six great-grandchildren, Nora and Jake Burns, Parker and Campbell Davis, and Avery and Mylie Bruto; and sister Annie Mawson of Archie. She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne C. Davis and her brother Joseph Karpuk, Jr. She will be missed.

Ad. Deffenbaugh, a retired contractor and carpenter, died Friday evening, December 11, 1937, at 6:00 o'clock. Mr. Deffenbaugh had been in failing health for several months. He had been a resident of Adrian and Altona communities for the past 70 years, coming with his mother and brothers to Altona community when a small boy from Madison county, Ohio. Adam Watson Deffenbaugh, the son of Adam and Minerva Deffenbaugh, was born in Madison county, Ohio, May 31, 1864, and departed this life December 10, 1937, at the age of 73 years, 6 months and ..days. When he was 2 years of age he come with his widowed mother, two brothers, and two sisters to a farm near Altona, Bates county, Missouri, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Frances M. Howard on May 19, 1887. Immediately after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Deffenbaugh took up their residence in Kansas City, where they resided until they moved to a farm two miles southeast of Archie. In 1895 they moved from this farm to Mrs. Deffenbaugh's old home farm five miles east of Adrian, where they resided until taking up their residence in Adrian in 1908. He was united with the Altona Baptist Church in 1905, bringing his membership from a Presbyterian Church. After coming to Adrian he became a member of the Adrian Baptist Church. Mr. Deffenbaugh is survived by his wife, two sons, W. I. Deffenbaugh, Chicago, Ill., and C. L. Deffenbaugh, Kennewick, Wash.; one daughter, Mrs. Russell Ray of Adrian; one brother, Elmer Deffenbaugh of Adrian; one half-sister, Mrs. Van Norton of Tipton, Indiana; one half-brother, Charlie Evans of Washington, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a kind and considerate husband and father. Funeral services for Mr. Deffenbaugh were held from the Adrian Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon, December 12. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

MRS. A. DEFFENBAUGH DIES AT HOME HERE AFTER LONG ILLNESS - Native Missourian Had Lived In This Community Since 1878; Funeral Services Held Friday Mrs. Adam Deffenbaugh, a pioneer resident of north Bates county, passed away at her home in Adrian last Wednesday evening, October 12, 1949. Mrs. Deffenbaugh had been in failing health for several years and had been confined to her home for nearly 6 months. She was 78 years of age. Frances Howard Deffenbaugh, the daughter of Samuel and Margaret Porter Howard, was born in Johnson county, Missouri, February 4, 1871. When she was 7 years of age, she came with her widowed mother, a sister and brother, to a farm near Altona, where she grew to womanhood. May 19, 1887, she was united in marriage with Adam Watson Deffenbaugh. After their marriage, the young couple took up residence in Kansas City, where they resided until they moved to a farm southeast of Archie. In 1895 they moved again to the Altona community where they resided until moving to Adrian in 1908. At an early age she was converted to Christianity and became a member of the Altona Baptist church. After moving to Adrian she became a member of the First Baptist church here. Mrs. Deffenbaugh was preceded in death by her husband December 10, 1937. She is survived by two sons, W. I. Deffenbaugh, of Chicago, and C.L. Deffenbaugh of Walla Walla, Washington; one daughter, Mrs. Russell Ray of Adrian; one sister, Mrs. Katie Burke of Centerville, Washington. There are also 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Deffenbaugh were held Friday afternoon, October 14, at the Adrian Baptist church. Interment was at Altona cemetery.

Virga Mae Demro, 81, Gardner, Kan., formerly of Moundville, Mo., passed away on Thursday Sept. 7, 2006, at Meadowbrook Rehab Hospital in Gardner, Kan. Virga was born at home on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1925, to Paul F. Scholl and Vona Elizabeth Sargeant Scholl in Republic, Iowa. She married Lloyd McKenzie in February of 1945. Later she and Don Demro were married on March 25, 1967, in Plainfield, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1985. Virga and Don left Iowa in 1970 and made their home in Moundville. She was a member of the Deerfield Baptist Church. Since 1998, Virga lived with her daughter in Shawnee, Kan. Survivors include one daughter, Linda McKenzie, Shawnee; one grandson, Brad McKenzie, Charles City, Iowa; two granddaughters, Liz Landis, Gardner, and Brenda Bartz, Vinton, Iowa; three great-grandsons, Michael McKenzie, Tyler Bartz, and Justin Bartz; three great-granddaughters, Kaitlin Landis, Abby Bartz, and Mariah McKenzie; one brother, Bud Scholl and his wife Celine, New Hampton, Iowa; and one great-aunt, Vada Sargeant, Ionia, Iowa. In addition to her husband, Don, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Gary, in October of 1988 in Charles City. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 11, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kan.

Zella Jane "Janie" Dickey, 66, Nevada, Mo., passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at her son's home in Moundville, Mo. She was born Jan. 29, 1941, in Kansas City, Mo., to Henry Ross Crowe and Edna Pearl Smith Crowe. She married Daniel D. "Blue" Dickey on Oct. 25, 1959, in Arcadia, Kan. Janie grew up in Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1959. She worked in medical records at Nevada Medical Clinic, Nevada State Hospital and Nevada Regional Medical Center where she retired as director of quality management in 2000. She later worked part time at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, Kan. Janie was a very active member of the First Christian Church and the bell choir. She was also a member of the BPW of Nevada. Survivors include one son, Danny Ray Dickey and his wife, Donna, Moundville, Mo.; five grandchildren, Derrick Dickey, Jared Dickey and his wife, Amber, Afton Bugg and her husband Donnie, Sheena Dickey and Daniel Bley; four great-grandchildren, Keyton Dickey, Izac McDermott, Dallas Bugg and Jordyn Dickey; and two brothers, Mike Crowe, Joplin, Mo., and Joseph Crowe and his wife, Margie, in Jefferson City, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Tony Lee in 1974. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 3, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Committal will be in Worsley Cemetery, Bronaugh, Mo.

Callie Jay Dobbs, age 32, a resident of Richards, Mo., died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, as the result of an automobile accident near Richards. He was born Feb. 27, 1975, in Muskogee, Okla., the son of J. B. Dobbs and Wanita Tate. He worked in construction and in breaking horses. As well as his love for horses, he also enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his father, J. B. Dobbs, of Oklahoma; his mother, Wanita Tate of Fort Scott; three sons, Tyler Lee, Takota Dobbs and Tyler (T. J.) Dobbs; and two daughters, Shae Dobbs and Leslie Dobbs. Also surviving is his maternal grandmother, Betty Elizabeth Tate, Climax Springs, Mo.; one brother, John Polland, Takoma, Wash.; and four sisters, Gayla Boan, Galena, Mo., Rene Womelsdorf, Welda, Kan., Lisa Dunlap, Faxon, Okla., and Shelly Yocham, Fort Scott. There are many nieces and nephews surviving. He was preceded in death by one son, Cecil Dobbs, and Cecil's mother, Krystal Pearson, who both died in the same auto accident as Callie; his maternal grandfather, Omar Tate; and his paternal grandfather, Cecil J. Samuel Dodson, 72 years old, died at his home, one mile northeast of Altona, on Monday, July 27, 1931, following a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Dodson had resided in Bates county for a long time and was well known in the community where he resided. Funeral services for Mr. Dodson were held Tuesday from the Altona Baptist church. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery. Creath and Six were the funeral directors.

RUN OVER BY FRIEGHT CAR -- WM. DODSON, A FARMER, OF ALTONA KILLED BY SWITCHING TRAIN SATURDAY. -- William Dodson, eighty nine years old, was knocked down by a freight train while switching just back of the depot Saturday noon, and injured so badly that he died at three o'clock in Dr. Robinson's office. His right arm was severed below the elbow, he suffered compound fractures of both of his legs just below the hips besides bruises and cuts. He was taken to the office of Dr. E. E. Robinson and he and Dr. T. B. Todd dressed his injuries. He was standing at the north end of the depot and on the house track when an engine coupled onto a string of cars, knocking Mr. Dodson down. Lee Stith was standing in front of his garage and saw the train hit Mr. Dodson. He is a former railroad conductor and gave the engineer a signal to stop immediately and it is on account of his presence that the train was stopped in time to prevent Mr. Dodson's body being run over by the train. Mr. Dodson was in town from his farm near Altona to meet his daughter, Mrs. Self, of Jackson county, and was waiting for the train when injured. When Mrs. Self arrived she found her father fatally injured. The remains were taken to Knight's undertaking rooms and prepared for burial. The funeral was held, Monday at his home near Altona. Mr. Dodson had lived in this county for twelve years, owning what is known as the Moulton farm. He formerly owned 189 acres near Kansas City, on which the suburb of Dodson is situated and it is from Mr. Dodson that this town was named, he living there for about thirty years. Mr. Dodson lived with a son and daughter on his farm and was a highly respected citizen in this section. It was a shock to the whole community to hear of his tragic death.

Jerden E. Dunfield, 69, Nevada, MO passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, KS. He was born November 4, 1938 in Nevada, MO to William Brown Dunfield and Opal Leora Wright Dunfield. Mr. Dunfield was born and raised in Nevada and attended Nevada High School. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959 and lived in a variety of locales and has lived in Vernon County, MO since 1988. He was a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church in Nevada. He worked all his life in the air conditioning/ heating and refrigeration service and repair. Survivors include six children, Steven Jorden Dunfield and Gregory Allen Dunfield, both of Manchester, NH, Jarred Michael Dunfield and Melissa Dunfield, both of Nevada, MO, Jeremy Edward Dunfield and Dedra Rose Dunfield, both of Woodland, WA; several grandchildren; four brothers, Lloyd Dunfield, Nevada, MO, Joe Dunfield, El Dorado Springs, MO, Robert Dunfield, Roseville, CA and James William Dunfield, Greenfield, MO; five sisters, Linda Ayers, Mound City, KS, Sue Sandoval, Norwalk, VA, Irene Christian, Olathe, KS, Mary Stewart, La Cygne, KS, and Jo Ann Wyrick, Reeds Springs, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Bill Dunfield, George Dunfield and Ernest Dunfield. Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Moore Cemetery, Nevada, MO.

Goldie Alice Dunn was born August 21, 1895 in Barry county, Missouri the daughter of Myrtle Morris and U. G. Blankenship. She passed away Monday, March 24, 1980 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital at the age of 86. She was married to the late Herbert Dunn and had lived most of their married life in Cass County, Missouri near Garden City. Goldie was preceded in death by her husband in 1963. She then moved to Butler. Goldie was a member of the First Christian Church of Butler and the Philathea Class for many years. The past few years she had lived at the County Side Nursing home where she received wonderful care. Goldie is survived by one brother Oscar Blankenship of Adrian, and three sisters, Bessie Brooks and Blanche Lyter both of Butler; and Maymie Thompson of Ballard. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 27, 1980 at the Underwood-Steinbeck Chapel, and burial in the Altona Cemetery near Adrian.

Herbert G. Dunn, son of William H. and Lucy Lee Dunn was born May 27, 1885 near Altona, Missouri. He passed from this life May 16, 1963 at the family home in Adrian, Missouri, at the age of 77 years, 11 months, and 14 days. On November 16, 1926 he was united in marriage to Goldie Alice Blankenship of Adrian, Missouri. Mr. Dunn was a farmer all his life except for the 11 years that he worked at the Lula Long Combs Longview Farm at Lee's Summit, Missouri. He had a great love for harness horses. After 30 years of farming in the Garden City, Missouri community, he retired moving back to Adrian, Missouri two years ago. He was a lifelong member of the Christian church, and transferred his membership to the Adrian congregation on October 14, 1962. He is survived by his wife of the home, one sister, Clora Lee Cantrell of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Gentry F. Dunn, Kansas City, Mo.; one niece and one nephew; a cousin, Daisy Geiger who lives in the family home, and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Friday, May 17, 1963 at the Adrian Christian church. Burial in the Altona Cemetery.

MRS. LUCY LEE DUNN DEAD - Mrs. Lucy Lee Dunn, 78 years old, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. E. Cantrell, Sunday, March 24, 1941. Mrs. Dunn was the widow of the late W. M. Dunn, of the Altona community, who died in November, 1937. Besides the daughter, Mrs. Cantrell, she is survived by two sons, Herbert Dunn of Garden City and Gentry Dunn of St. Joseph, Mo. Funeral services were held at Dayton, Wednesday afternoon, and burial in the Altona cemetery.

WM. H. DUNN DEAD - Wm. H. (Billy) Dunn died at the home of his son, H. G. Dunn, near Austin, in Cass county Tuesday morning, November 15. Mr. Dunn had been in failing health for two years. At the time of his death his age was 73 years, 9 months and 8 days. Mr. Dunn was born in Morgan county, Missouri, February 7, 1859, the son of Edward L. and Elizabeth Dunn. Before Mr. Dunn was five years old both his parents had died. After their death he was taken into the home of Hardaway and Ann J. Harrison, and reared to manhood. He came to Bates county with the Harrison family in 1868. The family located in the Altona neighborhood at that time and Mr. Dunn spent the remainder of his life in that community. Henry Harrison and Mrs. Lou Reeder, both of Adrian, children of Hardaway Harrison and Mr. Dunn, were reared as brother and sister. Until last spring Mr. Dunn resided on his home farm in Grand River township. He then moved with his son to Cass county. Mr. Dunn was well and favorably known throughout Bates county. At one time he was the democratic nominee for County Clerk but was defeated in the election. He had always been active in politics in the county. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Lee Dunn and three children; Mrs. C. E. Cantrell, Kansas City; Gentry Dunn, at St. Joseph, and Herbert Dunn, with whom he made his home. Funeral services will be held for Mr. Dunn this (Thursday) afternoon at Altona. Burial will be made in the Altona cemetery.
