TABLER, Andrew Nelson

Andrew Nelson Tabler was born in Christian county, Ill., July 11th, 1883, and died June 14th, 1920; aged 67 years and 1 month. Mr. Tabler was first married to Miss Anna Miller, she died leaving one daughter, now Mrs. Lutie May Cooley of Wichita, Kansas. In 1884 he was united in marriage with Miss Ellen Lumley. To this union six children were born, two sons and four daughters, who with the wife, survive. Mr. Tabler was converted in early life and united with the Methodist Church, and remained a member of same until his death. In 1903 the Tabler family moved to Bates county, Mo., locating on a farm in Grand River township, where they resided for eleven years, they then moved to Adrian and a year ago to Kansas City. Mr. Tabler was a good citizen and was held in high esteem by all who knew him as an honorable Christian gentleman, and his demise will be regretted by a wide circle of friends. An account of the funeral and burial was given in the Journal last week.

Mrs. Ellen Tabler, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. E. Buckles, 340 N. 12th street, Kansas City, Kansas, on Sunday, April 8, 1934; aged 76 years, 7 months and 20 days. Ellen Lumley was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, June 18, 1857. When a small child she moved with her parents to Illinois. She grew to womanhood and was united in marriage with Andrew Tabler, who preceded her in death June 20, 1920. To this union were born six children all of whom were with her at the time of her death. The children are: Mrs. R. E. Bucklee, Kansas City, Kansas, H. C. Hepler, Greensburg, Kans.; Miss Grace Tabler, Los Angeles, Calif.; George Tabler and J. B. Tabler, of Kansas City, Mo. She is also survived by one brother, James Lumley, of Hennessey, Okla. Also 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Tabler came to Bates county about 30 years ago and located on a farm near Altona, later they moved to Adrian where they resided until 1918 when they moved to Kansas City. Mrs. Tabler had for many years been a member of the Methodist Church at Adrian, and was a faithful worker in the Ladies Aid as long as her health would permit. Funeral services for Mrs. Tabler were held at Porter's chapel in Kansas City, Tuesday afternoon. The remains were brought to Adrian and burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Mrs. Ida B. Tabler was born August 16, 1871, in Bates county, Missouri, died May 16, 1920; aged 48 years and 9 months. Mrs. Tabler was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mr. J. C. Harrison, pioneer residents of Bates county, her father having passed beyond 5 years ago. The mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison of Kansas City, three sisters, Mrs. J. W. Steven, Tilbury, Ontario, Canada, Mrs. Alva P. Jones, Topeka, Kansas, Mrs. Harold Kratz, Kansas City, Mo., besides her immediate family are left to mourn her loss. Mrs. Tabler was united in marriage in her early life to Millard F. Tabler; with whom she lived happily until his death in March 1919. The twin sons, Leland A. and Lorand O. Tabler, the former having just preceded in death by just a few months; two daughter, Mrs. R. H. Shaw and Mrs. D. J. Zinn, all of Kansas City. Mrs. Tabler was a faithful Christian, having united with the M.E. Church, South at Altona in her seventeenth year. Funeral services were held from the Adrian M.E. church Tuesday afternoon, May 18th. Burial in Altona cemetery.

Millard Fremont Tabler died at his home in Kansas City, Mo., March 28th, 1919; aged 62 years, 4 months and 14 days. Millard Tabler was born in Illinois, November 14, 1856. He moved to Missouri in 1888 and in 1889 was converted and united with the Methodist Church South at Altona, Mo., where his membership has since remained. In 1890 he was united in marriage with Ida B. Harrison. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Lorand and Leland, and two daughters, Leona Pearl and Thelma Jennings, and one brother, Andrew Tabler, of Kansas City, Mo. From the time Mr. Tabler came to Missouri he resided in Bates county until about two years ago when the family moved to Kansas City. Mr. Tabler was a good citizen and an obliging neighbor. He enjoyed the esteem of his neighbors and of all who knew him. The body was brought to Adrian Saturday morning and funeral services were held from the Adrian Methodist church Saturday afternoon. The body was laid to rest in the Altona cemetery. The widow and children have the sympathy of friends in this bereavement.

Drusilla Tarrants was born October 6, 1837. Died Feb. 6, 1916, at her home in Appleton City, at the age of 78 years and four months. She was married to John Stephenson January 29, 1857. To this union nine children were born, seven daughters and two sons. Two daughters died in childhood. She was converted in girlhood and joined the M.E. Church, South, in which she remained a member until the Lord called her home. The funeral service was held at Round Prairie Church Monday February 7. Interment was made in the Round Prairie Cemetery.

Francis Marion Taylor was born in Lumpkin County, Georgia, December 7, 1846 and passed away at the home of his son Walter, Sunday, January 25, 1931. Mr. Taylor was married in 1866 to Martha Cantrell and to them were born J. S. Taylor of Butler, Ernest and James of K. C., Leonard of Georgia, and Walter and G. W. of Bates County. There are nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor came from Georgia to Missouri in 1866 and located in Platt County. In 1873 they located in Altona and the rest of their lives were spent in Bates County. Mrs. Taylor preceded him in death in 1918. Squire Taylor as he was familiarly known was a Mason for about 60 years and a member of the Christian Church a score of years. He was active in affairs of government in an office held many years. Funeral and burial were at Altona, Tuesday, January 27.

JAMES TAYLOR DEAD - Word was received in Butler Tuesday of the death of James Taylor of Kansas City, brother of County Treasurer J. S. Taylor and Walter Taylor here. Death occurred at 9 o'clock at the Bethany hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, where he was taken Monday for an operation, his death occurring before the operation could be performed. County Treasurer J. S. Taylor and Walter Taylor were advised of their brother's illness Monday evening and Tuesday morning received a message that his condition had suddenly become critical. They left at once for Kansas City, reaching the hospital a short time before Mr. Taylor's death. The remains will be interred at Altona.

Mrs. Martha Taylor died at her home near Altona on Thursday, May 23, 1918 after an illness of many months of kidney disease. Funeral services were conducted at the home Friday and the burial was at the Altona Cemetery. Mrs. Taylor was a native of Georgia and was 67 years of age. She was married to Mr. Taylor 51 years ago and soon afterwards they came to Mo. and settled in Bates County. She is the mother of six sons who with her husband survive her.

Richard Louis Thelander, 72, Nevada, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 3, 1933, in Elgin, Ill., to Earl Joseph Thelander and Helen Nellie Heine Thelander. He was married Jan. 8, 1994, in Grandview, Mo., to Dorothy Jean Coin and she survives of the home. Mr. Thelander was born and reared in Elgin. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years including serving in Vietnam. He retired from the service in 1972. Following his tour in the service, he worked at a variety of occupations including banking and accounting. He was an active member of the Vietnam Veterans Association. He was also a member and a trustee at Trinity Lutheran Church for many years. In addition to his wife Dorothy, survivors include one son, Jeffrey Thelander, Independence, Mo.; one daughter, Sheree McKarnin, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; one stepson, Jim Coin, Columbia, Mo.; three stepdaughters, Judy Kem, Grandview, Mo., Charlene Smith, Raytown, Mo., Mary Keown, Independence; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two cousins, Nancy Taylor and Kenneth Thelander, both from the state of Ilinois. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Gary Thelander. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Newcomer Longview Chapel in Kansas City, Mo. Interment will follow in Longview Memorial Garden.

Sterling Eugene (Gene) Thomas, 67, Milo, Mo., passed away at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, following a short illness. He was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Nevada, Mo., to Sterling Lemon Thomas and Cleora Mae Belcher Thomas. He married Sandra M. Havens on April 26, 1959, in Nevada, and she survives of the home. Gene was a lifelong resident of Vernon County. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1958. Gene worked as a construction inspector for the Missouri State Highway Department for 39 years until his retirement in 2000. He also farmed and raised cattle. Gene was a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church, the Nevada Elks Lodge No. 564, the Missouri Cattleman's Association, and the Wednesday morning coffee bowling league. He enjoyed his grandchildren, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors in addition to his wife Sandy, include one daughter, Bonnie McConnaughy and her husband Daniel, Olathe, Kan.; one son, Odie Thomas and his wife Tami, Nevada; five grandchildren, Eric Hochstatter, Morgan Hochstatter, Heather Thomas, Taylor Thomas, and Colton Thomas; two step-grandchildren, Melissa McConnaughy, and Amanda McConnaughy; his mother, Polly Thomas, Nevada; one sister, Judy Kimzey, Nevada; two nephews and nieces and one great-nephew. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada.

William is survived by four daughters, Betty Brent and husband Jim of Warsaw, Missouri, Shirley McNeall and husband Dale of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Barbara Keyton of Garden City, Missouri and Pennie Doss and husband David of Urbandale, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Don Morris Thompson, 94, formerly of Bronaugh, Mo., passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at Barone Alzheimer Care Center, Nevada, Mo., following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 31, 1913, in Bronaugh, Mo., to Chauncey Lee Thompson and Nellie Pearl Feller Thompson. He married Eileen Kerr on May 9, 1941, and she preceded him in death on June 27, 1993. Don was born and raised in this area and spent virtually his entire life here. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre of War, aboard the U.S.S. Topeka Following his time in the service, he returned to Bronaugh and operated Thompson DX Service Station from 1946 to 1969. Following retirement from the service station, he worked for many years at the Nevada Elks and Eagles lodges. Don was a member of the Bronaugh Christian Church, the local VFW, Nevada Elks, and the Bronaugh Lions Club. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Survivors include one sister-in-law, Virgie Thompson, Bronaugh, Mo., numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Darrell Thompson and five sisters, Juanita Day, Lee Earl Shearburn, Erma Shearburn, Alta Bunton, and Nelma Ripley. Graveside services will be held Monday, Sept. 24, at Worsley Cemetery, Bronaugh, Mo. (Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO)

GRANDMA THOMPSON DEAD - Mrs. Elizabeth J. Thompson died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas Chapman, in this city, Tuesday evening, May 18th, 1913; aged 79 years and 4 days. Elizabeth J. Smith was born in Franklin, Vanango Co., Penn., May 9, 1834. In 1854 she was united in marriage with William Williamson, to this union four children were born, three are living, viz: Mrs. Susan Manford and Mrs. Al. Casey, of Holden, Mo., T. S. Williamson, of Long Lane, Mo. In 1868 she was united in marriage with J. M. Thompson, to this union six children were born, five of whom are living, viz: J.H. Thompson, Mrs. Chas. Chapman, Mrs. F. Thompson, Frank Thompson. Mrs. Thompson moved from her eastern home to Missouri in 1858, and for fifty-five years had resided here, having experienced the hardships of pioneer life. During her active years she was a kind and obliging neighbor and loyal friend. Her latter years were spent in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Chapman, where she received tender attention. She passed peacefully into the great beyond-Tuesday evening, having been in her usual health until within a few hours of her demise. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, and the body tenderly laid to rest in the Altona cemetery.

Frank C. Thompson, 75, died at 2:30 o'clock Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Marshall Myers, in Rich Hill. Mr. Thompson was born in Holden, Mo., and when a small boy, went with his parents to Altona, Mo., where he resided until about seven years ago, when he moved to Rich Hill with his daughter. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Myers and another daughter, Mrs. Ray Wagman, El Dorado Springs, Mo.; four sons; Frank Thompson of Sprague community, Willie Thompson and G. L. Thompson of Rich Hill and John Thompson of California; one sister, Mrs. Sadie Thompson of California; Mrs. O. W. Farrow of Rich Hill is a niece. His wife preceded him in death several years ago. Funeral services were held in Altona, Mo., Sunday.

He leaves to mourn his departure, father, mother, 4 brothers, 2 sisters. He was the son of Frank Thompson, being at the time of his death 21 years, 5 months and 13 days.

Gertrude, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson, died at the home of her parents in Grand River township, Monday, September 22, 1913; aged 12 years, 1 month and 4 days. Gertrude was born at the farm where she died August 18th 1901, where she had spent all the years of her life. She spent the past summer in this city with her aunt, Mrs. Chas. Chapman, and formed many acquaintances who learned to love the little Miss because of her kindly disposition and ladylike bearing. Gertrude was sick but a short time and her demise comes as a great shock to her parents and friends. The Journal joins in the community sympathy for the sorrowing parents. The loss of these dear ones comes as a great blow to the parents and leaves a wound that never heals. Funeral services were held at Altona Tuesday afternoon. Burial was made in the cemetery at that place.

Mr. Isaac Thompson died at his home on the South Side, at 3:30 this morning, after a lingering illness with tuberculosis. He was aged 54 years the 22d day of last June. Mr. Thompson leaves a wife and two children, besides other relatives, and friends to mourn his loss. The funeral will be held from the home tomorrow afternoon, conducted by Rev. J.H. Cleaves of the M.E. Church, South, of which church Mr. Thompson was a member. E. Wheelbarger has charge of the funeral.

MRS. FRANK THOMPSON DEAD - Lula D., daughter of John and Sarah Ramey was born May 6th, 1885 near Adrian, Mo. and passed away at her home in Altona, Mo., Thursday, August 31, 1939 about 1:30 o'clock, age 54 years, 3 months and 25 days. She was united in marriage to Frank C. Thompson in October 1900 at Altona, Missouri where they lived until her death. To this union 12 children were born, 6 of which preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her the husband Frank C., six children, Clara, Frank, Willis and Gerald of the home, Mrs. Opal Myers, Butler, Missouri and Howard Thompson of California. Also one brother John E. Ramey of Sheldon, Missouri, four sisters, Mrs. Nettie Chapman, Mrs. Leora Perman, Mrs. Stella Wise and Miss Phrone Ramey all of who have preceded her in death. Mrs. Thompson had lived in this community all her life and will be missed by her family and friends. Funeral of Mrs. Thompson was held at the Altona Baptist church Saturday afternoon. Burial was made in Altona Cemetery by Creath and Six Funeral service.

DIED ON WAY TO HOSPITAL - Oscar Thompson, 16 years old, died Saturday night while on the way to the Community hospital at Butler. Last Thursday, Oscar was thrown from a bicycle and fell sprawling on his stomach. At the time he did not seem to be seriously ill and kept going about. Friday he walked to a saw mill not far from his home. When he returned in the evening he told his mother that he was all in and went to bed. Nothing further was done until Saturday evening when a physician was called. At that time his condition was very grave and it was decided to take him to the hospital. Arrangements could not be completed for taking him until night. On the way he died near the W. W. McLay farm, in Grand River township. The body was brought to Adrian and prepared for burial. Oscar was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson, but was reared from infancy by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thompson and was living with them when he was stricken with his fatal illness. It is thought that he sustained fatal internal injuries when thrown from his bicycle on Thursday. Funeral services for Oscar were held Sunday at Altona. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery. The relatives have the sympathy of friends in the demise of this worthy young man.

AUS THOMPSON DEAD - Oscar Thompson, who was injured by an explosion in a well at the Aus Mouse place, Nov. 30th, died December 1st. His injuries were described in last week's Journal. From the moment he was taken out of the well after the terrible explosion his condition was known to be extremely critical and his recovery was not expected. -- Oscar Thompson was born at Holden, Mo., July 8, 1875, and came with his parents to Bates county bout the year 1884. He was married to Mrs. C. E. Denney at Nevada, Mo., June 10th, 1909. Died at his home in Altona, December 1st, 1910; aged, 35 years, 4 months and 23 days. Funeral services over the remains were held Friday. The tragic death of Mr. Thompson has cast a gloom over the entire community and the family has the sympathy of all in this great calamity that has come upon the home.

Ruth Virginia "Gini" Thompson, 87, Nevada, Mo., formerly of Caldwell and Lawrence, Kan., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at Christian Health Care in Nevada. She was born June 4, 1919, in Fairfield, Iowa, the only child of Verl Abner and Margaret Elsie Houghton Teeter. She married Frederick Luther Thompson on March 13, 1942, in Dallas, Texas. He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2003. Virginia graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in commercial art. Her life's work was as a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was active throughout her life in the Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, P.E.O., and Kappa Kappa Gamma Social Sorority. Gini and Fred especially enjoyed their retirement years playing bridge, traveling, and visiting family. She was a superb cook, gracious hostess, and Oklahoma University football fan. Her passion was painting places and scenes where she lived and visited. She is survived by four children, Margaret "Peggy" Thompson, Blue Springs, Mo.; Patricia "Patti" Reemer, St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands; F.L. "Rick" Thompon, Nevada; and William "Bill" Thompson, Rowlette, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Everett was born July 12, 1930 in Kansas City, MO, the son of Wesley and Irene (Roberts) Timbers. He married Neva F. Reedy on May 27, 1955. Everett owned Archie Painting Company for 25 years and was a member of the Painters Union for 50 years. He attended the Archie United Methodist Church. Everett was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean War. Everett was preceded in death by his father and two sisters, Lucille Smith and Mary Timbers. He is survived by his wife, Neva Timbers; three sons, Kerry L. Timbers of Newton, MA, Vincent L. Timbers and his wife, Patricia of State College, PA and Kevin L. Lucas Wesley Turner was born Dec. 11, 1978, in Butler, Mo., the son of Gordon Wesley and Wanda Lee (Diehl) Turner. He passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008, as a result of an automobile accident. He graduated in 1997, from Rich Hill High School and graudated from Pittsburg State University Technical School in 1999. He was employed for the past 5 1/2 years at 3M in Nevada. Lucas enjoyed car races, music, baseball, and spending time with his family and friends; especially his sons Landon and Morgan. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Dorothy Diehl. He is survived by his parents; Andrea Norbury, girlfriend and mother of his sons; sister Cassandra Hardin and husband Sam; niece Kristen Hardin; nephew Lane Hardin; grandfather, Orville Diehl; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who will miss him very much. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3, at Heuser Funeral Home. Interment was at Green Lawn Cemetery, in Rich Hill.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mollie Turner, who died at her home in Butler, on Friday June 2 at the age of 72 years, were held on Monday June 5th. Mary Katherine Halterman was born in St. Clair county, Mo on Aug 26 1877. She joined the church at an early age and her life was one of service and devotion to family and friends alike. Mrs. Turner was early left an orphan and made her home with an Aunt until she was married to Charles E. Turner on Oct. 9, 1895. Two children were born to this union, Ethel Williams of Butler and John Turner of Appleton City. She is survived by her husband, the two children, ten grandchildren, Dorothy Leonard, Eva June Allen, Louis Hartley, Jesse Lee Brownsberger, Marjorie Cox, Nevaleen , Loretta, Deloris, Wesley and Charles J. Turner; 17 great grandchildren, one half sister, Mrs. C. E. Marshall, one step brother, Bob Smith, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Rhoda A. Harvey, daughter of Rev. John Harvey and Mary L. Harvey, was born in Adams county, Illinois, Sept. 28, 1831; died at Waverly, Wash., July 15, 1922, at the advanced age of 91 years and 9 months. Mrs. Tyree went to Bates county, Missouri, in 1843, where she was married to Levi Tyree at the age of twenty years. To this union nine children were born as follows: Margaret Schillinger, of Spruce, Miss.; Jennie McConnell, San Bernado, Calif.; Lucy Cummings (deceased); C.C. Tyree, Couer d' Alene, Ida.; Anna Webb, Los Angeles, Calif.; Wm. Tyree, West Fairfield, Wash., and Oliver C. Tyree, Couer d'Alene, Idaho. Mrs. Tyree and her husband were united with the Baptist church in 1868 and lived a faithful Christian life. Mrs. Tyree was an old and honored pioneer of this district, coming to Waverly in the spring of 1886 and three years later built a home on what is now the S.P. Wright place, where she resided until fourteen years ago, since which time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Lambert at Waverly. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Waverly, interment being in the Fairfield cemetery by the side of the husband of deceased who preceded her to the grave in May 1905.
