Funeral services for Truman LaVerne Gabriel will be Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri. Burial, Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Truman LaVerne Gabriel, age 84 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, March 31, 2008 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born March 6, 1924 to Ernest and Anna Helen Kipf Gabriel in Bates County, Missouri. Truman is survived by his wife, Mary Gabriel of Butler, Missouri; three daughters, Terry Gabriel and Robin Gabriel of Adrian, Missouri and Judy Gabriel of Butler, Missouri; two stepdaughters, Louetta Wilson of Butler, Missouri and Tammie Hedges of Blue Springs, Missouri; a sister, Wanda Lois Waytes of Mills, Wyoming; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Max; and a sister, Virginia Salazar.

Violet Garber, 96, Rural Montevallo, MO departed life's journey Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Cedar County Memorial Hospital, El Dorado Springs, MO following a brief illness. She was born December 17, 1911 in Cedar County, MO to Richard Brasher and Bessie Mann Brasher. Mrs. Garber married Otis S. Garber in 1934 and had lived on the Garber family century farmstead near Montevallo for over 74 years. He preceded her in death in May of 1991. Prior to her marriage, she attended the Springfield Teacher's College, Springfield, MO and taught school for several years in Cedar and Vernon counties. She was a charter member of the Jolly Homemakers club of Montevallo and attended regularly until she was over 90 years of age. She was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church. Survivors include three children, Betty June Murrah and her husband Bobby, Norman Dale Garber and his wife Dotti, both of Port St. John FL, and Donald Lee Garber and his wife Joyce, rural Milo, MO; Six grandchildren, Paula Hacker, David Snyder, Kevin Snyder, Kelly Snyder, Jeff Garber and Donna Stewart, 18 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Cathern Zollman, Boise, ID; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Otis S. Garber, one grandson, Greg Garber, two brothers, two sisters, and one son-in-law. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 21, 2008 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, MO.

Margueritte Nadine Garnett, age 94, of Butler, Mo., died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born May 15, 1913, to Harvey Bunyan and Sylvia Paulette Hines Garnett in McGirk, Mo. Nadine taught at several schools including Bates County Rural Schools, Butler Elementary and Joplin Junior High. After 43 years of teaching, she retired in 1978. Nadine is survived by a brother, Norris Dean Garnett and wife, Elizabeth, of Butler; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Garnett, of Raymore, Mo.; two nieces; and six nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard LeRoy Garnett; and a sister-in-law, Irene Garnett. Funeral services were Wednesday, April 30, at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.

William Stevens "Steve" Garr, 68, Tyro, Kan., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at his home in Tyro following a brief illness. He was born Nov. 1, 1937, in Coffeyville, Kan., to Clarence Oliver Garr and Margaret Lucele Stevens Garr. He was married to Betty Catherine Pittman on May 16, 1956, in Caney, Kan., and she preceded him in death on Aug. 18, 2005, He later married Wydene Smotherman Finney on June 10, 2006, in Caney, and she survives of the home. Steve was born and reared in southwest Kansas. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 until 1962. He made his living in a variety of self-employment areas including electrical contracting, a service station and farming. He later worked for a number of years in a maintenance supervisory capacity in the printing business and finally as a cattleman in Vernon County. He was a member of the Cape Fear Baptist Church in North Carolina, a Mason and an avid team roper. Survivors in addition to his wife, Wydene, include two sons, Dennis Garr, Springdale, Ark., Bill Garr, Lamar, Mo.; one daughter, Cathy Cain, St. Pauls, N.C.; five grandsons; one great-grandson, numerous stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Jo Garr. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 11, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, Mo.

Ruby Mildred Jackson Garris, 79, Butler, Mo., died Jan. 3, 1992 at the Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born Aug. 10, 1912 west of Passaic, Bates County, Mo. to Alexander Marshall and Minnie Alice Cook Jackson. She spent 45 years in Arizona as an owner and operator of a motel, moving back to Butler in 1972 to care for her mother. She was married to Tommie F. Lewis Oct. 17, 1940. He died Aug. 1, 1972. On March 29, 1982 she married Gay Garris. She was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Alex Jackson and her parents. She leaves her husband of the home and many other relatives. Graveside funeral services were held Jan. 5 at the Adam Howell Cemetery near Virginia, Mo. (Note: Cemetery marker surname is Jackson)

Ross Benjamin Garton, age 23, of Nevada, died suddenly on Monday, Sept. 10, 2007. He was born April 16, 1984, in Nevada Mo., to Larry Eldon Garton and Martha Louise Belcher Garton. Ross was born and reared in Nevada, Mo. He graduated from Nevada High School with honors in 2003 where he was a member of the National Honor's Society, the track and field, football, and speech and debate teams. He spent three years at the University of Missouri in Columbia. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nevada. He was currently employed by Long and Sneed Sewer Services in Nevada, Mo. Survivors include his parents, Larry and Martha "March" Garton, of Nevada; one sister Megan Garton, of New Orleans, La.; maternal grandparents, Carl and Louise Belcher, of Nevada,: special family, Dayton and Marlyn Long, Kenneth and Marla Kay Sneed and their son Brett, all of Nevada; several aunts, uncles, cousins and his many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eldon and Rosalee Garton. Graveside services will be held Thursday, Sept. 13, at Newton Burial Park in Nevada.

Shirley Faye Gayman, 67, the daughter of Isaac and Lua Mae (Gunsaullus) Gilliland was born Sept. 2, 1940, in Gassville, Ark., and passed from this life on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008. Shirley spent her younger years in Arkansas attending a small country elementary school, then attending high school in Mountain Home, where she graduated in 1958. After high school, Shirley along with a couple of her sisters, ventured off to Kansas City to look for work. They moved into a place on the Plaza and within a short time Shirley began employment with an insurance agency. It was while living in the city that she met Duane Robert Gayman. They were married on Nov. 14, 1959, in Schell City, Mo., but still made Kansas City their home until 1968, when they moved to Schell City to stay. They made this area their home for the rest of their lives. Shirley enjoyed living and working alongside Duane on the farm and she always reared an extremely large garden. As she gathered and canned her produce, Shirley always encouraged the children to pitch in to help, much to their dismay. She also enjoyed the horses, cows and chickens on the farm. But most important to Shirley was her God and her family. Since her three children were grown, she devoted much of her time to being a grandma, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She spent as much time with her grandchildren as she could and always welcomed their visits. Survivors include her three children, Michael Duane Gayman and his wife Rona, of Oronogo, Mo., Lisa Shirland Wittman and her husband Michael, of Tulsa, and Steven Robert Gayman and his wife Erica, of Walker; seven grandchildren, Austin Carter and Cole Gayman, Landon Lindsay and Logan Bowline and Austin and Tyler Gayman; one brother, James Gilliland, of Gassville, Ark.; six sisters, Mary Lou Brown, of Kansas City, Barbara Jamison and her husband Bob, of Liberty, Karen Gilliland, of Kansas City, Becky Hammack and her husband Gary, of Mountain Home, Ark., Sharon Keeter, of Gassville, Ark., and Wilma Phoenix, of Rossville, Kan.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Duane. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Pentecostal Assembly of God Church, in Nevada. Steven Robert Gayman, 39, Walker, the youngest son of Duane Robert and Shirley Faye (Gilliland) Gayman, was born Aug. 26, 1969, in El Dorado Springs and passed from this life on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008. Steve attended both elementary and high school in Schell city, graduating with the Class of 1987. He then attended college at the School of the Ozarks in Branson where he obtained a degree in Criminal Justice in 1992. It was while living in that area that he met Errica Dawn Storm. They were united in marriage on May 23, 1992, in Licking. After working as a police officer in Hollister for two years and after Errica's graduation from college in 1994, the couple moved to Nevada to make their home. After settling in Nevada, Steve began employment with the City of Nevada also as a police officer, and then moved up quickly through the ranks to attain a Sergeant's position, the position that he was holding at the time of his death. Through the years, he and Errica became the proud parents of two sons. With the exception of his college years, Steve lived his entire life in the Vernon county area. He and Errica, along with the boys built a new home in rural Walker in 2004 and settled back on the family farm. Steve was baptized as a young boy and had most recently been attending the Pentecostal Assembly of God Church in Nevada. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, loved horses and always participated in sports. He coached the Fraternal Order of Police youth baseball team before his own boys were old enough to play and just this past summer he had helped coach Austin's Nevada Youth Team. Steve was raised in a strong Christian home and had always carried his faith with him throughout his life and in the life that he and Errica had made for their boys. Survivors include his wife, Errica, of the home in rural Walker; his two young sons, Steven Austin and Tyler Matthew, also of the home; one brother, Mike Gayman and his wife, Rona, and their sons Austin and Cole, Oronogo; one sister, Lisa Wittman and her husband, Mike, and their children, Lindsey and Logan, Tulsa, OK; nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends. Steve was preceded in death by his beloved father, Duane, and by his very special mother, Shirley, who passed away just three weeks before Steve. Services were held Monday, Sept. 22, at the Pentecostal Assembly of God Church in Nevada. Interment was in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City.

Artie John Gibson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Gibson, was born near Altona, Bates county, Mo., January 22, 1899, and departed this life October 20th, 1915, aged 10 years, 8 months and 28 days. He died at the Red Cross hospital in Kansas City, where he had been taken two weeks ago to undergo an operation for appendicitis. All that medical skill and loving hearts could do to alleviate his suffering was done, but to no avail. Just before he passed away he prayed a beautiful prayer and sang "When The Roll is Called Up Yonder" and "Nearer My God to Thee".

She was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Nevada, to Robert W. Schnedler and Nellie G. Davis Schnedler. She was married to Ernest E. Gibson on Feb. 15, 1941, in Nevada. He preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 1985. Imogene grew up in Nevada and attended Nevada schools. She worked as a waitress for many years at the 54 Cafe and Carol's Diner in Nevada. She was a member of the Milo Baptist Church, Milo, Mo. Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Kratz and Gary Stukesbary, Walker, and Carol Ann Hendrix, Walker; three sons, Robert Eugene Gibson and his wife Linda, Falls City, Neb., Jerry Lee Gibson and his wife Katherine, Shula, Mo., and Charles Ernest Gibson and his wife Pamala, Steedman, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles Leroy Schnedler, Medford, Ore. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clifford and Robert Schnedler; and one sister, Virginia Klumpp. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 29, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada.

Hallie Maynota Gillespie, 81, Harrisonville, died Feb.14, 2008, at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler. She was born March 28, 1926, in Cass County, the daughter of Asa Ralph and Hallie Maynota (Bigley) Carnes. She was a graduate of Pleasant Hill High School. Feb. 12, 1950, she married Benjamin Andrew Gillespie Jr. at the East Lynne Baptist Church. Mrs. Gillespie worked for Western Electric in Lee's Summit for 27 years before retiring in 1988. She was a Telephone Pioneer. She was a member of the Harrisonville First Baptist Church, the Clown Club and the Eastern Star in Pleasant Hill. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; Benjamin, Dec. 26, 1982; two sisters; four brothers; and a grandson. Surviving are a son, Michael Lee Gillespie, Butler; a daughter, Shirley Range, Oak Grove, Ark.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Services were Feb. 18 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville. Burial was in Orient Cemetery.

A. L. Gilmore, well known Bates County farmer, died at his home, eight miles west of Montrose, at 3 p.m. Wednesday of last week. He had been bedfast since the first of may, during which time he was in a St. Louis Hospital three times. The last two months he was at home with a trained nurse in attendance, but medical skill and loving attention of his family was of no avail. Mr. Gilmore was born more than 71 years ago in Ohio, and came to Missouri when a lad with his parents. He had lived in the same community, just over the Bates County line, since he was ten years old. He was known as one of the most prominent and successful farmers and stockmen of Bates County, specializing in fine cattle and always forward looking and progressive in his farm methods. Surviving Mr. Gilmore is his wife, the former Edna Lawson of Bates County, also four of his five children: Mrs. Archie Evans of Kansas City; Arthur L., Homer H., and Paul L. Gilmore, all of the home. there are also three grandchildren, the children of Mrs. Evans, and four sisters: Mrs. May Mabry and Mrs. Rilla Radford, Bates County; Mrs. Lula Keen, Indianapolis, Ind.; Mrs. Laura Graham, Washington. Deceased attended the Baptist Church and was a member of the IOOF, Modern Woodmen and Masonic lodges at Appleton City. Funeral services were conducted Friday at the Pleasant Home Church, near the Gilmore place. The Masonic lodge was in charge of the burial at the Radford Cemetery, about 1 1/2 miles west of Spruce, where Mr. Gilmore's parents and his infant are buried.

Joseph William Gloodt, age 59 of Nevada, died on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at his home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born on September 10, 1948 in Bellville, IL to Alvin J. Gloodt and Ruth Ann Akermann Gloodt. Joe grew up in Amarillo, TX and attended Paloduro High School. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army. Joe was with the 101st airborne while in Vietnam and later with the 892 Support Unit while in Desert Storm. During his 23 years of service Joe received numerous medals including the Bronze Service Star and the Purple Heart. Joe has lived in Nevada since his retirement from the service. Survivors include one daughter, Michelle Coleman of Nevada, two stepsons, George Dockery of Springfield, MO and Troy Dockery of Nevada, five grandchildren, one brother, Walter Gloodt of Nevada, three sisters, Patricia Cox of Greenwood, MO, Ethel Voight of Nevada, and Mary Smith of Eldorado Springs, MO, numerous nieces, nephews, and many other family members "by heart" that he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment with Military Rites will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Nevada.

OLA GLOYD- Ola Zone Cantrell, daughter of John G. Cantrell and Catherine Jane Cantrell, was born January 5, 1886 and departed this life September 18, 1965 at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 13 days at the Bates County Memorial Hospital. Ola was the third child in a family of eight children. Ola Gloyd lived her entire lifetime in the Altona community. She was a member of the Altona Baptist Church. On March 11, 1908 she was united in marriage to William Irvin Gloyd and to this union one son was born, Wilbur Gloyd, of the home. Ola was preceded in death by her husband who passed away in January 1961. Surviving her besides her son are a sister, Mrs. Nettie Burton of Harrisonville and one brother Clint L. Cantrell of Adrian several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Six Chapel Sunday, September 19, 1965. Burial was in the Altona Cemetery.

Wilbur Cantrell Gloyd 65, son of Zola and Ervin Gloyd was born March 11, 1909 at Altona, Mo. He was a member of the Altona Baptist Church, Oddfellow Lodge and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He worked for the Remington Arms Co., at Lake City and Mo. Highway Dept. He was married to Wilma Marley on June 29, 1968. He was a life long resident of the Adrian community. He leaves his wife Wilma of the home, two step sons, Jack Marley of Denver, Bill Marley of Independence, Mo., two step-granddaughters and one step-grandson. Services were held Dec. 5, 1974 at the Atkinson-Dickey Chapel in Adrian burial in Altona Cemetery.

Clifton E. Godfrey, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Godfrey, of east of this city, died at the home of Mrs. Smith on East Ft. Scott street Sunday evening, November 18. Death was caused by peritonitis following an operation for appendicitis. He had been working on a farm in Iowa, but on account of sickness returned to Butler last week when his ailment was diagnosed as appendicitis and an operation was at once performed, but the disease had progressed too far and death resulted. Funeral services conducted Monday and interment made in the Radford cemetery near Spruce.

Kelsey Marie Golden, age 16 months of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born February 15, 2007 to James Erwin and Victoria Carol Harding Golden in Denver, Colorado. Kelsey was a beautiful, blue eyed, blond haired little girl who enjoyed being around people and dogs. She moved to Fort Scott at the age of eight months and most recently resided in Butler. With a lively personality and a charismatic smile, she loved her little pink teddy bear. Kelsey always wanted to be clean and didn't like being dirty. Only a few short weeks ago, she started speaking and forming words. James Lewis Gonterman, 70, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at his residence, surrounded by family. Jim was born Dec. 8, 1936, in Nevada, Mo., to Earnest and Mary Gonterman. On June 24, 1956, he married his grade school friend and high school sweetheart, Nancy Harper, also of Nevada. He graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in 1958 where he played football and received his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Education. He also received training in military science and tactics. His education was interrupted only by his military service as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1958-'60, and later he became a captain in the Reserves. After his military service, Jim worked as a teacher and football coach in Rolla, Mo. In 1964, he graduated from the University of Missouri with a Masters' of Science in Social Work. After receiving his master's degree, Jim spent the next 43 years dedicated to the profession. Most recently, he was in private practice as a licensed clinical social worker. He held advanced social work recognition as a Board Certified Diplomat in the Academy of Certified Social Workers. Jim was also a licensed professional counselor and a licensed chemical dependency counselor. He consulted with numerous community agencies and professional organizations throughout his career. He served as the executive director for the San Angelo Council on Alcoholism and the director of Mental Services for the Concho Valley Center for Human Advancement. Prior to moving to Texas, he practiced in the state of Missouri as the executive director of the Ozark Community Mental Health Center, which in 1969 was the first comprehensive community mental health center in the state of Missouri. While remaining committed to his profession, Jim was involved in many other interests. He coached pee-wee football and baseball and was president of the Iowa-Missouri District Exchange Club. Jim enjoyed flying, obtaining his commercial pilot's license, hunting, spending time at the condo, and the circle of friends he gained by riding his Honda 1800 Gold Wing. "All angels have Gold Wings." Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and special brother-in-law, Claude Tucker. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy; and their children, daughter, Debbie and husband, Dan Epley of Burleson, Texas; son, Mark Gonterman and wife, Denise of San Angelo, Texas; daughter, Kimberly and husband, Paul Key of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren, Chad and Katie Epley, and Matt, Kathy and Mark Gonterman Jr.; great-grandchild, Kirstie Gonterman; and sister, Phylis Tucker of Springfield, Mo.; sister-in-law, Susan and her husband, Jack Adams, of Olathe, Kan. "Uncle Louie" is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service was held Monday, July 2, at First United Methodist Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home.

Dixie Lee Goodnough, 78, Franklin, Kan., passed away on Wednesday, Sept.19, 2007, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, Mo. She was born Jan. 7, 1929 in Garfield, Ark., to Orville A. Keene and Bessie Pearl Dorris Keene. She was married Sept. 22, 1946, to Marquis D. Brizendine and he preceded her in death March 23, 1998. At the age of four Mrs. Goodnough came to Moundville, Mo., and grew up in that area. She was reared by her mother and stepfather Adam Senkevech. She was a licensed cosmetologist and also worked at the Nevada State Hospital for a number of years. Survivors include three children; Linda Gordon, Springfield, Mo., Carolyn Dickey and her husband Ron, Arma, Kan., and Mark Brizendine and his wife Carol, Norborne, Mo.; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nadine Ashley, Taylor, S.C., and Vinona Gifford, El Dorado Springs, Mo.; three brothers, Tom Senkevech, Nevada, Mo., Jack Senkevech, Terrell, Texas and Max Senkevech, Bronaugh. Mo., and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse and one sister, Wilma Lathrom and two brothers. Willis "Dub" Keene and Howard Senkevech and a special aunt, Hazel Crouse. Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 24, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Deerfleld Cemetery, Deertfield, Mo.

ELIGE S. GOOGE DEAD - Elige S. Googe, for more than 50 years a resident of the Altona neighborhood, passed away Sunday, June 20, 1937. Mr. Googe suffered a stroke of paralysis last January and had been in poor health since. A second stroke Sunday caused his death. His age was 74 years, 6 months and 13 days. Elige S., son of Jerry and Mary Googe, was born in southeast Missouri, January 7, 1862. He grew to manhood in that section and moved to the Altona neighborhood when he was about 22 years old. Except for a short time he has been a continuous resident of that community. September 20, 1888, he was married to Miss Nettie Clark at that time a young lady and native of Altona. They were married at LaCygne, Kansas. To this union three children were born, who with the widow survive. The children are George R. and Dorven J. Googe, of Imperial, California, and Mrs. Hallie Pipes of Adrian. There are four grandchildren. Mr. Googe is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Dickerson, Fontana, Kansas. Funeral services for Mr. Googe were held from the Altona Baptist church Tuesday, June 22. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six funeral service.

MRS. NETTIE GOOGE DEAD - Mrs. Nettie Googe, a pioneer native of Bates county, died at the home of her daughter, Mr. J. B. Pipes, in Adrian, Missouri, Saturday, December 2, 1944. Nettie Googe, daughter of Mary I. and John W. Clark, was born near Altona, Missouri, December 18, 1871. At the time of her death her age was 72 years, 11 months and 14 days. Mrs. Googe had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Pipes, for the past seven years. She was united in marriage to Elijah S. Googe at Lacygne, Kansas, September 22, 1888. To this union three children were born, George R. and Dorven L. Googe and Mrs. J. B. Pipes. Surviving is her daughter, Mrs. Pipes, and son, George R. Googe, Imperial, California. Her husband and one son preceded her in death seven years ago. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Donna Lee Pipes of the home; Donald Pipes, Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. Dorothy Cauzza, Imperial, California, and Jack Googe, who is serving our country overseas. There is a surviving brother, John A. Clark, Kansas City, and numerous other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. In her childhood she was united with the Altona Baptist church and remained a member of that church until her death. She was a devoted wife, mother and neighbor. To know her was to love her. Mrs. Googe's last illness was brief and occurred at the home of relatives in Kansas City, where she was visiting. She was later returned to the home of her daughter and all that was possible was done for her comfort and happiness. Funeral services for Mrs. Googe were held from the Adrian Baptist church Monday, December 4. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six funeral service.

John A. Gorman, son of Mary and Michael Gorman, was born near Fredericksburg, Ind., Feb. 12, 1854 and departed this life May 16, 1940 at the venerable age of 86 years. He was christened in the Catholic faith at an early age and remained true to that faith throughout his lifetime. He grew to manhood in Indiana, living there until 1916 when he went to Texhoma, Texas. In 1935 he came to Missouri where he made his hoe with his brother near Spruce, Mo. He is survived by one brother, Joseph Gorman, a number of nieces and nephews to whom he was a second father. Six brothers, five sisters and his father having preceded him in death. A number of relatives and friends attended the funeral services held at the home. Interment in the Radford cemetery followed.

Linda Marie Grate, 61, Nevada, died Friday, Oct.19, 2007 at Mercy Health System, Fort Scott, Kan., following an illness of several weeks. She was born Jan. 24, 1946, in Gardenia, Calif., to James R. Henning and Theo Margaret Kerschmer Henning. Linda was born and raised in California. She came to this area about 10 years ago and spent the remainder of her life here. She made her living as an over the road truck driver. She loved horses and was an avid fisherman. She also was a fan of Nascar. Survivors include one son, Ralph Thomas, Whittier, Calif.; two daughters, Cynthia Deaton, Paris, Calif., and Judy Chestnut, the state of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Kenneth Smith, Nevada, Jack Bonura, Quantico, Va., Jeanna Thomas, Hutchinson, Kan., Chantel Deaton and Andrew Stamford, both of Nevada; two great-grandchildren, Mariah Burke and Joseph Burke, both of Hutchinson, Kan. Eugene "Gene" Gray, 55, of Schell City, Mo was welcomed into Heaven on Jan. 23, 2008, from the Ellett Memorial Hospital, in Appleton City, Mo., after a long struggle with cancer. Gene was born on Dec. 29, 1952, at Walnut Ridge, Ark., to Aileen Gray. Gene spent the first 12 years of his life in Arkansas where he was a typical mischievous kid. Many times he would tell of riding his bike, and selling pop bottles so he could go to the movies. He said he would take the five or six bottles that they had found, turn them in to the storekeeper, and offer take them the alley behind the store, only to take the same five or six bottles to the next store. At the age of 12, he was adopted by Holbert Clay Heath and came to live in the Schell City area. He graduated from Fort Scott Christian Heights, in 1971. He was voted the class clown in more than one of his High School years. He would often brag about his stunt such as getting into trouble for spitting out the bus window. Of course the bus window was on the other side of the bus and the wind was blowing. This took the spit right through the window to the seat behind him into the face of the two girls sitting in that seat. Or maybe it was because he made cat noises in music class and the teacher would stop class to try and find the cat in the room. After graduation, Gene attended Southwest Baptist College, in Bolivar, Mo. This is where he gained his love of learning. Learning was the one thing they could never take away from you he often said. He shared this love with many students. in 1978, He became the superintendent of the Rich Rock Christian Academy located just north of Schell City where the family resides today. Fun was included whether it was while cutting wood to keep the school warm, and of course roasting a hot dog or two or by the students sneaking off to the creek without permission, only to be caught by the leeches they had to remove when they got back to school. These students were disciplined only after Gene would quit laughing. When the school closed in 1987, he continued to teach at the Schell City Public School. Many students can tell of his wonderful gift to teach hard subjects like long division, and his love of History. He was transferred to the Northeast Vernon County High School, in 2002, where he was an aide in the Special Education Department. He loved to play Dominoes with the kids. They thought he was nice to play with them, but he was really teaching them math skills. Gene drove a school bus for 11 years. His heart went out to all the parents and students as they watched there little ones get on for the first day of school. Parents knew that their little ones would be loved and protected on Mr. Gray's bus. Gene was all for school spirit in the NEVC school. He cheered for the kids as he sat on the stage and would cheer the teams on with his loud booming voice. Gene was called to the ministry at an early age and started his first pastorate at the Rockville Baptist Church in Rockville, Mo., at 18. He pastured there for 30 years. In 2002, he became the pastor of the Schell City Baptist Church where he ministered until his coronation into heaven this last week. Gene loved to preach. He loved being a pastor. He was never attached to worldly possessions, but was touched by the saving of a soul. In 1985, Gene married Paula Kay Porter and to this union two children were born, Shannon Linae Gray, 17, and Clayton Eugene Madison Gray, 15. He loved his children. Gene loved nature. He loved taking young boys to the mountains and looking at the splendor of God's creation. Every time he would get to the mountains he would talk of the verse that says, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills for which cometh my strength." He would make the comment that if you looked that far up and all of it was strength, you were truly strong with the Lord. His love for fishing, and hunting would always bring a laugh as he would tell of falling down creek beds coon hunting, tipping over boats, or telling of the big one that got away. Gene is preceded in death by his mother, Aileen Gray and his adopted father Holbert C. Heath. He is survived by his wife Paula, daughter Shannon and son Clayton, all of the home. A half-brother Danny Ray Turnbow and wife Mary, of Illinois, three foster brothers Dale Purington, Paul Porter and wife Judy, of Muskogee, Okla., and Edward Case, of Kansas City, Mo. Gene had many family members but no friends. If you knew Gene, he always considered you family. His final words as he lay in the hospital were never of him but always of others. He would ask this question with all of the strength he could get, "Will you meet me in Heaven? Everyone said, "Yes" and he would continue with one single word: PROMISE! Gene touched and inspired more people than even he knew and will be greatly missed by all. Funeral services for Bro. Gene Gray were held Sunday, Jan. 27, at the NEVC High School gymnasium. Leonard Leroy Gregory, son of James Edger and Rita Mae (McCaslin) Gregory, was born May 19, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri. He passed away at his home in Windsor, Missouri May 8, 2009 at 74 years of age. Leonard lived in Kansas City until 1947 when his family moved to a farm west of Appleton City, Missouri. It was there that Leonard met his wife Patty Ann Wegener. They were married at Leonard's grandma's home in Linden, Missouri in 1953. They lived in Linden for several years before moving to California for four years where Mr. Gregory worked for Douglas Air Craft. The family moved back to the Appleton City area where they resided until 2003 when Patty and Leonard moved to Windsor, Missouri. Even though he had been handicapped for many years, hunting and fishing were two of Leonard's hobbies. He loved catching any type of fish and trot lining. He especially liked turkey and duck hunting. He also enjoyed hunting morel mushrooms. Leonard found great pleasure in going to "the boats" where he played the slot machines and poker. Preceding Leonard in death were his parents, one sister Opal Blankenship and one brother Jimmy Gregory. Survivors include his wife Patty; three children, Vicki Baker, Lenny Gregory and wife Mary and Tina Anderson and husband Fred; ten grandchildren, Jamie Gary, John Paul Gary, Katrina Gregory, Lonnie Gregory, Vince Freemyer Jennie Anderson, Stacy, Tim, Nathan and Jaclyn; six great-grandchildren, Mariah, Tristen, Luke, Abby, Caden and Alexa; one brother Kellis Gregory; and three sisters, Stella Thompson, Carolyn Green and Brenda Foster. Robert L. Griner, 71, of Mound City, KS, formerly of Adrian, MO, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at St. Joseph Health Center, Kansas City, Mo. He was born May 2, 1933, at Archie, Mo., the son of William and Nannie Gilkerson Griner. He graduated from Adrian High School. He married Mary Snider on July 12, 1978. He was a member of Sugar Valley Golf and Country Club at Mound City, KS, and past member of Elks at Fort Scott, KS, and Nevada, Mo. Nevada Arizona Ellen "Dolly" Grubb, 91, of Odessa, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at New Haven Nursing Home in Odessa. Visitation Monday, Aug. 4, at Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home in Odessa. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery in rural Bates City. Born Feb. 23, 1912, in Dunseith, N.D., she was the daughter of the late William and Arizona Stowell. The family moved to Idaho and then to Big Sandy, Mont., where they homesteaded. They moved to East Independence by covered wagon, arriving in 1924. She attended school at Spring Branch School in Independence before beginning work as a domestic for the Harold Hattey family south of Bates City. On Dec. 31, 1937, south of Bates City, she married Henry Valentine Grubb, who survives of the home. Thereafter, she was a lifelong resident of rural Odessa and Bates City, with the exception of 10 years when the family lived in Chatfield, Minn. After her marriage, she worked briefly at Odessa Shoe Factory and was also a housewife. She also cared for 10 of her grandchildren before and after school for many years. She had been a member of Concord Extension Club since 1992. Additional survivors include one brother, Ben Stowell of Sibley; four sons, Johnnie Grubb and wife Margie of Alma, and George Grubb and wife Portia, Bob Grubb and wife Marie and Henry L. and wife Beth, all of rural Odessa; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim, Charlie and Joe Stowell, and two sisters, Hannah Crabb and Lodica Friend.

Fannie Belle Gunn, daughter of Jacob P. and Mary Margaret Riley was born October 26, 1880 near Burdette, Bates County, Missouri and departed this life at the Bates County Memorial Hospital at Butler, Missouri December 22, 1960 at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 26 days. On July 4, 1897 she was united in marriage to Hiram M. Gunn. To this union three children were born, Wesley Earl, Walter Clarence and Ollie Belle. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, four brothers and one sister. In young womanhood she united with the Burdett Baptist church and was a member of that church at the time of her death. Fannie spent her entire life in Bates County. Surviving are her son, Clarence and wife, Elva of Adrian; daughter Ollie and husband Red of Butler; five grandchildren, Bob, Bud and Yvonne Gunn of Adrian; Richard Underwood of Butler and Barbara Phillips of Raytown; 13 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 24, 1960 at the Six Funeral Chapel. Burial was in the Burdett Cemetery.

HIRAM M. GUNN DEAD - Hiram Madison Gunn died at his home in this city on Saturday, December 26, 1931; aged 63 years and 2 months. Mr. Gunn had been in poor health for some time but had been able to be out most of the time until Thursday evening when he collapsed at the Adrian Elevator. Mr. Gunn was born near Freeman, Cass county, Mo., October 26, 1868, and spent his life in his native state. When a boy he located in the Burdett community where he spent most of his life, moving to Adrian a few years ago. At the age of seventeen years Mr. Gunn was converted and united with the Burdett Baptist Church, of which he remained a member until his passing. On July 4, 1896 he was united in marriage with Miss Fannie Bell Riley. To this union three children were born: Wesley Earl, who died at the age of three and one half years; Walter Clarence, who is assistant postmaster at Adrian, and Ollie Bell Underwood, both of Adrian. Besides the widow and two children his is survived by one grandson, Richard Earl Underwood, his son-in-law German Underwood, and daughter-in-law Elva Gunn; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Cunningham, of Belmont, Wash.; and Mrs. Anna Badorff, of San Francisco, California, and a brother, Clarence Gunn of Modesta, California. Mr. Gunn had been for years a member of the Modern Woodmen of America Lodge. Mr. Gunn was a good citizen, always a pleasant and agreeable gentleman who was ready at all times to render a helpful service to his fellowmen. All who knew him were his friends and where he spent the greater portion of his life he is held in the highest esteem by those who knew him. We shall miss the smiling face of Mr. Gunn in the business circles of Adrian, but all will cherish in memory the beautiful spirit of cheerfulness he scattered daily among his neighbors and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Gunn were held Sunday afternoon from the Adrian Baptist Church. Interment was made in the Burdett cemetery by Creath & Six funeral directors.

Nina Dell Gunset, 96, of Hume, Missouri, died Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Prescott Countryview Nursing Home, Prescott, Kansas. She was born July 31, 1912 in Butler, Missouri, the daughter of Robert and Josephine Morgan Jones. She married Brice Gunset on August 2, 1936 at Butler, Missouri. He preceded her in death in March of 1991. Nina was a homemaker. She lived in the same house in Hume, Missouri from 1942 until going into the nursing home in 2005. She helped Brice collect township taxes out of their home for many years. She had many friends and she was always pleasant in good and bad times. She was preceded in death also by her parents; one son, George Gunset (twin brother of Gerald); one brother, and two sisters. Survivors include two sons, Gerald Gunset & wife, Eloise of Snyder, Texas and James Gunset of Kansas City, Missouri; six grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

She was born December 20, 1921 to Frederick and Amanda Beaman Alexander in Warsaw, Missouri. Ruth is survived by one son, Richard Gunther and wife Marion of Southport, North Carolina; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers; and one sister, Elizabeth Gabriel.

PLANE CRASH-DIES FROM BURNS - Chad Guthrie, popular Adrian youth died Friday afternoon, July 5, the result of burns sustained when a plane in which he was a passenger crashed into a parked automobile on 18 highway, one mile east of Adrian. Instantly the plane and car burst into flames following the crash. The body of Chad was burned beyond recognition before it was possible to recover the body. George Melvin of Bellvue, Nebraska, pilot of the plane, sustained second degree burns. He jumped from the plane just as it struck the car. He was taken to the Butler hospital and later removed to the veterans hospital at Widsworth, Kansas. John Underwood, coroner, directed the remains of Chad taken to the Creath & Six funeral home. Melvin was flying a plane, the property of a party in Fort Scott, Kansas. He had landed east of Adrian about 2:00 o'clock and had solicited passengers to haul for a fee of $2.00 for a 15 minute ride, according to evidence brought out at the coroners inquest, Melvin Smith, a chum of Chad Guthrie had just completed a ride in the plane. Chad was the next passenger and entered and was strapped into the plane by the pilot ready for the flight. The take off was in a newly threshed oats field on the Brundige farm. The pilot first attempted to take off to the north and failing turned and headed south. He apparently was in trouble and could not get the plane off the ground. He first hit two fence posts on the south of the field crossed the highway and crashed into the Ford car of William Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins had stopped his car, gotten out and was watching the takeoff. The speed of the plane was estimated at about 60 miles an hour at the time of the crash. Evidence brought out by Carl Shubert, who was at the scene for sometime was that the pilot did not cut the speed of the motor and had it wide open at the time of the crash. In a statement made by Melvin at the Butler hospital, he stated that his motor had failed and he had cut it off. Lester Clifton, Bill Jenkins, John Greenwell, Norman Brummett, Melvin Smith and Ira Smith all testified at the inquest substituting the fact that the plane never left the ground and that the takeoff was attempted to the north before to the south. It was brought out at the inquest that there was scarcely a noticeable wind at the time. Saturday morning a coroners jury composed of Amos Mudd, Bert Wackeman, Edwin Blocher, Edward Fritts and W. I. Nudson returned a verdict that death was due to an unavoidable accident in an airplane crash. John Underwood coroner of Bates county, conducted the inquest. Chad Guthrie was one of Adrian's best youths. He had been a resident of this community only about three years but as a student in the Adrian high school, gained a wide acquaintance. Popular in athletics and a letterman in football, Chad just got around and knew people. He was president of the Senior class last spring from which he graduated from the Adrian high school as valedictorian of the class. For the past year Chad had worked at the Ira Smith garage on 71 highway. He lived in the Smith home and he and Melvin Smith were constant companions. They had planned to enter William Jewell college together this fall. Mr. and Mrs. Smith felt toward Chad as one of their own and gave every consideration to him. Chad Virgil Guthrie, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Guthrie of Adrian community, was born near Abbott, Arkansas, August 8, 1928. He moved with his parents to Bates county about three years ago and the family located on a farm in Grand River township. Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Neva Jane and Anna Mae of the home. Funeral services for Chad were held from the Adrian Methodist church, Saturday afternoon, July 6, 1946. Burial was in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six funeral service.

Curtis Udell (Gill) Guthrie, 91, Bowling Green, Ohio, formerly of Adrian, Mo died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997 at her home in Bowling Green. Graveside services were held Dec. 4 at the Altona Cemetery, Altona, Mo. Interment was in the Altona Cemetery. Mrs. Guthrie was born Dec. 10, 1905 in Lucas County, Ark., to Aberham C. and Margaret E. (Melton) Gill. She spent most of her early years in Arkansas. She married Ollie Virgil Guthrie on April 3, 1926. To this union four children were born. Her husband preceded her in death Nov. 22, 1955. A daughter, Alice Marie, died in infancy; a son, Chad Virgil, was killed in an airplane crash on July 5, 1946 in Adrian, Mo. She joined the Baptist Church in Arkansas in 1921 and transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church of Adrian in 1959 where she was a loyal and faithful member. She moved with her family from Arkansas to Adrian in 1943 where he lived until 1988 when she went to live near her daughter ion Bowling Green. She enjoyed piecing quilts for family and friends and spent many years caring for elderly people in the Adrian area. She leaves two daughters, Neva Jane Sposato, Bowling Green and Anna Mae Randall, Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and other relatives. (Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian, MO)

Ollie Virgil Guthrie was born July 23, 1899 in Keota, Oklahoma, to Albert and Mattie Guthrie, and departed this life November 22, 1955 at the Butler Memorial Hospital. On April 3, 1926, he was united in marriage to Curtis U. Gill and to this union four children were born; Alice Marie and Chad Virgil who preceded him in death; Anna Mae Guthrie, San Fernando, California; and Mrs. Neva Sposato of Lorain, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, the two daughters, one brother, W. C. Guthrie of Santa Anna, California, Mrs. Malissa Wade, Pasadena, Texas, Mrs. Rosa Lile, Fort Smith, Arkansas, Mrs. Mable Farmer, Booneville, Arkansas, and Mrs. Dora Eelph, Mansfield, Arkansas: two grand children and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the Six Chapel in Adrian, Missouri on Thursday, November 24, 1955. Burial was in the Altona Cemetery.
