Funeral services for Sudie O'Rourke will be Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri. Burial, Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Sudie Elizabeth O'Rourke, age 91 of Smithville, Missouri, formerly of Butler, Missouri and Platte City, Missouri died Friday, August 8, 2008 at Golden Living Center in Smithville. She was born July 17, 1917 to Leroy and Esta Callahan Poindexter in Johnstown, Missouri. Sudie is survived by her stepdaughter, Maudeline Kerns and husband Kenneth of Harligen, Texas; three step-grandsons, Kenneth Kerns Jr. and wife Sandy of Parkville, Missouri and James Kerns and Larry Engleman and wife Carol, all of Kansas City, Missouri; cousin Gerald Callahan and wife June of Butler, Missouri; and other cousins and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Estill (Sadie) Engleman and second husband Orville O'Rourke.

Archie Odneal of Spruce, Mo., died Sunday, February 29, 1920 at 8:00 o'clock at a hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Death was the result of an operation for appendicitis. Archie Odneal was born in Bates county and was at the time of his death, twenty-nine years of age. He had been a resident of this county all his life and had, for several years, been a rural mail carrier out of the Spruce post office. Besides the bereaved wife and two children, he leaves a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Odneal, three sisters, Misses Edna and Helen at home, and Mrs. V. W. Knowles of Ronan, Mont., and three brothers, Bruce Ray and Ralph of the home address. Mr. Odneal was a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by his wife and children. His many friends of the Spruce neighborhood mourn with the bereaved family the loss of this young man. Funeral services were held at the family home in Spruce Monday afternoon. Burial was made in the Radford Cemetery at Spruce. -- Butler Democrat 4th.

J. C. Ogden died suddenly at Rich Hill Friday morning of heart failure. Mr. Ogden formerly resided in Altona, where he was engaged in the mercantile business. He moved to Rich Hill last June. The remains were brought here Saturday and buried at Altona.

Charlotte Flashes - William Oldham was born in Stapelford, Lincolnshire, England, September 8, 1834, died January 16, 1922, age 87 years, 4 months and 8 days. He and two brothers, George and Thomas, came to America on a sailing vessel in the summer of 1859. They were six weeks on their voyage. He live a few years in Ohio then went to Illinois, where he married Martha M. Ritchey of Livingston, Co., Illinois, September 19, 1867, who preceded him in death June 22, 1907. To this union 8 children were born, of which 5 survive him; James W. Oldham of Colorado, Mrs. Sarah Zinn of Minden, Mo., Henry Oldham of Edgerton, Kansas, Frank and Grant Oldham both of this place. He came to Bates County in 1869 where he resided on a farm two miles north of Virginia until about a year ago, when he went to the home of his son, Grant on account of poor health, where he died. Funeral services were held at the home of his son, Wednesday afternoon, January 18. Remains were laid to rest in the Adam Howl Cemetery by the side of his wife and children. His living children were all present at his funeral, except James of Colorado. Another early Charlotte settler is at rest.

Roy Seth Olsen, September 29, 1934 - April 20, 2009. Roy Seth Olsen, 74, Archie, MO, died Monday, April 20, 2009 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, MO. Graveside services will be held Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO. Roy was born September 29, 1934 in Sisseton, SD, the son of Roy and Olive (Birdoall) Olsen. He married Barbara Sue Shepherd on April 1, 1976. Roy was a 20-year veteran in the U. S. Army. He had lived in Joplin, MO before moving to Archie in 2007. He had worked as an electronics engineer for LeBarge in Joplin for 12 years before retiring. Roy is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; one son, Shawn Olsen and his wife, Robin of Archie, MO; four brothers, Charles Olsen, Minneapolis, MN, Neil Olsen, Minneapolis, MN, Ervin Olsen, Cavow, SD and Merle Olsen, Minneapolis, MN; one sister, Opal Cross, Aberdeen, SD; three grandchildren, Baeley and Zoe Olsen, Archie, MO and Corbin Scowalter, Joplin, MO.

Edna Lucille Osborn, 87 of Archie, MO died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at her home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Atkinson Chapel in Archie. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Edna was born May 21, 1922 in Everett, MO, the daughter of Ernest Edward and Etta Mae (Blake) Goddard. She married Billy J. Osborn on September 14, 1957 in Archie, MO. Edna lived in Kansas City, MO from 1957-1976 before moving to their farm in Archie in 1976. She had worked as a meat wrapper for Kroger Grocery in Kansas City for 10 years. She was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed canning, making her famous apple butter and helping out on the farm. Edna was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Billy J. Osborn, of the home; one daughter, Betty Wellington, Harrisonville, MO; one brother, Norman R. "Bud" Goddard, Harrisonville, MO; one sister, Opal Hawkins, Harrisonville, MO; two granddaughters and four great-grandsons.

Violet Alexander was born Dec. 8, 1927, in St. Clair County, Mo., near Tiffin, Mo., to Chester and Beulah (Hart) Alexander. They moved to the Walker area about 1930, and she spent her entire life in Vernon County until moving to Bolivar about 1994. She died Feb. 16, 2007, at St. John's hospital in Springfield, Mo. Violet was a graduate of Walker High School in 1946. She attended college at Warrensburg, but after an illness she was forced to return home. She attended summer classes at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar and became a teacher in the Vernon County schools, her first at Mobley from 1947-'48. She taught at Green Springs 1948-'49, and at Flat Rock from 1949-'53. Violet was the secretary at Schell City schools for several years, the clerk for the Nevada Baptist Association, and retired as payroll clerk at the Nevada Regional Medical Center. On Feb. 11, 1950, she married Dale Overton. They farmed in the Schell City area. They had one daughter, Phyllis Ann. Phyllis and her husband, Bob Garrison, have two sons, Tyler and Shawn, who were the loves of her life. Violet was a member of the Schell City Baptist Church before moving to Nevada, after which they joined the First Baptist Church. At the time of her death she was a member of the Fair Play Baptist Church. Violet remained quietly active during her retirement years. She enjoyed freelance writing having written several articles for various publications. In addition to her article, Violet compiled a book recording the history of the Fair Play School District, where her daughter and son-in-law were teachers and her grandsons attended school. Violet was devoted to her family, especially her grandsons. She spent many enjoyable hours going to Tyler's auctions and watching Missouri University ballgames with Shawn. Even as her health declined she stayed determined to attend all the activities they were involved in. Violet is survived by her daughter, Phyllis and her husband, Bob Garrison; grandsons, Tyler and Shawn Garrison; one sister, Neoma Foreman, Walker; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Beulah Alexander; her husband, Dave Overton; and her sister, Annie Haynes, who died one day before she did. Funeral services were Sunday, Feb. 18, at Sheldon Chapel, El Dorado Springs. Interment was in Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City.

John Edwin Owen died at his home in Altona, Mo., Saturday, April 7, 1917, of a lingering illness of paralysis; aged 57 years, 6 months and 23 days. Mr. Owen was born in Grand River township, Bates county, Mo., September 15, 1859, and spent his entire life in that vicinity. He was united in marriage with Myrtle Yancey, of Altona, August 13th, 1887, to this happy union one child was born, Ina C. his wife preceded him in death about six years ago. Mr. Owen confessed faith in Christ and became a member of the Christian Church about 25 years ago. He is survived by his mother; daughter, one sister and a grandchild. Mr. Owen was an excellent citizen in every sense of the term and a high-minded Christian gentleman. In the community where he spent his entire life he was held in the highest esteem. Honored and respected as a citizen and gentleman. He was deeply devoted to his family and bestowed his affections and means liberally for the health and comfort of his wife and child. Edwin Owen will be sadly missed in the community, but his gentle influence for good will live as a testimony to his worth as an upright man. Funeral services for Mr. Owen were held from the Altona Christian church Sunday afternoon. A large congregation of mourning friends assembled to pay a tribute of respect to the one they had learned to love by years of close association. The body was interred in the Altona cemetery. The mother and daughter have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in this bereavement. Carr was the undertaker.

A message was received here Tuesday night announcing the death of Mrs. J. E. Owen at Prescott, Arizona, on that day, of consumption. Mrs. Owen had been in failing health for several years and went to Arizona eighteen months ago in the hope that the climate would restore her health but she received little benefit from the change more than to prolong her life for a few months. The body will be brought here for burial and is expected to arrive Friday night. At the hour of going to press the funeral arrangements had not been announced but the services will no doubt be held in Altona as that was her home for many years. We are not at this time in possession of sufficient data to publish an obituary, this will appear next week.

A VISIT OF DEATH - When the pale horse and his rider made his unwelcome visit to the home of Mr. J. E. Owen and took Mrs. Owen from our midst there was a gloom of sorrow spread over the entire community. By the death of Mrs. Owen the family has lost an affectionate and faithful wife and mother; the community a loyal and loving friend and neighbor; the Church one of its foremost, most faithful and diligent Christians; the world one of its noblest and assiduous citizens. In her home she was a tender mother and wife. She had her work to have a Christian and an attractive home. Indeed she filled her parental sphere as only a noble and true Christian woman should. In the community she was a neighbor whose well wishes and sympathy was worthy of having. To the sick and afflicted she was a staff and a comfort, always ready to serve them and bring sunshine unto their home. She was indeed a jewel in the community and leaves many friends to lament their losses. As a Christian and Church worker, she was loyal to her Master and her faith. Her faith and love for Christianity was altogether lovely and an example to be admired. Her church will indeed miss her sorely. She was largely instrumental both directly and indirectly in the erection of the new Christian church in Altona, which now stands as a monument to her good efforts. In the world at large we can say, the world is better for her having lived init. In it she leaves many bereaved friends and many kind deeds. She has filled a premature grave although she made a desperate struggle for life unto the last. The many friends join in extending their heart felt sympathy to the bereaved ones at home and shall try to comfort and console them in this their hour of grief and sorrow.

Mrs. Emma Owens died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Kiersey near Ballard, Thursday, April 17th, 1919; aged, 64 years, 3 months and 8 days. Emma Harriet Patterson was born at Elwood, Saline county, Missouri, January 9th, 1885, and spent her entire life in her native state. In early life she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church South and remained a faithful member of same until her death. August 6th, 1885, she was united in marriage with William r. Owens. To this union five children were born, one died in infancy. The children who survive the mother are, Floyd Owens, of Dallas Texas; Orville Owens, of Emporia, Kansas; Dale Owens, of Adrian, and Mrs. Fred Kiersey, of Spruce, Mo. The husband died about ten years ago. The Owens family moved from North Missouri to Bates county over twenty years ago and they are excellent people. Mrs. Owens was a charming lady and a devout Christian. No one in the community stood higher in the esteem of those who knew her. She always reflected the spirit of purity and helpfulness. In her death the community looses one of its best citizens and the children a loving and devoted mother. Funeral services for Mrs. Owens were held from the Altona Methodist church Friday afternoon, April 18th. A large congregation of sorrowing friends were present to pay a tribute of respect to the dead and to comfort the mourning children. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Earl A. Oyer, 82, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Kansas to Martin and Hazel Oyer. He married Frances L. Dee on Dec. 9, 1950, in Nevada, Mo., and she survives of the home. Earl was born in Kansas and came to Nevada at a young age with his family. He worked for Double Cola Bottling Plant in Nevada for several years, for Missouri Highway Department and the City of Nevada. Later, he owned and operated the Earl Oyer Disposal Service for many years until his retirement. Survivors in addition to his wife Frances, include one son, Bobby L. Oyer and his wife Judy, Atchison, Kan.; and two grandsons, Kevin Oyer and Scott Oyer, both of Atchison. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ray Oyer, Frank Oyer and Walter Oyer; and two sisters, Bertha Wallace and Mabel Pippen.
